John & Doc, I've got a question for you two guys. I've never seen a
comparison of air flow for these 2 filters. In my oft quoted
"Performance with Economy" book, they show a comparison of various
filter's air flow numbers (CFM at a given pressure differential). They
even show that a DIRTY K&N flows better than most CLEAN paper elements.
It also shows that the most restrictive type of element is made from
foam. From what I understand, isn't the AMSOIL filter foam? Have you
guys ever seen a comparison of flows for these two? Without hard data
like this I would have a hard time using a foam element filter knowing
that it's restrictive. Just curious really, when I finally purchase my
much lusted after MPI kit, it will come with a neat little K&N filter in
the kit. ;-)

I had a pretty bad leak around my harmonic balancer. It seems that
170,000 miles had worn a groove in the shaft were it came through
the timing chain cover. The seal that wraps around the harmonic
balancer shaft hardens up over time and can burn a groove in it.
Mine would'nt leak at idle but gushed out at highway speeds. It
sprayed all over the place so it was hard to tell where it was coming
from, I thought it was the pan also. After I rebuilt the engine
it was still leaking out even with new
seal on it (much to my dismay, I figured I was through with oil leaks!).
I pulled the balancer off and took it to a machine shop, had them
turn it and press a sleeve on it, presto no more leak and only ten bucks!
If your cylinder head was leaking I'd think you have some
other serious problems such as water in your oil or vice versa.
Hope this helps.

Mike you have to look at it this way..I already have a DODGE 208...Thats
what I want.It has a pass. side out put for the front,And it doesnt run a
slip yoke like a crappy GM...
I can run a bolt up type front and rear driveshaft.I already have a Dodge
727 with all the stuff I need so all I have to do is get a AMC 727 and
switch it over.Im just trying to deal with what I already have...plus Im
selling the 400 and 20 setup to a friend when I do the switch.

Well pretty close....This guy is a grave digger around town.He hauls a 52ft
trailer with a large back hoe and other equipment. Its really pushing the
limits on a 1 ton pickup.I have turned the pump up on it alot and cut the
muffler off for him and it pulls like no other.Well he smoked the gears
coming in the other day and kept driving it.The gear oil was sick...Like
tar....Smelled awful(I HATE GEAROIL).....Thats one D80 thats toast.....
Oh well its all fixed now and running a syn.lubricant now.You have never
seen axles like this in a pickup before I promise.

My old manual X3 Yashica has earned the "timex" nickname. Used to strap in
on when dirt biking to get great shots of crash & burns! Had to go to
camera swap meets to find lenses for it but after I got them, have been
using & abusing ever since.

Zack, I think this is a great idea and Doc's idea of putting it on the web
is good too. You could still make this a kindof business op for yourself
maybe by charging "subscription" fee for access to a search engine for the
combined manual. like a few dollars for a year's worth of access.

From: Chrisharon-at-aol.com
Subject: Tilt column fix (Revision 1)

Tilt column fix revision 1 (May 27, 1997)

This is what I did to fix a loose steering column (at the pivot point for
the tilt) on a '78 Cherokee. Hopefully this will be of help to others with
the same problem.
Special equipment required: Universal puller set (this is what I used) or
                                            perhaps a regular steering wheel
puller.

