Ponds are bone dry (tho nuthin compared to north Texas right now), trees are dyin all over, not to mention all those expensively kept sodded lawns... Thank goodness for 6 acres of crabgrass!! Landon Tesar wrote: Hi, Thanks for all your help. I compared the old carb I got from the junkyard - mid '80s? to the one on my '89. The older one does not have the vacuum fitting down in front, supporting what Kim said about the vacuum source being internal. I checked for vacuum at the fitting in front of the carb and didn't find any at idle.(could change based on throttle position) I put a tee in the vacuum line leading up from the manifold to the vacuum canister(bulb) on the firewall, and ran vacuum line to the fitting in the front of the carb. Of course if the bulb is a vacuum reservoir, it won't theoretically drop vacuum quickly, but we'll worry about that later. The truck is running great this morning, will let you know how the gas mileage works out. The brown smoke may just mean that I've toasted the rings. Will do a compression test. - - Landon ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10 EFax:603-215-1688 http://homepages.go.com/~carnuck/carnuck.html ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Sep 2000 18:02:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: fsj: FWD: '89 GW parts in WI >From the XJ list From: Jeff Well, I just returned from Duluth MN where I picked up a FREE '89 Grand Wagoneer (not counting the $50 in gas, $30 in truck rental fee, $10 trailer borrow donation, and $10 seat belt violation fee [which was better than the 67 in a 55 ticket he could have given me {hey, I was gaining momentum to get up a steep hill with a doggy truck!}]). The Jeep was listed in the paper for $500 or offer and said it had fire damage. Well, I found the owners wife who said she didn't get any calls on it so she had called the wreckers to come get it. They didn't get it yet, so she cancelled with them and let me return the next day to get it. The inside and engine compartment is trashed with fire, but the axles/frame/bumpers/gas tank/transfer case/ tranny/ tires/ rims are all CHERRY! I mean there is still paint on the rear end! Supposedly it had around 60K on it. The bottom of the body hardly has any rust. If anyone is interested in parts from this, I am in Northern WI and need to get back some of my costs! Amazingly, while at Burger King in Duluth, a guy was poking around the wreck and said he was a collector and might like to purchase some of the parts, so perhaps I already have a buyer for some of it. The axles are mine as is the steering stuff. Actually, I will probably only use the axle shafts and from the knuckles out from the front end including the wheels unless I get offered enough cash for the good shape factory aluminum wheels. It has a custom spring over giving it 7 inches of lift. It has 33 x 12.5 inch mudders. It also has custom dual 3 inch exaust with dual glasspack mufflers exiting under the rear doors. Soooo... Mark wants to buy my 77 Wagoneer... Might not be a bad idea, if it's not too much of a project. It does have dual tanks. :) It's a lot nicer than his pickup... safer too, disc brakes and so on... :) Anyway, tomorrow we park the J3000 up on the highway and hope to find it a nice home. :) Otherwise he'll have to start spending some serious money on it... (tires, exhaust, brakes, bearings, and so on and so on... ;) Superdawg is running really good. Took it to look at the 86 Wag... I forgot to call Benz Springs today to get a quote on custom springs... Biggest question is if I go to a pick and pull and locate a late model Grand Wagoneer, what are the chances of the radiator replacement being a bolt-in? By that I mean are the brackets that would mount the new radiator a direct match to what's in my truck. If not, what, if any (drilling new holes, remounting brackets, etc.) would have to be done? I want to minimize any welding of brackets or things like that. The easiest way to phase this question is has anyone with a Kaiser-era FSJ, 70 or earlier, updated their original radiator with something from an AMC or Chrysler vintage FSJ? If so, what are some of the issues that I need to address before start or what, if any, obstacles have any of you encountered in similar cooling system upgrades? My goal is to make it that when I take my Super Wagoneer up to Death Valley on spy photo expeditions that overheating will be the last thing that I worry about. On a second note, directed to SoCal and SoNevada members of the national FSJ list and the FSJ Digest, is anyone interested in a trail ride next Saturday or Sunday to Monache Meadows, the North fork of the Kern River? I've been told that there's an old fishing/hunting lodge up there, dating back to the forties along with an old air strip. According to one of my books, Aircraft Wrecks in the Mountains and Deserts of California, there are several aircraft wrecks in the vicinity. I'd like to make a stab at locating at least one and would submit a photo essay of the trip to both JP Magazine and 4 Wheel and Off Toad, Rick Pewe's new title (he will be leaving JP after the November issue). From what I've been told previously it would be an all-day trip and I'd love to get together a group of LA area Jeep enthusiasts to make the run. I'm sure there are some people on the list that are familiar with this area and hopefully will join the trip and serve as the guide. Any takers? I'll repost this as a separate message, hopefully I'll get some feedback by Tuesday. I'm thinking that a group from LA-Orange County can meet for breakfast at that big truck stop and Wendy's at the intersection of I-15 and US 395, and then head north no later than 8AM. For anyone who lives further north along 395, we can set up some places to meet as the original group heads north. Could be a fun day to take our Jeep south before the weather starts to get marginal at the higher elevations. Unfortunately I'll be heading to Paris to cover the Auto Show so the next chance I'll have to do this will be the weekend of October 7.
