Subject: HELP! Broken Turbo Diesel Jeep.....................

An old guy at Church has a 1986 turbo diesel Cherokee that's
wounded. While warming it up it dropped an exhaust valve seat, crunch!
What he is looking for is a 1. a rebuilt long block; 2. a good running
used engine; 3. a rebuilt or good used head.

So if anyone in the Jeep world has a line on something like
what he needs, drop me a msg at skoullar-at-ix.netcom.com

John, I have a tan console (you do mean the thing between the seats,
right?) that I will get rid of. I'm not sure why you'd want it as there
is no storage or places for coffee cups. I pulled it out of mine and put
in a 4 cup, cooler, CD storage console from Canadian Tire. Anyway, it is
tan, it is stock, in good shape and just sitting in the garage. You can
have it for shipping costs.

Subject: fsj's on parade

Have just completed 3 trips in the GW in the last 4 days. 100 mile round
trip to the in-laws to pick up their "old" couch (they're remodeling & the 6
year old living room furniture that's never been sat on (they use the family
room instead) had to go). Didn't have tires on the '83 yet & an old 360 is
still in the back of the '75, so we took the Limited & drove home with the
gate down- the couch was too long to close it (and yes, the fumes were bad!)

The second trip was 125mi. round trip to pick up a set of 31 x 10.5r15
"comanche" tires that a guy had bought to put on an explorer, but they
wouldn't fit. His loss, my gain:) He had gotten them while on a trip, so
couldn't easily take them back. I paid $200. Will have them mounted tomorrow.

On the way back we came across a first gen. wagoneer. It's originally from
Colorado (plates) & there's something wrong under the hood (I could see the
timing chain on the tornado engine peeking from behind the shinny dent free
grill. the residents said it belonged to a friend of their son & would pass
along my number (they want it out of their yard). I'll let you all know if
it turns into anything.

The last trip was to Shelbyville, Tn to pick up my blue dash for the '63
Lark. 580miles - 50.1 gallons of gas. Not exactly a stellar performance,
but we were pushing 65-70mph most of the trip. Highest gas- $1.29 (at
home); Cheapest- $1.06 in Kentucky. Used 1 quart of oil (not bad for 169,500
miles).

The last couple of miles on the interstate were neat, we came upon a GW (a
champagne color w/ wood trim) and a Grand Cherokee. We were a parade for a
while (some dork in the right lane wouldn't get out of way for me to come
along side of the fsj).

This must be a generation gap thing or something. REAL vehicles don't have
cup holders:) (that's what that space between the seat & the door are for,
right).

Sonya is kidding... "what's a CD"? Can you play her "Saturday Night Fever"
8 track on it?? If God had wanted a 1 gallon cup (Sonya's favorite)in a
car, he'd have done it a long time ago.

From: Chrisharon-at-aol.com
Subject: Tilt steering column fix

This is what I did to fix a loose steering column (at the pivot point for
the tilt) on a '78 Cherokee. Hopefully this will be of help to others with
the same problem.
Special equipment required: Universal puller set (this is what I used) or
                                            perhaps a regular steering wheel
puller.

1) Disconnect battery
2) Remove horn button
3) Remove large nut and washer on steering shaft.
4) Remove the 3 screws in plastic insulator for horn button. Remove as an
assembly: plastic insulator, metal dish, and metal plate.
5) Scribe an alignment mark from steering shaft to steering wheel so you can
reassemble with the wheel in the correct orientation.
6) Use steering wheel puller and remove steering wheel.
7) Remove plastic anti-theft plate.
8) Install steering wheel puller over steering shaft, (be careful not to
crush the plastic cancelling cam (it's also where the horn circuit comes
through)
and tighten shaft nut and washer (that you already took off) over puller.
9) Use two bolts and nuts and install with bolt through puller, with nut on
the
bottom so you can use the bolts to push on (compress) the steering lock
plate.
10) Remove clip from steering shaft. NOTE: My Jeep technical service manual
sais NOT to re-use this clip. I've had mine out twice and have re-used
it both
      times, the decision is yours.
11) Decompress lock plate.
12) Remove steering nut, washer, and steering wheel puller.
13) Remove lock plate.
14) Remove cancelling cam, and spring.
15) Remove 4 bolts securing support brace to steering column under dash.
16) Remove 2 bolts securing support to dashboard.
17) Remove column support brace.
18) Disconnect wiring coming from under the column, remove plug from it's
holder
      and leave hanging.
19) Remove screw holding turn signal switch handle to switch assembly.
20) Remove 3 screws holding turn signal switch (you'll have to turn the
switch to get
      to all 3 screws).
21) Remove turn signal switch, you should be able to feed the wired up
through the
column to give you enough slack to do this. You can get a little more
slack by
lifting the plastic cover (under the column) over the wires.
22) I did this step, but I don't know if it's required or not. Put key in
ignition lock.
Turn to locked position. You should be able to see a small bar coming
out of the
end of the lock. Just to the right of that is a small slot, inert a
small screwdriver
into the slot and push. Remove key lock assembly.
23) Use a pair of long nose pliers, and remove spring clips from shift
indicator on top
      of steering column.
29) Remove shift indicator.
30) Remove 2 screws on top of column, shift indicator light, and metal cover.
31) Remove tilt handle.
32) Remove upper column housing (Painted housing where ignition key goes).
33) Reinstall tilt handle.
34) Tilt steering wheel in full up position.
35) Their's a round metal piece towards the bottom with a square hole in it.
Using a screwdriver, push in and turn about 1/4 turn until this piece
comes out.
36) If it didn't come out with the metal cup in the above step, remove
spring.
37) Using a puller tool (I made my own) remove pivot pins. This is what I
did:
Get a 1/2" open end wrench, the screw that came out of the turn
signal
handle, a washer & a nut that will fit the screw. Install nut
onto screw until
it bottoms out, and install washer against nut. Put the 1/2"
wrench over the
pivot pin (make sure the pin will go through the wrench ends when
it's pulled
or you'll strip something out). Install the screw into the pin,
and tighten the
nut until the pin is loose. This is what *I* did, something
else,may work
           better for you.
38) Hold the housing on the column, pull on the title handle, and remove the
housing.

