thanx for the comments...

you ask the perennial FSJ question... :-) I am considering the same
issues with Old Blue.

The best ideas relate to exhaust and intake/carb setup. A fuel
injection setup would help the most, but you're looking at around a
grand or more....

Freeflowing exhaust, the right gearing setup, synthetic oil, a Jacobs
ignition, a decent carb, etc. will all help.

Old Blue got as high as 14mpg when I was running synthetic oil. I
got 12mpg at 75mpg towing a 1,000 lb trailer with about 600 lbs of
engine and tranny in it... running dino oil right now...

I'm involved with too many projects right now of the Home and Garden
and computer type to spend money on Old Blue... But the next step
will probably be an Edelbrock performer manifold and a small 4 bbl
carb...

In the meantime I drive my 88xj... and wish I was driving my FSJ!!!

john

Landen,

I had an 85 xj with this 2.1 all aluminum, wet sleeved turbo
diesel... parts are expensive, labor, if you can find qualified
labor, is worse. It's a Renault engine, they are still placed in
XJ's in Europe. My cost (jobber pricing) on a Sleeve kit ONLY, was
$800 three years ago. I believe all the gaskets, rings, sleeves,
etc. were around $1,400...

I ran across a motor and AT for one almost 10 years ago and like a
fool didn't buy them... They are scarcer than hen's teeth...

My heart goes out to your friend. They are wonderful rigs when
running, I got 26mpg with mine in town and 32 mpg on the highway.

If I had kept the rig I would have probably converted it to a
different engine and tranny setup, maybe a 5.7L Diesel,
(Targetmaster) with a TH350 or TH400. Lots of effort to do that
though.

I wouldn't mind having another one of these xj td's for commuting and
family. I'm kinda bummed that I got rid of mine. The guy that
bought it spent a fortune on it and sold it at a great loss...

I had trouble with the alternator setup, and the bracketry, etc...

Whereabouts are you Landen?

Your friend might be better off placing a 2.5L 4 cylinder in the same
hole, although to convert a Diesel rig to non-Diesel is a TRAGEDY...

I'd think he's looking at a $1,500 to $2,000 repair job if he's
lucky... If you can find someone to do if for less, well then the
Lord has provided...

The parts are the killer. This is the same problem that the Volvo's
with the Maserati V-6's faced... those rascals were also wet-sleeved
and with dual over head cams...

Let me know how your friend is faring. If he decides to sell, I'd be
interested in buying it. I would probably attempt to fix the little
Diesel myself or find a suitable replacement for it...

Best wishes for a quick and inexpensive repair for your friends
Diesel...

wow, tan and everything... is this a stock console? mounts under
the dash and goes between the seats???? Yes, I'm interested.

You're up in Canada somewhere right? What year is your rig?

Once I get a mental, or real picture, or idea of what this is, you
betcha I'll take it for shipping costs... Right now I've got the
stock leather armrest dealy bob and then an assortment of odds and
ends for coffee cups and tapes. Would you believe it if I told you
that I have a console from a Fiat in Old blue?? it's small of
course, and then behind that one of those single cup holder things
with a place for tapes or cds...

Let me also find out what Bill's is going for, since he'll be coming
over on the 5th of July... It may actually be cheaper to buy one
than to ship yours... I'll also know what to do when I find out
what year yours is...

This is cool stuff... I'm getting Old Blue setup pretty well with
stock items... very nice, thanx all... I know in the last two
years that parts have been going back and forth across the country...
Someone mailed me a carb that I then mailed or gave to someone
else... :-) Michael sent me the plumbing for my auxillary tank, that
would have gone in this weekend had the warden not assigned me to
rock duty... Yep, I was hauling one man rocks and gravel in my little
datsun pickup trailer behind the little wagoneer - I'm saving Old
Blue for this weekend, the men's retreat with our church... Gotta
bring my FSJ to a meeting of the testesterone... (did I spell that
right???) Besides, Becky will probably won't the little wag so she
and my daughter have wheels while Mark and I are gone...

long winded answer... sorry,
john

obviously my UNIX boxes are humming along quite nicely though, out of
something like 50 of 'em, none provided any problems all weekend, my
cell phone and pager have been quiet all weekend, yah!

Disappointing, it's always fun to promote the arguement that defeats
your own when it's all in total silliness... :-) If you pull it off
properly no one remembers which side you were on, unless of course
they can read... :-)

See, that's what it is, the friction fighting saliva factor...
Seriously, your rig is very nice, your engine felt like a good match,
and I definetly envy your fuel economy... Old blue must have a carb
problem... Your rig might be lighter than Old Blue too... I'd say
maybe 500 lbs lighter, in part because of two less doors and probably
because I've got heavier junk in Old Blue... :-)

I was afraid you were gonna ask for their names... :-) If this
wasn't a family list and all, I might have slipped into some less
than wholesome kidding... :-) It was an expensive camera, that's
what really irritates me about those shots. Especially when I had
just spent money having it all redone by the factory... The Contax
MT167 bodies retail for close to $600, I paid $400 used about 4 years
ago. I traded it for another Contax, a 139 Quartz (kind of one
"grade" below the 167, but one notch up from the Contax RTS we sold a
few years ago) and a Yashica FRII, a definetly inexpensive camera
that I carry with me all the time... It does ok. I may save some
bucks and trade it in for another 139... We're kinda settled into
the yashica/Contax thing because of the Carl Zeiss lenses... You
want to see some beautiful glass, pick up a Zeiss lense.... but be
careful, they are very, very spendy... The only reason we have them
is we bought them in Europe at the PX, two winning combinations for a
Zeiss lense... The 135mmF2 lens that we bought in 1979 is still
worth over twice what we paid for it back then... And it still
takes incredible pictures... I keep the Tokina 28 to 210 zoom on my
camera all the time, it's a decent lens, but definetly not a Zeiss...

