The package included "fancy side body and lower tape striping, bright yellow reveals, chrome bumpers, flipper quarter, alum wheels (mod 16 had small hubcaps), roof rack and an "S" on the rear side panel" Seems from year to year the 'S' trim package changed regarding seat material, paint schemes etc. By 81 the 'S' was a step up but not as far up as the full boat luxo cruiser Laredo package. It does mention an interesting note though: that for 82 as in 81 the Chief package was standard for the 4 door and optional for the 2 door model 17. Hummm...didn't know they had narrow track Chiefs....? Well anyway it was a trim package :) Regards, -jj[Back to Top]

Jon, Sounds like something foreign has gotten into your engine. I checked the heads on my dismantled '78 401 engine (similar heads) and the plug is recessed enough that the piston would hit the bottom of the head before it hit the spark plug. That might eliminate loose/stretched rod bolts. Something, (bolt, nut, carb part) probably went into the cylinder and rattled around, flattening your pug tip and may have gotten out again. The backfiring would have been caused while the valve was stuck open as the part entered/exited. The bad news is something is probably bent/broken as a result. The piece may be stuck in the piston, or if the valve was unable to close far enough, the piston may have hit it and bent it. Also, the rod for that cylinder may now be bent. Sounds like at least a compression check and leakdown check are in order. The best way would be to pull the head and have a look. A friend of mine bought a used Mustang that had a slight knock on occasion. It had a small bolt pounded into the top of the piston! If the part is gone, no further damage is likely, but I wouldn't wait too long to investigate. It might still be in there. Good Luck, Art[Back to Top]

If anyone's interested in a well used & rusty truck, let me know. It's almost to the point of being considered a "wood hauler". the specs are: 173,000 miles showing (the speedo cable's been broke 2 years, I've got one for it but too lazy to put it in). 6 cyl. (232, the 258 bit the bullet years ago) which is a little weak. TH400 & quadratrac (both rebuilt about 3 years ago) Front springs have major sag (the rears are interesting- there are only 2 leaves- their rather thick thou). The axles have 4.09 gears. The floor has been fiberglassed along the way, the bed is rusted out at the seams. No dents thou. Windshield has no cracks, but some fogging at bottom. Tailgait has some rust in bottom. Brown on top, white on bottom. Aftermarket am/fm radio. No clock. Bench seat (tips forward). 7.00 x 15LT mud & snow tires with approx 60% tread left. All this & much much more for the paltry sum of 600 bucks. Please dont stampede to get to it! Remember, it's just a truck :) We are a civilize lot, aren't we?:) If I don't get any suckers..oops, I mean pilgrims....oops, I mean informed consumers (yea, thats it) I probably part it out.
