includes Breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday. Also breakfast
on Sunday before you depart for home. They are lots of fun. I am going to
do the Georgian Bay Jamboree in Parry Sound Ontario. Jeep Jamboree Canada
said it has a trail rated 10, I love a challenge. Oh yea the money also
covers the cost of your spotters and trail guides.

Here is something that affects all of us... Please email the
fcc with your comments. Many of us pay extra to have a second
line that we only use for connection to our isp, and don't use
all the services offered.

email your comments or opposition to this move by the teleco's to:

 isp-at-fcc.gov

BTW, it appears the FSJ-List is taking a holiday again, so I've reverted
to the old cc list, many of you may get duplicates of this message...

BTW: FSJ - have scanner working, will be adding some ORC reader pages later
today or tomorrow: Alan Bennett, Tommy, Mark Wallace, and the hinge setup

Joe: Hope this helps it's from the Jeep wiring diagram for '84/'85 GW's &
trucks-
The Violet wire (purple) comes from defogger switch to defogger timer. The
orange wire comes from the timer to the defogger. The red should be main
power to rear taillight switch from circuit breaker -at- fuse block & the black
should be ground. Hope this is close for a Cherokee. Tom C

Subject: Additional charges on my telephone?

To: FCC
re: a policy under review to impose per minute charges
---------------------------------------------------------

I understand that there is a proposal under review by your office that is
supported by the telephone companies to impose additional / per minute
charges on the use of the telephone lines (for internet service?).

I am paying for an extra telephone line into my home that I only use locally
to connect to my ISP. My ISP pays a large sum of money for the line that
connects their service to the internet.

My use of that extra telephone line is limited to local use only, yet I am
paying the normal rate and all Federal and local taxes for that line, in
addition to my regular phone line.

The argument that my use of this line hinders the operation of the telephone
network is a weak based on the revenue created by others like myself who pay
the full price for a line used to connect locally, and used infrequently.

If these per minute charges are imposed it will adversely affect a new
industry and many businesses that are now using the internet to advertise
their goods and services. It will also directly affect my small business,
and many others like it, that build web pages for other businesses.

If these charges are imposed it will most likely result in alternative
connections to local ISP's that might adversly affect other FCC allocated
communication bands. I know that I will research other means of
communications to my ISP in order to avoid these charges.

I sincerely hope that this measure is not approved. The telephone companies are
a well established industry that need to adapt to the changes in technology
without imposing charges that will hinder the growth of an emerging and
promising means of communicating.

If the telephone companies are concerned about costs then they should look
at how (and why) they sell time to long distance providers, and perhaps
manage that asset more wisely. To impose time charges on local use seems
unreasonable, irresponsible and appears to be a means in which to produce
additional profit at the expense of the consumer.

An alternative to covering the costs of upgrading the teleco systems is to
charge a one time fee when adding a second line to a residence that would
cover the costs of adding the circuitry at the dial central office to handle
the additional load. I'm sure that the amortized cost of one additional
connection used locally will not be unreasonable.

I've heard of many people receiving a "special" no-cost installation of a
second phone line by the local telephone company. If the telephone companies
are so concerned about the impact to the telephone network, WHY DO THEY
ACTIVELY PROMOTE IT'S USE and even provide internet services??? This
appears to be a contradiction of purpose and might even be a means of
restricting smaller ISP's from competing. The telephone companies have a
monopolistic holding in the communication field by default. It would be
very costly for another competitor to come in and build an infrastructure
using their right of ways.

Since most telephone companies are converting (or have converted) to digital
switches, fiber optics and sophisticated multiplexing equipment the argument
that a local connection will adversly affect the operation of the telephone
network is technologically weak and an argument pushed forward in hopes that
those approving or reviewing this policy are ignorant or unaware of the
technology involved. Unfortunately, most of our elected officials seem to
fall into this category.

Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to express my concerns about this policy.

Sincerely,

John Meister

Subject: Project Chief (Part 7)

Hi to all,

Real quiet out there today. No digest this morning? Server down?

Chief now Rhino Lined from front to back inside. Pretty cool stuff, MUCH
quieter inside and heat from floorboards is greatly reduced.
Will definitely write up tech article on this aspect of buildup as I learned a
lot. Wanted inside roof sprayed too since I had headliner off. Owner told
me couldn't do it. Would drip too much. Tech guy said no problem could
have done it, said he almost called me to ask if I wanted it done but got
busy and forgot.
ARGH!!!!!!!

