This is (I > hope) a budget project. This spring I put new exhaust on my '71 Wagoneer. I had to replace one exhaust manifold because it was of a different design. Apparently it was from an AMC car and was referred to as "log" design by the local Jeep guru. It collected all the exhaust ports into one runner rather than having 2 runners come together to make a Y just before the outlet. Apparently they don't flow as well and it had a smaller outlet diameter than the Y-type manifold on the other side. I think any FSJ manifolds after '74 will be of the better design and maybe even stock '71 FSJ 360 manifolds were too. The local wrecking yard wanted $30 for a pair of exhaust manifolds, but I only wanted one. I got one free off the Jeep guru's pile cause I'm a good customer. If your air injection system is dead then you want 9/16" fine thread bolts to plug the holes in the exhaust manifolds. I cut them off so they were about 1/8" proud once they were seated. I cut a screwdriver slot in the end to put them in and take them out someday if I want to. I also dabbed a little exhaust system sealant goop on the threads to guard against leaks. It looks alot better than haveing big 'ol too long bolts sticking out of the manifolds. I bought a complete stock replacement (for a '78 Wagoneer) 2.5" Walker exhaust from Napa. The Dynomax HD Super Turbo muffler was also a Napa stock replacment item. The whole system went together fairly easily, just the way I wanted it (cause I did it myself), and was reasonably priced. Now, I wonder if John will take the "muffler debate" bait? I've had 4 occassions in the last 6 mos. where the tailgate window wouldn't go up or down from either switch. 3 of them while I was deer hunting earlier this month. That's the 1st time I've had to open either of them up in 4 years plus and I felt like it was time to clean-out the crud and lube everything anyway. The prognosis: The safety switch has become flaky. The permanent fix: The local dealer has 3 of them in stock. Two of them with my name on them now. The temporary fix is I bypassed the switch for now. The discovery: I needed to inspect the infamous paddle switch. I wasn't sure how I was going to achieve that with minimal disassembly. I had visions of bright lights and mirrors to somehow see the switch behind the regulator. I took the key cover and lock cylinder housing off to get more light into the area. I got to looking around with a flashlight through the hole. Behold, there was the paddle. Remove the cover and the housing, shine a flash light to the left side of the hole, stick a screw driver in the linkage rod's square hole on the bracket, twist the screw driver to operate the switch and you can tell whether or not the paddle is cocked to one side or not. When the paddle switch dies, it's almost always because one of the teats breaks off the paddle; the paddle is no longer square in the switch case and the carbon contacts become intermittent or can no longer make contact. This tip applies to '79s & up. And to think I could have checked the paddle switch w/o opening it all up. Well, I did lubricate everything, vacuum the thing out (there was nothing in there to speak of this time...surprised me) and make sure the drains are open.
