Until The Next Dimension, The Admiral ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Oct 2000 11:42:33 EDT From: Brazzadog-at-aol.com Subject: fsj: 4350 update Well, I tore apart my $75 reman'd by Holley 4350 again yesterday. Remember that when I first put this carb into service, I had to spend 3 days bending and adjusting linkages until I had everything working correctly together. Neither the instructions in a rebuild kit nor the TSM are really adequate with regard to understanding all the mechanical interrelationships. Yesterday I discovered that the #197 primary jet bore size referred to in the manual is actually 1.97 mm and in no way relates to Holley jet sizes that seem to be based on wire gauge. The markings on the current jets indicate jets sized in about the 2.3 mm range. I also discovered that Holley jets don't fit and there is apparently no source for Motorcraft jets. This carb is still running rich and there seems to be no cure since I can't find jets and/or metering rods. Also the accelerator pump lever shaft is seeping enough fuel to leave a black gunky puddle on the intake. If that wasn't enough, the secondary throttle shaft seems to be doing the same. Oh yeah, and the base plate to body gasket is seeping fuel cause the PO or Holley stripped out the threads that hold one of the screws. Unfortunately the thing runs great so I kinda hate to ditch it. That's probably why I've kept fooling with it so long. So, I've got this Holley 4v with vacum secondaries that a guy gave me when I bought his Bronco. I guess I looked like a gear head. It has "The Carb Shop" stickers all over it. (I'm nervous, that 4350 looked new and had Holley stickers all over it) He took it off a '66 Mustang he was restoring 10 years ago. He said it would be just right on the 351M in my pickup so I'm figuring it'll do fine on the 360 in the Wag. It has the same bolt pattern as the 4350 so all it needs is an adapter to fit on the "stock" intake manifold. I've never worked on a Holley. It's got #s stamped all over it but I'm hoping some of them will help me identify it. The current plan is to get a book on Holleys, rebuild the thing, make a 1" phenolic adapter, and see what happens. If it flops then I'm ready to bolt on an Edelbrock or Carter AFB. Or, as with all Chiefs, there may have been major rust w/i the flares themselves and a previous owner just removed the flares all together. There is a little hint that this vehicle has been subject to rust... Nonetheless, this is a somewhat rare vehicle...I too have never seen a Tonka Cherokee. Good score... Greg Yahoo!