Gas smell seems to be exhaust fumes being sucked inside when rear
window open. Checked it out last night. Carb ok (a little rich), no leaks to
or from tank, no exhaust leaks. Drove w/o rear window open and
problem seemed to go away.
Any body had this same problem?
Will a rear wind deflector clear this up? Too darn hot in the
summer around here to drive w/o rear window open for air flow if a/c
not working.

Oil pressure problem seems to be better now, suspect vehicle may just
need to be driven more. Basically it has been sitting up for several years
now.

STILL TO DO:
Rekey rear window lock and column lock.
Weatherstripping of doors etc.
Reinstall headliner, door coverings etc.
Reinstall seats, belts etc.
Add speakers for radio.
Paint when affordable (maybe next month)
Masterac Security Console (I have a Tuffy in CJ - it's great!) (ASAP)
Safari Roof Rack
Outside rear spare tire carrier. (maybe)
Fix or replace A/C

Will try to write up overall buildup to date this weekend and organize
pictures. Will write up Rhino Lining as a separate article.

From: Sam Lewis <wagoneer-at-tehabi.com>
Subject: LIST ADMINISTRATION

Fellow FSJers lend me your ears,

As many of you could tell, the server took a dive Wednesday evening. I got
it back up Thursday morning but there is a backlog of 28 messages X 139
subscribers. It should be cleared up by noon or so today.

But I think its time I set some Administrative guidelines for this list.
When it started with about 40 people we could afford to be very casual in
our messages and in the administration of it. Now we are up to 139
subscribers and still 50-100 messages a day if not more.

So I'll start with a couple of policies:

Attatchments -
Will no longer be allowed, ever. They just cause too many problems. The
outage last night was caused by a 1.2 megabyte message sent to the list
(twice). This would have resulted in 166.8 megabytes of information to be
processed by the server. By the way, I am in no way chastising the person
that sent the message. It was a kind gesture of sharing information. But
the server can't take it, and not every subscriber can afford to receive
this size of file.
So if you have files you want to share, talk to some of the memebers of the
list who have web sites PRIVATELY and get them to put the file on their
site. Then tell the list the address of the file.

Bounced messages and Bad addresses -
About every 4-5 weeks I get 100-200 bounced messages a day from a bad
address. This can be caused by a major outage on the internet backbones or
a minor one. Or by a problem with the receipients mail server or
connection. Or a full mailbox on the receipients end. (Juno users - you
have a very restrictive size limit on individual messages and your total
mailbox).
So from now on, after 5 bounced messages from a single address, that
address will be put in digest mode. After 5 bounced digests, that address
will be removed from the list. You are free to resubscribe when the problem
clears. But I would really appreciate if you did a "review" of the list
before coming to me about your problem. If you are not in the review,
resubscribe, then give it a day. After that you may send your questions my
way. Please make yourself familiar with the commands the listserver accepts
and use them.

I am not complaining here, understand that. I still enjoy running this
list. But as the subscriber base goes up so does the time it takes to
administer the list. So I am really just trying to reduce the time needed
so that I can continue to do it. Besides, my truck needs a LOT of work and
I need to find some time to do it ; - )

You can have your ears back now.

There is a difference on the torque converters / flex plates, one of
them has a notch... don't recall which... As far as the bolt patterns,
I'd think they're the same. I've been looking at doing the I-6 thing
in Old Blue... the only difference I've found so far is the crank shape

BTW, the TH400's used with adapters are shorter, as previously discussed,

Usually the only FSJs I see are parked...mostly permanently or
semi-permanently...
Haven't seen a 2-door Cherokee on the road since around Christmas, and
that was in Dallas. I guess the flat land around here keeps folks from
wanting them.
I occasionally see 4-doors on the road, and there were actually 3 full
size Wags in the paper on Sunday for sale...usually there aren't any at
all.

Michael,
The lenses on the J trucks (at least mine anyway) has the upper outer edge
tapering inward. I think they were the same as the early Cheros.

Regarding the thriftsides,I think all the later ones where short boxes.
I've never measured a later stepside but I *think* they were shorter than
7'????? Weren't all the Honchos/Golden Eagles etc short box only? Maybe 7'
IS the shortbox?
Indeed thriftsides are rare! That I'm sure about :)

That's <news://news.ihub.com/jeep-l> Seems an "s" is missing from the

You may have to configure <news-at-ihub.com> as a news server for it to work.