That's all the disassembly their is. Their should be 4 loose bolts after
that.
They're not regular bolts, they look almost like a torque bit. I used a 12pt
1/4" drive
socket (don't remember what size). Remove one bolt at a time, clean it,
apply locktight, and reinstall. Then reverse the disassembly instructions
and you're finished. The pivot pins just press back in, not a problem.
Hopefully I didn't leave out too many steps. If anybody uses this info,
please let me know how accurate or helpful this was, and feel free to add to
this, I just went by memory here. I don't know what all years will be
exactly the same. This how-to could also be used for lock replacement, just
stop after step 22.

My Cj had this cupholder that would empty my drink and then force me to

I'm sorry, but this isn't a generation gap issue. THIS IS A TASTE ISSUE.

sheesh! DISCO???????? Come on now! You have to be kidding!! Country I

I still think that's somewhat suspicious <bg>. You may think it's
missing doors and cylinders...but at least it still has
floorboards...and Oh yeah, I think I recall it having a better 0-60 time

You traded a camera for a couple cheap 4-door bodies? Wow, that was an
expensive camera.

I really don't know... I was talking to a guy at the jeep dealer to
see if they'd sponsor it, and he said maybe... I'll follow up this
week... Maybe with them providing some food, space to park, parts to
raffle off???? I don't know, never done anything like this
before...

.... we've entered a whole new realm of public relations that I'm
clueless about, but I learn fast... :-)

No camping... I'm not equipped, prepared or interested...

I'd think the folks coming in from out of town will need a place to
stay...

The more I think about it, the more a short day trip out of the
Snohomish / Everett area makes sense, considering fuel costs, and
other logistics...

Pilchuck has two accessible sides, the ski resort is the longer drive
but offers more room and a better view, also a couple hour hike to
the top, which I haven't done yet... We could meet up in Snohomish,
take some pictures, caravan up through Granite Falls and up to the
top of Pilchuck, have a picnic/barbq up top, more pictures and then
folks could take off and explore on their own or hike up the
mountain.

The Big Four Ice Caves are further up the road, 15 to 20 miles or so,
nice picnic/parking area there, not much view, high elevation, will
be cold, and if cloudy, you'll be in the clouds..

The west side of pilchuck is about 20 miles from my house, easily
accessible year round, although not quite as scenic.

There is also Spada Lake...

....the thought process continues...

Joe,

I think we're on the same wavelength... This will be a gathering
for pictures, to meet others, check out the vehicles, maybe picnic,
bbq or eat at the same restuarant, maybe check out a trail or a
scenic spot, and then disperse. No camping as a group, although
folks my team up and camp.

My family isn't into the herd mentality either. Not trying to
organize a jeep jamboree. This is just a way of meeting all the nice
folks on the List, take some photos, look at each others rigs, answer
questions, make new friends and hang out for a little bit.

For those reasons I think we need to keep whatever activity pretty
close to Snohomish/ Everett... The last one was fun, but mostly we
met, and then dispersed.

I think you'll be quite comfortable with the idea.

Remember, primary objective: PHOTOS of us together. And MEET
others. the other stuff is secondary and expected to be fun.
Nothing other than the group photos is mandatory. There's lots to do
here for everyone. Snohomish is renowned for it's antiques and
there are lots of nice forest service roads in the foothills...

