I got to a scanner again... :)

I've got all the new pictures loaded into:

http://www./~john/JEEP/stormpix.html

this rascal takes a long time to load... sorry, all jpg files
all loaded at once... the final product will be easier on ya... :)
Will probably be removing any redundant or less than perfect pictures,
figure I'd put them all there for the time being until I can get them
placed in some text...

you can get there by going to my JEEP page, selecting either
the escape story or the 18 wheel thing... links at bottom of
those pages to stormpix...

http://www./~john/JEEP/JEEP.html

keep checking the pages, will be tweaking HTML for a couple of weeks
with the new stuff... You might want to wander back to my home page
and check it out... I keep adding stuff and playing around with different
ideas.

oh, yeah, hey Billy, tell Lowell he'll like one of the pictures on
the stormpix page... you'll understand... :)

enjoy...

I know what you mean Brad, My list isn't as lengthy as yours (yet). But it
sounds like you are going it up right, must be a keeper!

While talking to Mick today on the phone, I asked him the question
I have asked so many times...."what is it with these things that
attract us to them like a magnet?" Example this latest fiasco with
the Cherokee.....NO WAY would I have put that kind of effort out for
our car, my van whatever. Before I'd do all that to my precious Chevy van
I'd trade it in on a new one. Hey maybe thats it...Jeep doesn't make em
anymore?

My son told me tonite he saw a guy putting For Sale signs on a j-10 and
a Cherokee or Wag. Sign said Good Parts. I may have to plow my way by there
tomorrow, maybe one of them has a 401 that I would love to rebuild and put
in. :-) Besides I'd love to have a second snow pusher!!

The tool for a dana 44 is around $17 dollars at Auto-Zone, you will need some
snapring pliars also, and there is a hidden snap ring that goes in the outer
circumference of the hub that threw me for a loop! I bent a coat hanger at
a sharp angle then sharpened the tip, it slides that big snapring right out!

It was really hard fo rme to find the proper converter for my 1980 727, it
was $100 dollars, some shops can cut them in half and rebuild them, that
costs about the same, but Can only really be done once, sometimes twice..

Shouldnt be to hard to put in just a converter, but I would pull it out
enought to look at that front pump bushing, ill bet its worn and a new
converter will cause a leak..

also check the flexplate really good NOW is the time to swap it if its bad!

I think you are talking about the valve cover. On the newer sixes
this was a real problem with leakage on the plastic covers.
It was discussed in some detail on the OFF-ROAD List.

 Oh...you figured-out you can't do that already.

With the key on, I do not have any voltage at either post. Sounds like
 ignition switch bad? <<

Joe, the only time you'll have voltage on either of the little terminals on
the starter solenoid is when the ignition switch is in the "start" position.

 >> with his truck running he had 14.7v+ on the + side of the coil. <<

He obviously has an internal resistor coil. YOu have a EXTERNAL resistor coil.

 >> Well after hooking up 12v direct to coil, it got pretty
warm pretty fast. So, I got under the dash and moved the wires
around near the ign switch, bingo...I hear the buzzer to fasten
seat belts (switch was on) I go back to the front, check the coil
voltage and it's about 6-8 volts....exactly as the book says.
I need that resistor in the circuit!

6 volts +/- .5 volts with the ignition switch in the on position with the
engine OFF.

 >> I want to drive it more than 15 miles! <<

It's been said plenty of times in the past. It ain't over till the fat lady
sings. In other words, your FSJ goes more than 15 miles w/o stalling.

Michael Baxter <74172.1164-at-CompuServe.COM> that butt-head who is not allowed
to type after midnight violated his probation and wrote the following totally
incorrect data....uh...after midnight:

 >> Bruce Maxwell writes:

 >> Yes...I had the same problem with my 1970 Cougar. It would start and
run as long as I had the key in the start position. When I released
the key the car would start running. The shop I took it to replaced the
distributor and then the ignition switch and then finally the wire from
the switch to the coil. The new wire took care of it. <<

That's the exact symptoms of a bad starter solenoid since it switches the 12V
to the coil for starting. The main power wire to the coil from the ignition
switch on FSJs is a 1.35 ohm resistance wire. <<

That is not the symptoms of a bad starter solenoid. I was WRONG. That is the
symptoms of a bad ignition switch.

Subject: Grand Wag Questions

Greetings All! I am new to the list and I had a few questions for the FSJ
experts out there.

I have an 86 Grand Wagonner 360 Stock

The questions I have are about engine performance.
#1
After I have been driving for a while and then stop the GW I have a tough time
starting it again unless I hold the pedal to the floor. I have spoken to a
mechanic and he seems to feel that the gas is being boiled out of the fuel
filter leaving no gas for the ignition process. It seems like Vapor lock to me,
any suggestions?

#2

What is the best dollars for performance upgrade. I would like to get better
gas milage out of the 360 ( I get about 10-13 now). Should I look into a new
Carb or a new ignition system and which one?

Thanks in advance!

On my way to work on my 91 Grand Wagoneer, I yield another Jeep into my
lane. It is a green ZJ body jeep with wood panel wall paper on it. The on
front passanger fender, I saw "Grand Wagoneer", on the tailgate on the
right side saids "V8", I forget what it said on the right side.

OK, now, I thought "Grand Wagoneer" name ends 92 models, could there
possibly be "Grand Wagoneer"s made in Grand Chorkee body? Any owners out
there?

