So all this 'kit' consists of is plug wires, coil and
brainbox?? Sheez...$80 for plug wires? I'd have to
see test data to justify that.

On a race engine I could see that and more, but we're talking
about an AMC here....

Changing this fluid sounds like a good project, any tips for
doing this? How much fluid does it take for both axles, dana 44.

Id have to assume, it only uses the dist for a reference point, then can vary
the actuall firing a little either way ( via computer control)

Joe,

Don't worry, we can help you get your leaks back! Try losening the diff
cover bolts, the bolts that hold the t-case to the tranny, and the power
stearing hols fittings! That ought to get some good leaks going. If that
doesn't get things good and oily, losen the transmission pan bolts too
(if its an auto). Losening the valve cover gaskets usually gets some good
drippage as well.

Let us know if it works!

You don't need to thank me, thats what we're here for!

what is a viable way to compare wires by specs, is the resistance per foot a
valid factoid?

they advertise <200 ohms per foot ( wire core)

If they fire, they fire right? I mean it is a compressed volume of gas and
air, so the tiniest little spark will set it off right?
Im beginning to wonder if the multispark is even an improvement....

Bruce, thanks for this email which sent me into a fit of laughter so early
in the morning. I could use some of the things that you have listed here
myself, but have given up any hope of aquiring them. Good luck. I could
tell you long and painful story about the radiator that is in my '70, but
suffice it to say that it is no longer OEM. I am going to send you item
number 13. I yanked the heater out of "Dusty" last month, it had too many
things wrong with it. I don't really need a heater in Yuma, because it
only gets down below 40 degrees a few times a year here anyway. The lever
actuated cable that used to go to the heater is now connected to the choke
on my carb. I've got a manual choke now. It's at full choke when the
heater lever is up. I've just got to remember to push the lever down after
the beast starts to warm up.

My msd 6 unit was on my 69 vette. I removed it last summer and went back to
original ign. I could *not* tell a difference! Yes it has a tach. I am pretty
sure the same unit would work on the 360. But, would it help?

I live and breathe still. Sorry that I have had an extended absent from

found a new place to live. It's got a huge barn that has been converted
into a garage.

I don't remember if I told the group about the 74 Cherokee that I bought
last summer. It was in excellent shape until it nuked its engine so now I
need to rebuilt its amc360.

Other than that I am going well and I hope the same can be said for all

John lets do it on the 4th of July weekend. I have already made

our schedule is released to the campus one month in advance. I can see

Sounds like the tranny had a full re-build. The 83's were not well built
and could not tolerate the overwhelming torque of G.M.'s 2.8l. I also
didn't think they put the 700R4 (4L60) behind a V8 but used the 4L80
instead.

Now how do I make this an FSJ post? Oh I know, I'm glad AMC didn't use
the 700R4 in FSJ's.

I know of a company that sales a mult coil ignition system. It has 1 coil
per 2 cylinder. So on a V-8 you have 4 coils. I alos belive that it is a
mult spark system. I will get the phon number and price along with
additon information on it when I get off work tonight and post it to the

I may be repeating myself but My previous Jeep was a CJ-7 with a 258. I
installed a Hooker 6in 2out header and duals. Then had the head milled
0.100. It had tremendous low end power. Everything else was stock. Ran
great for 8 years and was running great at the time I sold it.

John, I know the 351/400M engines to be modified from the 351 design. Recall
the timing chain cover? It is an easy part to see that will identify the
external differences.
Some parts are interchangeable with each other, (351/400M), but not with a
351C/W. I have two of them, in two different trucks and the parts for them
are somewhat specific. Another "Better Idea", I suppose, but I think they
were modified to increase the torque in a small block truck motor. I don't
know if any "M's" were factory installed in cars.

Does anyone have a scanned Vacuum diagram for a '72 J4000 truck, 360, 2bbl?

My tranny is giving me shifting problems again and before install a new Vacuum
modulator I would like to know what the vacuum arrangement is.
(if no diagram is avail...)