1) Disconnect battery
2) Remove horn button
3) Remove large nut and washer on steering shaft.
4) Remove the 3 screws in plastic insulator for horn button. Remove as
an assembly: plastic insulator, metal dish, and metal plate.
5) Scribe an alignment mark from steering shaft to steering wheel so
you can reassemble with the wheel in the correct orientation.
6) Use steering wheel puller and remove steering wheel.
7) Remove plastic anti-theft plate.
8) Install steering wheel puller over steering shaft, (be careful not to
crush the plastic cancelling cam (it's also where the horn circuit
comes through) and tighten shaft nut and washer (that you already
    took off) over puller.
9) Use two bolts and nuts and install with bolt through puller, with nut
on the bottom so you can use the bolts to push on (compress) the
    steering lock plate.
10) Remove clip from steering shaft. NOTE: My Jeep technical service
manual sais NOT to re-use this clip. I've had mine out twice and
have re-usedit both times, the decision is yours.
11) Decompress lock plate.
12) Remove steering nut, washer, and steering wheel puller.
13) Remove lock plate.
14) Remove cancelling cam, and spring.
15) Remove 4 bolts securing support brace to steering column under dash.
16) Remove 2 bolts securing support to dashboard.
17) Remove column support brace.
18) Disconnect wiring coming from under the column, remove plug
from it's holder and leave hanging.
19) Remove screw holding turn signal switch handle to switch assembly.
20) Remove 3 screws holding turn signal switch (you'll have to turn
the switch to get to all 3 screws).
21) Remove turn signal switch, you should be able to feed the wired
up through the column to give you enough slack to do this. You
can get a little more slack by lifting the plastic cover (under the
      column) over the wires.
22) Put key in ignition lock. Turn to locked position. You should be able
to see a small bar coming out of the end of the lock. Just to the
right of that is a small slot, inert a small screwdriver into the slot
and
      push. Remove key lock assembly.
           NOTE by Mike Saltsgaver:
Every fsj (or AMC for that matter) that I've taken the ignition switch
out of has had some die cast "flash" covering the small slot where you
must push the tab to remove the lock. If you've never done one before,
your totally lost because there's no slot where the book says there is.
The fix is to take that very small screwdriver & "punch" thru the flash
in
order to get to the tab.
23) Use a pair of long nose pliers, and remove spring clips from shift
indicator on top of steering column.
29) Remove shift indicator.
30) Remove 2 screws on top of column, shift indicator light, and metal cover.
31) Remove tilt handle.
32) Remove upper column housing (Painted housing where ignition key goes).
33) Reinstall tilt handle.
34) Tilt steering wheel in full up position.
35) Their's a round metal piece towards the bottom with a square hole in it.
Using a screwdriver, push in and turn about 1/4 turn until
      this piece comes out.
36) If it didn't come out with the metal cup in the above step,
     remove spring.
37) Using a puller tool (I made my own) remove pivot pins.
     This is what I did:
Get a 1/2" open end wrench, the screw that came out of the
turn signal handle, a washer & a nut that will fit the screw.
Install nut onto screw until it bottoms out, and install washer
against it. Put the 1/2" wrench over the pivot pin (make sure the
pin will go through the wrench ends when it's pulled or you'll
strip
something out). Install the screw into the pin, and tighten the
nut
until the pin is loose. This is what *I* did, something else may
          work better for you.
38) Hold the housing on the column, pull on the title handle, and remove
     the housing.

That's all the disassembly their is. Their should be 4 loose bolts after
that. They're not regular bolts, they look almost like a torque bit. I used
a 12pt 1/4" drive socket (don't remember what size). Remove one bolt at
a time, clean it, apply locktight, and reinstall. Then reverse the
disassembly instructions and you're finished. The pivot pins just press back
in, not a problem.
Hopefully I didn't leave out too many steps. If anybody uses this info,
please let me know how accurate or helpful this was, and feel free to add to
this, I just went by memory here. I don't know what all years will be
exactly the same. This how-to could also be used for lock replacement,
just stop after step 22.

Chris Enos ('78 Cherokee (widetrack), TH-400, Q-Track 16% OD P/T, 3.55, 33")

The revisions from the original copy are as fallows:
NOTE by Mike Saltsgaver (In step 22).
The fact that I realized that step 22 is mandantory.

hope it will be... If nothing else, bring a picture of Ol'White and
a placard that says insert FSJ here. You'll just have to stand in
front of whatever wheels bring you here. Brad is in similar straits
with his 82. I'd rather have you guys show up on a reliable vehicle
and just take pictures of that rig amongst the others with the
"INSERT FSJ HERE" signs... :-) I'd be hard pressed to justify
10mpg on a trip down to reno when I have a jeep in the drive that
gets close to 20 mpg...

so if insurance, transmission or fuel prohibit the luxury of bringing
your beloved FSJ's, don't sweat it. Just be sure to bring a picture.

I'm sure you'd do the same for me. In fact, I know everyone on the
list will do it for others because it's being done all the time...
Just look at the copies being made, faxes being sent, parts being
mailed for postage, or for nothing...

there's two of 'em up there off of FSJ-feats.html... I just saw
them... one file is called eddie.trip.html the other is
wake.zone.html or something like that... :-) They're there, just
checked... (Perhaps I'm being too "creative" with the titles when
the guy that wrote the article can't find them... :-)

(oh, not sure what the rubicon thing is in the path... don' t hard
code that in... it's just during the transition in servers...
should be http://www.off-road.com... )

I'll post my son near my little wagoneer, instructions: guard the
FSJ decal... :-) You know we're white belts in Tae Kwon Do now...
:-)
