Hey all, I'm back on the list now after getting the family moved from Salem, OR to Tucson, AZ. And just in time too, I heard that Portland, OR got 8 inches of rain in a day recently! My '78 Wag did great pulling our Honda Accord, averaged 9.4 mph, not too bad. After the first of the year we will be moved into our just purchased house and I will continue to replace the vacuum hoses and re-build the carb (Motorcraft 4350). I've got a little story to convey to you all from my road trip: I was travelling down CA hwy 95 from Needles to Blythe around 8 pm. I came around a corner and lo and behold there were 4 semi headlights directly in front of me! It took me half a second to realize that I wasn't imagining things and that one semi was passing the other semi and they were neck and neck to boot. All I had time for was to swerve onto the gravel shoulder and back on to the road. I could not believe that I didn't bite it once I hit the gravel, but was able to farily easily get back on to the road (I know I was doing 50 at the time, and I'm sure the semis were doing at least the same). I also couldn't believe that the Honda in tow didn't take me out into the desert once it whipped around the back on the tow dolley. All I can say is thank God for my Wag's 5000 lbs. of stability and my BFG AT's for keeping me on track. After that little incident I'm feeling like FSJ's are invincible! Well, so much for blabbering on, its good to be back in the sunshine and back on the list. c-ya, Whit. Steve Whitney, '78 Wag (that won't put up with being run off the road!) They screwed around with too many of us that were mechanics... One friend had all the emissions stuff on his rig, just not where their little computer screen said it should be... turns out he was well known by the "officials" throughout the area, as he'd been a motorcycle dealer in Seattle since the internal combustion engine had been developed.. :) and he couldn't make the minimum wage flunky taking the test understand that it was there, so he kinda went ballistic and contacted some friends... I think the next year they quit doing under the hood inspections... Just the tailpipe thing on the rollers.. They backed off of the reformuated gas too because of the improvement in air quality. What really helped was the burn bans in the winter... I used to drive around with a respirator on so I could breath, I'm allergic to alder... alders are a naitve weed here in western washington... they will grow 15 feet easily in a year or two... seriously... y'all in the midwest would love these things... insta-tree... they are slightly better than cottonwoods... but that's another story... Vashon Island is a high rent district, isn't it? All the bigwigs from Seattle ferry over there to their large spreads... one guy is hassling the locals because he flies in and out in his own helicopter, and we're not talking a little bubble canopy type... 8 passenger or larger type... I know nothing of any import fee. You do have to take it to the state police to be inspected, that's the vin/title thing. $55 bucks, just did one less than 2 yrs ago... that's how I found out about the Diesel / what it looks like is what it's licensed as deal... Emmissions runs $12. Once every two years, odd years, odd year vehicles... buyer has to have it inspected if it hasn't been in 6 months.. The thing the that gets me is the way they test 4wd's and Diesels... the Diesel thing worries me, you FLOOR your DIESEL until the screen says to drop back to an idle, you do it three times... Fortunately, they've always let me do it... scares the innards outta me... I've yet to hold it the whole time or actually floor it... the MORONS... first thing you learn in school, NEVER rev a Diesel motor without a load... the valves and the pistons could rendevouz... and I know the scum wouldn't even think about paying for it if it broke... 4wd's get to rev their engines to about 2200rpm and hold it until the tv screen says to return to an idle... I'd like to see them run if I did a neutral drop with Old Blue at that rpm... those chocks would sail neatly out the back and I'd probably take out the little cubicle walls on either side as I exited out the other door smoking sideways..... :) ahhhh, daydreams... if there is ever a revolution, I won't be hard to find... just look for me around the rubble of your nearest emissions testing station... :) (yeah right, like I'd screw around there... I'll be in the mountains before the folks in the city get to the freeway... :) later, john[Back to Top]

Make sure and keep master cylinder full. This is *not* the quickest way, but, when finished you will have ZERO air. No need to pump up the brakes, no motorized vacuum pumps etc, all of these methods will induce air into to system. Also make sure oyu do not shake up the bottle of brake fluid, those bubbles become trapped air later on. Let it run at each caliper untill it runs clear, I usually do this while doing other service. I usually let the bleeder go for an hour or so. C'ya Joe- ps; I've done this many times on my Vette and it has 8 bleeder valves! 2 per caliper, times 4 calipers.[Back to Top]

