That's the best mileage I've ever gotten on the '88 GWag, and I think the only time I've gotten over 13mpg since switching carbs (to another 2150; just runs smoother than the old one). I only got a bit over 12mpg on the way back yesterday, which is about standard on the highway with this carb. (I used to get a consistent 13.5 on the highway with the old, flakier carb.) I was driving around 75-80mph most of the time (as was most other traffic -- common on I-80 on that stretch despite the 65mph limit. I didn't notice a significant tailwind, but maybe there was a bit. I probably just hit everything right. And as usual, I didn't use the cruise control (my foot tends to get better mileage than cruise control, even on new cars -- I got around 2mpg better than the cruise on my mom's late-90s Chrysler LHS according to its own computer). And I ordered all the fuel injection parts; I already got the intake manifold. So hopefully within a few weeks, I'll be getting even better mileage all the time. (I'll be disappointed if I don't get at least 15mpg on the highway and 13mpg in town. And I'm hoping for even a bit higher. But we'll see.) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At dinner yesterday, I tried to cut myself a slice of prime rib, but it was only divisible by itself and one. -- Chris Lipe - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 May 2001 14:02:27 CDT From: Dan Black Subject: Re: fsj: transfer case questions Carnuck2-at-webtv.net (jim blair) said: {- A: I would have the later chain and gear set put in the NP231, or get a {- NP242 if you aren't going to run the NP208 (which is the strongest of {- them all). And you're right, if they do squawk about the few things I did swap for stock, like the bumper, I'll bill 'em for the storage fees. ;) Good point mike. :) besides, the valuation they placed on the accessories was ludicrous... $50 for my "fog lights"!!! try an order of magnitude more and you might be able to replace all those lights!!!! so I'm at risk for $50 worth of lights... ;) They called the bumper a brush guard, it was less than $100. So I doubt they'll be bothering me anyway... wife wouldn't let me buy it back... and I couldn't see spending $1,045 for the driveline, not when I can run up to BC and buy the same driveline with a lot fewer miles for fifty cents on the dollar (US that is. ;) besides, the lw engine had developed blowby and was starting to use some oil... the '87 with 267k on it uses less oil and has no blowby! No one seemed interested in the 4.10's and TADs to even make an offer... guess we all are looking for cheap parts... ;) I told them that I'd spent most of the day saturday putting it back together... I also let the gal know that the catalytic converter had been rattled apart from the accident too... so the fact that the exhaust system is gone was a good thing. ;) I doubt she'll remember all the details I rattled off. But if they complain about anything I'll point out what's underneath that thing. Lucky for me my wife doesn't want me to "mess up" her new jeep, no lift, no big tires, no loud exhaust, no lockers... so all that stuff isn't going to be missed (by her). ;) I'm tired of spending weekends modifying and working... a stock xj will take me to most of the places I want to go... so will my updated J10... and of course when the panel is done that'll be my "e-ticket" ride. ;) My wife wants the front bumper from the lw, and I want to get some decent nerf bars again. They really helped in the crash. Let me know if you see any nice newer low mileage clean XJ's around the seattle area for under $9k or so... While I was severely tempted to swap out the tranny and xfr case, I didn't... I was tempted to pull the 4.10's and TADs... but I didn't... I was tempted to pull the OME lift, but I didn't... At some point in time it's just not worth the time... I think that's why I'm cleaning out all my jeep parts, the stuff that is shippable and saleable is going up on ebay, the rest is in the "Free pile" until mid-june, then whatever is left goes away to the scrapper... I had stuff to put back in and no one would have been the wiser... but I didn't... and I feel great about it... I'm going to continue purging... with my J10 project in the capable hands of a good friend and the Panel project coming after that for my "toy", I'm just passing all this collection along... I've been saving stuff for years in anticipation of doing a major conversion of one sort or another. Now that it's defined I can purge, or