The sponsorship thing is a crazy idea that might not pan out, or
provide us with food for the meeting...

Hey, no minutes, no schedule, etc... :-) Hope I didn't scare
anyone... :-)

The Wag doesn't have an engine. It used to have a 350. The same yard
does have a 63 Rambler Classic wagon with a 4 bbl. 327 that must have
been rebuilt at some point as it is in incredible condition. I am
buying it for $225 complete with all accessories, brackets, etc. and I
will build the engine and keep the accessories as spares.

He would take $275 for the whole car ( drive it home ) but I am out of
space for vehicles.

Try your local yards but don't look for a Jeep, ask for a Rambler. The
327 4bbl. was the performance engine in Ramblers until 65 or 66

Subject: question for doc...

doc,

you asked a question about water getting around the foam on an amsoil
air filter...

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ONE?????

K&N's typically have a hard rubber seal, very much like a stock paper
element. The Amsoil filters have a metal cage that the foam wraps
around, and on some models they have another layer of denser foam on
the top and bottom... The planar type filters can be a bear to get
into the box because of the extra material used to seal them...

Whenever I'm stuck with buying a K&N because I've got an oddball
vehicle, I have to pay 3 times as much to get a lesser filter... so
what I do is wrap the Amsoil filter material AROUND the K&N so I get
adequate protection... Even a paper element will usually keep water
from going through it, so long as you don't leave it under too
long...

I don't own a vehicle that I'd take in water that deep, all of them
have electric winders and such... I do know that if I did screw up
in a major way that my engine would be fine... even though my
interior wouldn't be... :-)

Finally found a Chevy 350 (4 bolt), that is supposed to be running.
This is to go into an M715. If work goes OK in the AM, I'll dissappear
for a couple of hours after lunch Tuesday to check it out.

Its in a '75 Chevy van. 4 Barrel, HEI. Odometer shows 75,000. The yard
guy (I sorta know him) says it used to belong to his cousin, and that
that milage is about right (yeah, sure) I know it should probably be
(1)75,000, but judging by the lack of wear and tear on the upholstery,
etc, pedal pads, etc, this may be right.

If it runs good enough, I want to get it, put it in the 715, and
then maybe rebuild it in 2 - 4 years.

a) Whats a good price range for this motor?

b) More important, what should I check when I crank it?
I figure the obvious, smoke, etc. What else? Compression?

thanks, DP...

Hey guys, got a simple question:

What is a full floating axle?

Subject: Re: Question on AXLES

if the wheel bearing for the axles is mounted TO the
axle, it is called a semi-float axle. which is the type found in
ALL of the wags and cheros. if the axle does not have a wheel
bearing pressed onto it, then it is called a full floating
axle. so instead of the axle suporting the weight of the vehicle,
the axle only has to contend with turning the hub. the hub,
which is VERY similar to the front hub/rotor on the front
of r wags/cheros, is responsible for the mounting of the wheel
and the brake components. thereby releasing the axle soley
float free within the axle tube.

just like the front hub/rotor arrangment, the rear hub has
a spindle too. but this spindle is most likley pressed/welded
into the end of the axle tube, instead of being held
onto it by 6 bolts, as in the case of the front axles
on r wags/chero.

the d60 is a full float design and is very tuff to break. it can
increase the amount of weight that can be carried
by the vehicle, becasue the HUB not the AXLE is supporting the weight
of the vehicle. the hub rides on the spindle and the spindle is
attatched to the axle tube, so there is a direct
line from the wheel to the frame avoiding the axle completly.
the axle just floats inside of the diff tubes.

FWIW,
The d60 also comes as a semi-floater (d60-2). It's the axle put under the
earlier heavy 1/2 ton j-trucks. My 73 j-4000 has one. 5-5 1/2 wheel bolt
pattern rather than the 8.

John, (Guys and Gals feel free to jump in) A full floating axle has
splines on both ends. I engages the differential and the "flange".

This is desirable because the wheel will not separate from axle in the
event of axle breakage. The flange holds the wheel via the lugs and
brake drum and is supported to the axle housing (tube) via bearings.

On "flanged shaft" axles, the flange and axle shaft are one piece! If
the axle breaks the hole Shooti'n match comes off!!! You may have
witnessed this on some poor guys rig stuck on the side of the road.
tire, wheel and axle sticking way out the side of the truck!

"Full Float" is the term that describes the axle shaft... it floats in
the axle housing. An added benefit is the ability too change the axle
without removing the wheel, or jacking the truck up!. Also one could
drive home with a broken axle. Lock the front remove the rear drive
shaft and away you go!

Dana 60's are expensive. They came standard on the 3/4 ton version
trucks. (like mine :) ) They are tuff and can take the abuse of heavy
hauling.

I hope this sheds some light on the subject and please gang... chime in
with more info . I'm always willing to learn.