Date: Fri, 13 Dec 96 21:37:10 EST From: rdmbfe-at-micro.lucent.com (M_B_FEICK) Subject: FIRE!!FIRE!! Well-I can see it's back to the 'yard for an engine harness... I was warming up Mr. Beef today to go to my buddy's garage when he just stopped idling. Oh well I thought, I probably just forgot to hook up the aligator clip that runs the fuel pump (gotta get that relay in...) No, I hear it clicking...WHAT TH'... Now I'm gettin' pissed! Just rebuilt the carb, and I'm thinkin' it's a stuck float or something. No, accel pump shooting gas... Just about the time I started to run down Mr Battery, it occured to me-this thing ain't gettin no spark! (Verified with Harley plug out of tool box) Where to start- OK let's see if we got 12v at the coil... NO! (what are the chances of hitting it first try?) Hmm now why not, I know I'll just move the harness here and...SPARK! POOF! OH MERDE! Muh Jeep done caught fire! Gotsta unhook the Battery like quick! After visions of dripping plastic and black smoke left my head, I investigated the site of much sparking and found that the previous (as opposed to the current) chowder head struck again and had the harness such that the red 12v coil wire had rubbed thru on the intake. NO WONDER 1)it would shut off over bumps (sometimes) 2)the lights would dim at weird intervals 3)it would just quit, then start as if nothing happened! Actually this near fire couldn't have made me happier-many mystery problems have been solved!!!! As far as the 4bbl rebuild goes, that went very smoothly and Mr. Beef fired right up-haven't had a chance to fine adj. yet. Put a manual choke on as well (HOORAY!) When I do the harness I'll also go with a new Standard Ign. coil and get rid of that stupid hoopdy-rig Ford I-look-like-I'm-on-but-I'm-not-making-contact coil connector as well as grab a spare brain outta the 'yard. Also, the more I stare at the '79 manual and 'yard motors the more I'm understanding the crapuum system, so I think I'll rehook the EGR/manifold/CTO/distrib path. Got rid of all my 1" hose-with-screw vacuum plugs and actually got real rubber caps!(too fancy now) The QT/th400 story isn't as happy-I put my shift kit and new seal in the 'yard trans, and proceeded to do the tourque test on the diff. in the QT-it figures that out of the 3 QTs I have I would pick the only one that had a spent diff to rebuild! (Wish I woulda known the test earlier or had a manual) AAAnyway just like the fab four say it is indeed getting better all the time. After I re-diff the QT, it's harness/steering col./fine tune/beat like red haired step child. Any questions? Brad Feick uncharred '78 J20, Mr Beef. (I like him rare)[Back to Top]
Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 20:29:28 -0800 From: john <john-at-> Subject: got pictures, now I'll need a scanner... WAY COOL... just got a letter in the mail tonight. Flygpost par avion... with a whole bunch of stamps on it... from Tommy... in Sweden... Some nice shots of his 77 Cherokee before, and during, and approximately where it is now... I liked the shots of the snow. I've never really looked at a Cherokee with nothing inside it before... it's interesting how they made up for the weight savings of not having those TWO very useful back doors by adding steel across that opening... :) Mark, you'd probably like this thing... Tommy said he drove it around this August with no mufflers. Nice paint job Tommy. If my legs looked like that I wouldn't wear shorts... :) Your Daily Driver is one sharp J20, when you say it's not riding like Old Blue, is that before or after I fixed the vibrations??? I NEVER saw a US Army truck that looked as nice as yours. I like the picture of the Chero with the entire front end off... Now I know where to weld on some brackets for a custom brush guard... It's a lot easier to see with everything off... Sure is pretty looking country, very much like the Pacific Northwest, without the snow of course... We may be slightly greener here... But why aren't there any Mountains or Hills??? I mean I look across the field and it's all kind of level... Your friend's FSJ and Volvo lot looks very, very, very familiar... including the volvo... Is his name Tom by any chance??? :) Actually, your friend has his sitting in a row, on concrete... Tom's, well, they're sort of in a row... funny though, these look like they have color... Tom's seem to be white or green... Is that a 67 hood on your 68 Mustang? Is that a stock color? It looks like it's somewhere between the red and the orange that they offered... I found my Europa Atlas and located your town... Is the Ma(e)laran salt water? (is it e if you don't have umlauts?) This looks like a very liveable place. How severe is the climate? I noticed the White Birch trees, they tend to like our higher elevations, or the northern parts of Wisconsin... Since you're near the 60th parallel I'd say you probably have long days in the summer and very short days in the winter. Shoot, Frankfurt is further North than we are here in Seattle, and the days were longer / shorter than here, I can imagine how much more there. Looks like the water plays a big factor in keeping you from becoming tundra... Looks like you're in farm country... What kind of work do you do? Any good computer jobs in your area? :) Hey, don't knock the european Ford Granada's, they are much nicer than American Granada's... Isn't that the top of the line in Europe in the Ford line? later, john ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- "When they came for the 2nd Amendment, I said nothing, for I owned no gun Then the sixth was next to go, and I remained silent, as I was not on trial They took away the fourth, and I said nothing, as I had nothing to hide And then they came for the First, and I could say nothing." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- john-at- http://www./~john 81 (SJ) & 88 (XJ) Jeep Wagoneer Limited Snohomish, WA - where jeeps don't rust, they mold. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Real freedom comes from knowing Him who made us free... -----------------------------------------------------------------------------[Back to Top]

And out of wonder, try sticking the 258 crank in the 242 block, then tell all of us how it looks? Mind you, I'd love to be the one to pass the word on, but my local shop does mostly Chevy & Ford V-8's. They are rebuilding a Jeep truck 401 at the moment and they need three stock valve retainers. That's very interesting Michael, but my science book lists the following information: Melting Point of Elements: Aluminum 660 deg. C - apx 1,200 deg F Iron 1,525 deg. C - apx 2,732 deg F. You said that it would LOWER the temperature by 2,000 degrees!!! A Diesel at full compression has heated the air to about 1,656 deg F... That's at 22:1 compression ratio... and Diesel has more energy than gas... I couldn't find anything in print to say what a gas engine's exhaust temp is, but the Diesel is around 1,600 degrees and is considered hot (compared to ???) So what kind of combustion temperatures are we talking about where you could lower it more than the melting point of some pistons... :) Since I couldn't find anything in print, and don't remember from school, I can only say I'm very curious about this. I can't find my welding book either, but it seems to me that the melting point of steel is around 1,700 deg C... I need to finish cleaning my office... :) john ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- "When they came for the 2nd Amendment, I said nothing, for I owned no gun Then the sixth was next to go, and I remained silent, as I was not on trial They took away the fourth, and I said nothing, as I had nothing to hide And then they came for the First, and I could say nothing." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- john-at- http://www./~john 81 (SJ) & 88 (XJ) Jeep Wagoneer Limited Snohomish, WA - where jeeps don't rust, they mold. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Real freedom comes from knowing Him who made us free... -----------------------------------------------------------------------------[Back to Top]