Subject: Rust Removal on FSJs -Reply

Jeff - Replying to both you and the list as your question is probably the
same as many of us have (or will have).
First understand that rust is just like cancer, you have to cut it out
completely to get rid of it. Had this done on worst spot on tailgate (bottom
edge) and new piece welded in.
Second your problems sound more extensive than mine, so some of
what I am about to say may not apply, but most will.
Third the rust may well return after 5 or 6 years anyway, especially if
you live in a wet climate (I do), but if you do the work yourself it is well
worth the savings. (Body shops are expensive!)
Floorboards, passenger footwells and underside of passenger and
cargo area roof were wirebrushed, scraped, sanded and then ground to
get as much of rust and loose scale out as possible. My rust issues here
were not structural in nature.
I then applied "rust converter" (goes by different names but can be found
at Walmart, Auto Stores etc.) to the affected areas. This agent
'converts" the rust to Hematite after 24 hours (it will turn black).
Understand that you must still have some active rust in the area for it to
be effective so do not grind rust completely out.
Hematite must then be lightly sanded and primed over before fiberglass
or Bondo is applied. I then applied a minimum of two layers of fiberglass
matting and resin to floorboards and up side walls (about 2" up).
After properly cured, sand high spots down, prime and paint (or in my
case cover with Rhino Liner).
Any areas that are structural or supporting in nature, I would probably
have new pieces cut and welded in after cutting out the old pieces. If it
was in an area That was hidden than you could possibly, use the
converter and then weld in a new piece over.
Your roof pillar area may possibly be treated by using the rust converter
and Bondo, just make sure that you squirt rust converter back in far
enough to stop any further rusting.
I had the same problem with the door jambs, but it was not severe.
Treated it with rust converter and then covered this area with liner as
opposed to putting threshold cover plate back on.
Regards
Rick

Rick, I saw your post on the FSJ list today about your FSJ Cherokee
project. I have a '78 4-door Cherokee that I have grown quite fond of
since I acquired it in November. The problem is that it has rust in the
front floor boards, and at the intersection of the windshield pillar and
roofline, and also at the intersection of the rocker panels and the door
jams at the front of the front doors. I would be interested in hearing
about where your Cherokee was rusty, what you did to remove the rust
or
replace the part, and what products and steps you took to keep the rust
from coming back. The body shop I visited said the rust would come
back
after 5 or 6 years...not what I wanted to hear. I have done some body
work before and would like to find out what others have done to beat
this problem.

Thanks for your time!

Is that safe? I always heard not to drive around with the rear window
open because it sucked fumes into the truck and could asphyxiate you.
I'd like to keep mine open too, if it won't kill me...

Does the ignition key unlock the doors? On my Javelin, that was the
case, and the rounded key unlocked only the trunk. Right now, I can't
lock or unlock ANY of my doors with either key, I'm just wondering which
SHOULD work...

Joe- just out of curiosity, how much was their gasket kit? I was not
impressed with the kit I got from Brian's in re to quality. Do you remember
my post where I said that the QT input seals one can get from the dealer are
poor compared to Federal-Mogul? There is a giant gap in quality. Now that I
grabbed the SWEET QT out of that Cherokee in the 'yard, I'm gonna put new
seals and gaskets in it when I add one of my spare reduction units to said QT.
If I have to, I'll buy the gaskets all seperately from Federal (if I can) in
order to get decent ones.

Thanks

Been doing a whole bunch of other stuff (school) so I haven't been here
for a few days. Anyway got to see the pictures that John (In Washington)
took on my Cross Country trip last summer. So when John loads them all up
onto a machine y'all get to see:

1.) My bumper mount CB Antenna (11.5 feet from the ground to the top)
2.) My rear bumper off an 83 Wagoneer Brougham (notice no plastic
bumperettes in the rear, but at least one is still on up front)
3.) My Different grille from John's (off the same 83 Brougham, same as
the origional, but I took a bird through the origional...it's on the
    wall of my bedroom)
4.) The effect of John's add-a-leaf (I had just replaced my springs about
two weeks before giving me an additional two inches, before it was
    the real saggin' wagon)
5.) Some of my brother's Junk in the back...we ended up renting a U-haul
trailer so that I could change lanes safely without waking my brother
and so that we could take all of one of my brother's friends from
high school's junk back to NM from Washington.
6.) My garish yellow New Mexico license plate 269-FSZ
7.) ME!

Another thing to keep in mind is that both Jeeps are 1981 Wagoneer
Limiteds, mine built about 3 months before John's and with maybe about
15,000 more miles on the clock.

Great Trucks.

I did on my 78 J-10. No cats, just 2 pipes and
short turbo mufflers that exited right in front of rear tires.
No problems at all. The gas tank on a j-truck is located
different than a Cherokee.

Maybe you'd better define "true" dual exhaust. I do have separate pipes
running from each exhaust manifold to separate glass packs and then
separate pipes to the rear tire. Does this qualify? Oh yeah, I have a
'77 J20 with 360 V8, Th400 AT, BW QT with Low range.

What do you want to know?