I wish I still had my first SLR, a Canon FTb black body... that was
a great camera...

oh well...

Yep, Bill is on the dry side of the state... He's in the APPLE
Valley of Washington... Wenatchee... also very close to a little
town called Leavenworth that pretends to be a German town, they do
have some good Schnitzels over there... We make it over there at

I'm starting to go into Schnitzel withdrawal... maybe we'll make it

I'll talk to the guys at Olympic, let them know that about a dozen
half-crazed FSJ types will be in town, I'll see if they won't stay
open for us... They were closed this weekend...

Old Blue has about three different light colored/tan/beigh/almond
colors inside... perhaps some nutmeg even... so if it's in the
beighe / tan range, we'll be ok, otherwise Gord has one.

However, they can be painted or covered with little effort, so let's
see how much. IT might be ok to get both, since snohomish seems to
be a gathering place for FSJ's... :-) I could always pass on
whatever's left over for whatever I end up putting into it...

I'll give Olympic a call tomorrow and see if they'll be open. If so,
then we should make that part of the FSJ day events.. :-)

I am strongly leaning towards coming for the Gala event,

I usually obtain a temporary day permit, but I don't know if
these are " legal " in Wash. state as valid insurance.
Will have to check this out and get back to the list.

Just a note here... Every fsj (or AMC for that matter) that I've taken the
ignition switch out of has had some die cast "flash" covering the small slot
where you must push the tab to remove the lock. If you've never done one
before, your totally lost because there's no slot where the book says there
is. The fix is to take that very small screwdriver & "punch" thru the flash
in order to get to the tab.

Just offering,

I'm not sure that an AMC 360 had a valley pan as such. The intake
'Gasket' is a large metal pan type thing that covers the area between
the heads and below the intake. At least this was the case with my '82.

Sorry, we're on different wavelengths. I thought you meant the thing
between the front seats. Doesn't mount under the dash in any way. Just
sits between the seats with an arm rest that will flip up or down.

I looked at the box my current one came in and it is a Steelhorse unit.
Non-locking (not the one advertised for CJ's) but with lots of room and
just the right height for my arm. Color is even close.
Fit perfectly where the stock unit was.

Not necessarily true. My first SLR was the venerable Pentax K1000. A
magnificent camera. Some of the best pictures I have ever taken were with
that fully manual beast. I then "upgraded" to a do-everything Minolta
Maxxum 7xi. Also a nice camera but I found I was constantly distracted by
all the options. And that autofocus- I just didn't care for it. I then
retro'ed to a Nikon FE. I got it used from "KEH Camera Brokers" in Atlanta
(www.keh.com) in excellent condition. It takes great pictures and has just
the right amount of viewfinder information (aperture and shutter speed) and
just the right amount of automation (aperture priority or manual).
However, occasionally, the damn shutter hangs open. I'll depress the
shutter release and hear the open click and it'll just stay open! I'll
have to move the shutter speed dial to Bulb to get it closed. Anybody know
of a good Camera Repair shop?

When you want to take the drum off of a full-floater, you first have to take off
about 8 bolts that hold the axle flange to the drum. Then you take off a big
nut that holds the drum on the shaft, then proceed to slide the drum off. The 2
bearings are inside the drum and all the weight rides on those 2 bearings. And
since the VERY end of the axle shaft is bolted on the outside of the drum, if
the axle snaps nothing else will happen...

I have a D60 full floater, 30 splines...and is one thick bar of steel.

referring to the brakes.
Take off the wheel, then slide the drum off. If you break your axle shaft, your
wheel will fly off, and a part of the axle shaft.

> Why do folks get excited about Dana 60's???

Heaviest duty axle, "Bullet-proof"
(But, Dana made a D70 AXLE!)

Willys, but the guy said it is a Jeep J-30 or 300. He said it looks

rust. He wants $150 for all or ? for parts.

Subject: oil

Is it possible that oil can leak from the cylinder head?

After re-sealing the oil pan this seems to be the only likely place that oil can
be leaking from.
And when I searched the engine, this was confirmed with black goo at the end of
my fingers.

I did fix my transmission problem, the vacuum modulator was bad. After going
through about 7 sources I finally found a replacement part. Since the original
had a ridge on the inside of it this made my search more difficult, when you
need to replace your modulator, (TH-400), make sure to note whether it had a lip
on the inside or not. I went to Carquest and found one, it is made by ATP and
the part-no. is JX-66, this is much smaller than the original but, it works.
The cost was around $17. Also, a side note is when you do change this thing
out, DO NOT take off the elbow thing that is connected to the transmission, if
you take this out, about 2 quarts of ATF fluid will be in your face.
Now I have very-unnoticeable shifts.....2nd is around 15, 3rd is around 25mph.
and these are adjustable via. a small screw at the end of the modulator.