My '78 Cherokee 4-dr. also has the Levi's interior. The seats, front

have a strip of tan denim trim as well. Mine is in pretty bad shape,
and I have been asking around to see who (if anyone) has had their's

I just bought one of the tools you mentioned a week ago at Car Quest.
It is a big socket that has teeth cut in it to fit on the indentions in
the lock nuts. $16, which wasn't bad considering Pep Boys, Auto Zone,
and the dealer all said they didn't have it. Check with a Car Quest or
other independent auto parts dealer, they seem to stock more tools than
the Big Boys.

Off-Road Unlimited has the rebuild kit. It's about $64 I think. They
have ads in all the 4X4 mags. I didn't actually buy one from them, but
they said they could order it for me.

Well for $64 bucks it must only be the seals. A new chain is somewhere
around $125-150 itself.
But., that's good to know, thats probably cheaper than buying it all

I had the same problem...had to go to Car Quest...or try a NAPA or other
independent. The other thing you can do is look for a Snap-On or MAC
tools truck. They sell these to the guys who work in the auto shops.
It'll be cheaper at a Car Quest/Independent shop though. I'd offer to
mail you one, but it would be at least a week to get there, plus a few
bucks for shipping.

A thought...

Nothing unusual here... my 88 XJ says wagoneer limited, just like Old Blue...

they just made an expensive Grand Cherokee, loaded it to the rafters with
options, slapped on wall paper and called it a grand wagoneer...

just more confusion for owners... questions like, is this the downsized
one? is it the big one? is it the one that looks like a minivan? etc...

SJ, XJ or ZJ ? (and not everyone knows the designators, including the jeep dealers... :)

mid 40's plus through the next 4 or 5 days... :)

Maybe I'll have some time to actually clean, lubricate and retighten
stuff on the jeeps... Maybe even try to adjust that set screw thingamajigee
on the side of Old Blue's carb to help his cold start/run thing so
he quits belching and puking when he first wakes up... :)

Hey, I put the picture of the spare tire carrier up on my page...

http://www./~john/JEEP/spare.jpg

so you can see it... also, if you browse through the storm pictures you'll
see it without the spare on it... had to adjust it, still do... so I pulled
the spare, which really wasn't the spare, but a flat that needs to be fixed
and wasn't really in that sense a spare, if ya know what I mean... :)

spring fever??? Maybe we'll go swimming tonight... :) yeah, right...

Lots of hillsides moved around here... been here 11 years, some of these
hillsides haven't moved for quite a while, if ever, but they moved this
year... saw one guy's garage on the wrong side of the road... in a heap..
found out why my back road was closed... mud slide blocked one lane completely,
still one lane...

anyway, heard about the snow in AZ... <snicker, snicker> had to rub it in...

later,
john

Nope, not a Chief update, but a Cherokee update.

We plowed snow from 8 am to 1 pm, not a single miss!
Ran great, plenty of power. It could use some
ballast in the rearend though.

Life is good!

John,

Your page has some really good pix on it. I like your idea for the FSJ
logo very much. With a little refinement I think it would be the perfect
logo for these Big Old Beasts.

Good for you, I think it is East Coast turn to get belted with white
stuff, today and tomorrow. Shouldn't be too bad in Boston Area, 1 to 3
inches and freezing rain. This will be my first time with my FSJ in snow.

I like those light you mounted on the spoiler. My GW doesn't have one of
those airplne wings. I got to search junk yard for one-o-those.

thanx Brian,

any of you FSJ types out there have any s/w tools or art skills better than
mine (which is probably all of ya...), please copy that down, or email
me and I'll send ya a couple different base images I copied down off the
net...

We want to be careful not to violate superman's trademark, so we have to
modify it so it's not the same thing... at least... I doubt the folks
that own it will mind too much, however, if we get it done nicely, before
we really get carried away with using it or creating decals for our rigs,
we should probably get permission...

I think it would be cool to make some vinyl stickers like that for our rigs...
so let's first get it cleaned up, lookin' good, and then go for the blessings
of however owns the superman symbol, just so we're doin' the right thing...

I would guess if we used different colors we wouldn't have a problem, but the
colors used by superman are nice, bright primary colors that work well with
Old blue... :)

I'll pass on the extra doors, I'll load the backend with bags of softener salt
or concrete blocks. Didn't realize till today how tired the old J-10 was,
this thing seems to have twice the power :-)

You get the design you want and I'll get my son to make them.
That's his line of work. Check them out at:

If it's vinyl, they can do it!
We should be able to get them at cost :-)

If we could work the F & J into the diamond area where the S is the we
wouldn't need to worry about the copyright because it would be
significantly different. At least that is my limited understanding of how
the copyrights work. I think it has to be at least 10% or 15% different.

Can't help with your problem, Kirk, but if you need to 'run to launch

this isn't a copyright issue, but a Trademark one... However, if we do place the
F and the J inside the triangle, you're correct, it would no longer be the same as
the superman logo... They could still come after us, but the likelihood of that
happening, or their success in the courts would be extremely unlikely...

Care to take a shot at it? anybody... ?

who's this snow-hawg dude with a rotating yellow beanie? :)

you could also make a clamp arrangement to attach to the rack or over the back part of
the sheetmetal... better yet, make a bracket that you could screw on from UNDERNEATH
that back lip and have the lights below the roof line... much better for brush...

shouldn't be a big problem for loading... you could rig something up for the back,
maybe a mini-flip up light bar...

I try to keep stuff tucked inside the rig, or below the roof line... some of these
mountain trails get overgrown with brush... even have to "squeak" through with the
xj wagoneer.... nice thing about the wallpaper though, it usually doesn't scratch... :)
