Cool idea! It could really bloster our ranks and provide further resources for
our problems, er, questions.

Comes in a plastic bag and looks like rope. Upon closer inspection it
becomes clear that it it closed cell foam! 'Bout 1/2 in. diameter I used
but it comes in different sizes.

Ain't it du trooth. I think most of the shotty work comes not from the
backyard mechanic but from places that carge you $50-$60 an hour for it.

I'm getting a very small tranny leak from the speedo cable attachment point.

I didn't mention that I pulled the door skin off the front passenger door.
I was getting a leak there- around the bottom. It's off now pending
further diagnostics. My speaker was getting soaked- I know that. I also
know I was leaking around the speaker cover as evidenced by rust in that
location. I'm gonna try the following for a fix- please comment as you see
fit.

I'm gonna pull that plastic sheeting off completely and use 2" wide
aluminum tape to cover *all* the holes. That stuff is great- completely
water proof once affixed (it can cut the bugger out of you though!). I
should only need sheeting for the lower six inches of the door where there
is a large hole about a foot long or so. Should make maintenance a lot
easier on my power windows and power locks that only semi-operate. Instead
of having to be really carefull pulling that sheeting loose, I can just
peel the tape off where I need it. You won't be able to see through the
tape but hey- looking through that sheeting is like looking through wax
paper anyway.

Subject: New Guy Introduction

Hi,

I just found this list and wanted to get myself introduced before
asking a bunch of questions, and joining in on discussions

I currently own a '73 Wag 360 that I picked up for $300, not
running, but if good condition otherwise. After an engine rebuild,
some fuel and electrical system troubleshooting shes running and
smogged for California. But there is more work required...

This is the second Wag I've owned. I had a '79 (Limited?) which I
also got a good deal on. I've rebuild most of both engines (I can't
believe how cheap the parts were!), so could possibly offer some
tips there. I've also had the first one AIRBORN, and buried in
mud up to the axles, and can probably offer some advice there too!

I have a BSME and nearly an MSCS, and write software for Hewlett
Packard in Sacramento Ca. I'm 39, married with a 2 YO son. I'm
also a MoPar muscle car nut and have a '68 Charger 440 that I'm
restofying. I'm on a MoPar list too and from time to time they get
into Jeep issues. If anyone is interested I can point you to it.

I frequent the local wrecking yards and know of several Wagoneers,
Cherokees, and J-20s (that's what they call the PU, right?) if
anyone is interested. You can find relatively rust free older (into
the '60s) Jeeps around here from time to time and I could keep an
eye out for them if anyone is looking.

Thanks for your time, and I look forward being on this list!

PS: Is it kosher to e-mail parts for sale on this list? I have a couple
    items I'd like to sell.

I had do this on my '90 when I had it rebuilt in Nov. $220 is what the

Oh yeah, I pulled my leaky speedo cable off, cleaned the threads on the
t-case and cable, sprayed it with white lithium grease, and reassembled.

Did you notice any other symptoms? This summer, I noticed that the oil
pressure seemed to run lower when I put 10W-40 in the engine than when I
used 10W-30. I had a theory that the engine was starving for oil because
it was collecting in the top of the engine. I thought that maybe the oil
return pathes were clogged with sludge. Is it possible that a plugged
screen of pickup tube would cause this type of problem?

In my 78 with Quadra-Trac, I can have the pan off in about 15 minutes. the
hardest part is the top starter bolt, I just use about 4 feet of extension
and a universal. I also have access to a bay in a repair station, which
makes it a lot easier

Subject: Time for new tires - help!!

Yep.. it's come time to put a new set of tires on my 88 Grand Wagoneer again.

Here in SC we don't see much snow or ice so those conditions aren't really
a factor in buying 'em. I would like something that would take to heavy
rain well and tackle very mild off road conditions. Of course ride comfort
and handling are very important also. I still want my GW to drive like the
big ole land yacht that it is.

Last factor: to white wall.. or not to white wall. I'm sure this all has
to do with what's available.

Price? I'd like to spend less than $100 bucks a tire.

Thanks for any comments, suggestions, good experiences or bad experiences!

forever to load too...

added a links page to ORC. Only have michael's, doc's, joe's, the archive and mine there
now... I'll put the ones I have up there later... or email...

my ftp is still broken on my site. the sysop just upgraded the kernel, he'll get it worked out

still haven't gotten to a scanner to scan in my new business card, Alan's and Tommy's pictures.

Hello all-
Just two quick questions:
What is the highest rated alternator the stock wiring harness can safely
handle (mine just seized) well, come to think of it, does it matter if you
don't have the draw... In other words if you have the 105A version does it
matter if you have all stock acc.?
Two, my oil press. usually runs about 40 on the gauge, but when I run
the J on the highway, it goes to 80!! Can I trust the gauge? I don't see any
seal busting leaks...
Thanks

Subject: Day in the life of FSJ

A short story about a day in the life of my '77.

This past Saturday was Cub Scout Pinewood Derby. I am official keeper
of the track, and haul it in my Cherokee (couple inches to spare from
rear glass to front windshield).

There was a cold rain falling on the evening we had to setup. I decided
to pull the Jeep up on the sidewalk under the "roof". I thought that
there were no school officials around, and it wouldn't hurt anything.

It was a piece of cake to drop into low range and back up over the 8"
curb. All was well until a couple hours later when I thought "oh no,
what if it drips oil/trans fluid on the sidewalk!" I figured it was too
late to move then. But to my surprize, when it came time to leave,
probably four hours later, there was not a drop on the sidewalk.

FSJs do have good manners!

I dont have this problem yet (only 1 86gw) but check out some boat storage
sites, Check with a county fair grounds they often have off season storage
You can often get these for a reasonable small fee, There usually open areas,
no security but who's going to steal parts off a FSJ??? -:)

You can get for a couple hundred $$ a U-store it locker that can hold a lot.

ALL:
The FSJ list has been getting bigger and bigger. Some of the info is
useful some is ramblings.. For most of us who don't have all day to read
email I have a few suggestions... Yea I know I am sometimes guilty but I
try to clean things up..

1) IF you reply to a message EDIT out what is no longer important, You don't
need four copies of the "how to unsubscribe" message imbedded in various
messages that have been replayed many times. Edit out the signature lines or
least part of it. The cute FSJ pix are ok, but they are not needed in
REPLYS. I have seen some messages with 5 or 6 sig lines and headers with a
topic being reply to by many.

2) Change the subject if the subject has changed.. If your not talking about
FSJ seats then change the subject. Almost every mailer lets you change the
subject.

3) If the reply is suppose to be a person to person reply DON'T reply to the
list. Take a second to reset the to line. Again mailers allow you to do this.

Enough of my ramblings.. Food for thought..