move the stuff that might be used down to the Panel and then flush it out when that's done. :) I'm trying to cure my packratitis! Help me before I scrounge some more... I think I'm going to get rid of my HP workstation now and after I finish the FSJ book, the Ultra10 clone... maybe... Actually... I digress, but I should give my pc to my wife for ebay surfing and just use my Sun workstation with star office! ;) Hey, I've got 2 or 3 20" monitors for sale too... shipping is very hard, and uPs usually breaks them... :( the HP is shippable, 715/100 over 200 meg of ram, two internal SCSI's, tape unit... dual boot, 10.20 and 11.0. :) or is it just 11.0... gotta run, get some work done and get home to do more throwing out... ;) it feels so good... excited about getting a nice clean newer low mileage XJ as the main vehicle and the J10 with an xj driveline... bye bye benz... :) BTW, the "cheap jeep" has a hitch, new tailgate struts, and soon to have "new" mirrors. I think the total jumps up a bit to about $1,800. It's available anytime. If I don't sell it before we find a new xj I may trade it in or talk my son into buying it... it's super clean, drives out ok, you can tell it's loose... but with 267,000 miles you'd expect that. ;) My son may pull the lift off the '96 and install it on the '87 if he buys it... the '96 should be ready to go away soon... hoping to finish it before I go to the conference... anyone want the 2dr shell? it's free... title is on the way... sorry for going so long... Hi B&K, Good answers so far, but here's something a little different... I had the throttle solenoid on the '88 go flakey. When it would fail, the truck would idle too low and die upon accelerating from a stop. Hesitate, gag, cough, and/or die. Fluttering the accel pedal could get me past the coughing fits.... If the solenoid in your case were totally dead, maybe you would not realize it.... the engine just doesn't have enough spin when you hit the gas for it to go. It drops the idle from the recommended 600 to about 450 in my case, not hardly enough to keep it running... Good Luck and keep us in the loop! Monday was a holiday in Canada, so that created a long weekend that was very welcome in my house. Saturday started off slow in the weather department, but Sunday was good weather and Monday was great! It was 75 degrees in the Vancouver area and summer was here. I had been a good boy and got all the yard chores done on Saturday, Sunday I spent some quality time with the younguns, well, teenagers now, and even found time for a 15 mile bike ride with Annette, followed up with steaks on the Barbie and had Annette's sister over for dinner and a visit that night. Monday I woke up at 7.30, aware that this had the makings of a hot summer day. What better way to enjoy the summer then a Backroads drive!!! ROAD TRIP !!! I called my friend Ron Patrick, checked with his wife Donna Mae to see if he was allowed to come out to play..he was, so I scooped him up and we headed to the Fraser Canyon. If you haven't heard of the Fraser Canyon, it is a wild gorge that lasts for 30 miles, with the Fraser River crashing and boiling it's way all along. We meandered along up the Canyon, stopping at places like Emory Creek, where the Chinese, that were brought over to work on the railway in the 1800's, worked over supposedly played out sand bars and meticuously (sp) strained even more gold from the river. We then headed up river and visited the old Alexandra Bridge. The first bridge was built in 1863, but was washed away by floods and rebuilt twice, the last in 1926. It was used until 1962, when the road through the Canyon was rebuilt and a new higher bridge was built. The it was up to Hell's Gate for a quick look around, snapped some pics of the tram cars and the buildings below in the gorge, then back down the Canyon and a side trip to the Hope Slide which occured in 1965. If all this sounds familiar, it's because this trip was a pre-amble to the Hell's Gate tour I am leading on July 21 Saturday with the PNW Backroad Drivers. It should be the same type of weather then, beautiful summer, lots of sunshine and stunning views to be had,,, To view the latest pictures go to my spot on Photopoint.com at http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=1428517&f=0 and looking for the "Fraser Canyon" album OR You can jump directly there by going to http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1428517&a=13000153&f=0 Hope you enjoy them, I had a GREAT day getting them......!!!!