What is that little canister that mounts on the right hand side of the engine
for? It is about the size of a yo-yo and has one vacuum hose connected to the
back, and one hose connected to the front, it also has a electrical connection
on it.. And the Air-guard system's By-pass diverter, it has a small vacuum hose
on it, where does this go? Motorcrap 2bbl carb, it has one vacuum connection on
the back and the other on the side, what are these and where do they go? any
answers are appreciated. Air cleaner snorkel, it has a vacuum hose running off
of this...where does it go?

At this time I am just trying the trial and error process from a '73 manual.

Thanks for the RTV info to all who responded.

But I have one other question:

Do I need to replace the little "valve" at the end of the air vent tube to
the front differential? The old one is broken off.

OK, now the truth comes out. The reason I'm changing the oil in the
differential at all is related to this small piece of plastic. After I
changed the fluid return line to my power steering pump, I decided to give
the engine compartment a bath (it was very filthy under there!) After a
good wash down with pretty good water pressure, I noticed I was spraying
water right down the end of a small hose with a broken off plastic cap. I
traced the hose... You guessed it! Right into the front differential.
Well, I'm not to smart, but I know water in the diff is a bad thing. So
that's what kicked off the beginning of the project to change the fluid in
the diffs.

Sometimes I think I'm the reason for most of my "necessary" repairs!

Hell, it ain't her fault.... it's just lack of time, kronky weather (it's
summer here in sunny Florida... quit laughing, Tom), and that's about it.

She may not want to idle, nor start, but she STILL gets me back and forth
to work. So THERE!

The previous record was out in Phoenix when she had no rear driveshaft, no
clutch, no starter, no rear brakes, and a massively leaking rear main seal.
Till the starter went, I still drove her 62 miles each way to work. Right
now, she's just got no starter, not much for rear brakes, no transfer case
chain or bottom, chunks out of the tranny gears, but she doesn't suck oil
into the air cleaner anymore!

Oh, an update on the open PCV conversion, for those interested.... I
think I need to get the proper doohickey for that... The little "peanut"
filter I used doesn't seem to want to stay in the hole, and oil's seeping
around it. But it's still better than filling the air cleaner! Let's see,
what's it been, two weeks, and my air filter is still nice and white (paper
stock-type, haven't gotten around to replacing the K&N yet).

Welp, 'bout time for me to finish this cup of coffee (just got up about 45
minutes ago) and go perform surgery on you-know-who...

HEY GUYS:

The first thing is thanks to john for the great pictures of my fsj on
his page. I showed it to everyone at work, they all got a kick out of it. I
couldn't beleive the spelling mistakes I made, I thought I used the spell
checker, but O well. The update on the page looks great.
The other day I checked out a looks to be a late 60s fsj in a public
lot for selling veh. The owner had cut the roof off from the top of the front
windshield all the way back. It would make a pretty good parts veh. I guess.
I also saw a late 60s fsj in a MTV song video. It was rolling through the
desert with some people on the roof. Didn't like song but the jeep was great. I
surffing the channels when I found it, I don't watch MTV or let my young kids.
I'm thinking of making my own pins to disconnect the sway bar, doesn,t
look to be very diffcult. Anyone had any exp. on the subject. Also might put a
set of white spoke rims 15x8 on and put a set of winter tires on the factory
rim, seen other FSJ with the white spokes, I like the looks.
Those of you that have tilt steering wheel notice any playin the
shaft at the joint, mine seems lose.

Subject: woo hoo!

	She's BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!

I had the kronking phenolic spacer on upside down. Flipped it over,
tossed the carb back on, hit the key, vrummmmmm..... just goes to show,
that true to form, "if it looks like it obviously has to go this way, it
won't fit or work the other way" then it goes on the other way... got the
mixture set somewhat close, idle speeds right on. Well, curb and fast
idle... solevac kronked the bed, or bad wiring or something. She runs
well enough I didn't feel like kronking with her anymore tonight, just
raised the curb idle up a little bit to compensate. Idles almost smooth as
silk. I figure when I get her to the tune-up shop to get the final
adjusting done, and clean the plugs (hey, they don't need replacing yet,
they've only got about 80,000 miles on them - Bosch Platinums), she'll be
like glass!

Whoa, she's got MUCH more power now! And WAY quieter (she never was very
loud anyway)! I can even hear the turn signals now at idle (but not while
moving, because of the tires).

Took the starter back to Pep Boys, they didn't have any more "lifetime
warranty" ones, so they gave me a one-year warranty one and said they'd
honor the lifetime warranty. I said no prob, I've known the managers and
most of the guys working there for years, and besides, there ain't no real
difference. I know, I used to rebuild starters and alternators for a
living... Not for long, though, but enough to know that.

Anyway, I had no problem with that... it's happened before, where they
were temporarily out of stock of the limetime part, and I accepted the
one-year, and never had to replace that part again! So, true enough, this
is the first starter she's had in about five years that sounded correct,
and she's had LOTS of them... cranked 'er up about 50 times, in addition
to the repeated times I had to crank her to fill the carb and fire her up,
and no change, no strange noises, no problems. Cool...

She's alive, ladies and gentlemen, and feeling MUCH better now. Wasn't an
expensive job, either... 12 bucks for the carb kit, 8 for the gallon can
of carb cleaner, about six for all the vacuum hose I bought. Oh, yeah, and
I think six bucks or so for the heater hose and hose clamps, if that much.

BUT.... I lost the "peanut" filter I was using on the PCV system... must
have popped off on the way home this morning, or perhaps on the way to work
last night. Heck, for all I know it could also be sitting on top of the
tranny.... <shrug>. So maybe tomorrow I'll spring for the seven bucks for
a fancy chrome jobber...

Time to take a shower and get ready for work. Ciao!

Folks,
I have a quote of $250 to take out inspect and reseal (using the right

anymore."
I had asked about a complete rebuild. He said if chains and bearings are
OK, leave them alone.
I like this guy, he lives in town (1800 people), has an impeccable rep.
First question -- any "nudges" I should give him on stuff to check?
And, the nagging question, and I'm embarrassed to ask, is this a good
deal?

I guess that the vacuum port on the side of the carb is the "Ported vacuum" so I
hooked this up to the yo-yo thing, then hooked it up to the 1st port on the
TCS. I have a manifold vacuum fitting on the intake manifold by the rear, I
hooked this up to another vacuum fitting at the back of the carb, then hooked it
up to the Air-guard By-pass vacuum, then I hooked it up to the 3rd port on the
TCS. And of course the distributor advance is hooked up to the 2nd port on the
TCS.
Is this right?

I got a real kick out of talking to the older fella who ran the flow test
room (cooling systems). He used to be a motor head in the 60's when Donoho
raced for
AMC. They would cast special cylinder heads & manifolds (but used the
"factory" part No's to cheat the rules) for the race cars. Any of the parts
the race team didn't like, this guy would carry home to put on his Classic.
He said he could blow a Vette away from a light (now that's an image!).

I met some of the group. Mostly the guys related to the cooling system.
The 4.7/3.7L was the last project we worked with (the UAW wouldn't let the

I fixed (?) mine by taking the hose that runs from the fill/vent cap to
the air cleaner, and replacing it with a couple feet of hose (3/8" maybe?)
and went from the vent/filler cap overboard down the front of the motor.
Probably not the most environmentally friendly fix, but I got tired of oily
air cleaners. I also put a plug on the air cleaner side, but come to think
of it, I didn't have to as the fitting is on the outside, so it would have
just been another place for air to get into the filter. Oh, by the way, this
is am AMC V-whatever fix. Mine is a 360 but it should work for any of the
V-8's.
Does anybody know what the OLD AMC V-8 engines are that have a valley pan
like the Chrysler products??? And as I recall, it's rear distributor...

Yeah I know, they're supposed to leak at every possible
spot. It set for four days and no drips, I'd say it's
pretty tight.

Although I still have a puddle on the intake manifold
