From: john I'm looking for the best replacement rotors for my '99 WJ (Grand Cherokee) Someone mentioned a good source, can't remember which list. The dealer has about 60 sets in stock, that says something right there... ;) NAPA had 0. Would racing type ventilated rotors be suitable on a GC???   I think these rotors are also used on Cherokees... NO WARRANTY. hold on friends... the auction place included a mileage statement that says the actual mileage is unknown and it is suspected that it was tampered. State police said so too. And based on the trouble with programming the key, it's obvious they swapped out the brains. So all bets off on the mileage... I went into the dealer stating that I'd purchased it as a theft recovery vehicle at an auction, and that it was re-vin'd by the Washington State Police. The dealer checked both vins and had records of it. Where they sort of messed up was in the math of converting from Kilometers to Miles last week. The last service under warranty was at 67,000 kilometers... The odometer now reads 31,000 miles. I didn't do the math at the time, but have since, and it's over 36,000 miles. In fact, it would be 41631.87 miles. :) Neither of us really figured it out, the problem was they said, sure, it's under warranty, bring it in... I did... they had trouble with programming the keys, looked it up again and then said, no warranty. Not a big deal, except that they were going to charge me the 4 hours the tech had spent "inspecting" the rear end. :) I said I'll pay for the key programming fee, even though you didn't program it, but I'm not paying the labor on the rear end inspection... They agreed and I only paid the $40 to have the key program attempted... I'm happy. I'm also looking at buying the extended warranty from the dealer, I stopped in, gave the VIN's to the finance guy and he's looking into it. I really don't care if they sell me one or not. At close to $2,000 I could replace just about any major part on the thing out of a wrecking yard... The only thing that might cause me to buy one is they're transferable and if I sell this thing it'll give the new owners a nice safety net and make it easier to sell. The dealer said it would cost about $1,500 to get the computers swapped out... I found a pair of computers for it for $250, just need to verify the part numbers. I didn't check on new parts at the dealer yet, will before I buy used though. :) Dealer service departments are, well, I don't usually like to use that kind of vocabulary... so let's just say they're for covered warranty items only. :) And after talking to the tech at Randy's Ring & pinion I'm not sure I'd have a dealership set up a R&P either. :) The tech said that once those rear ends are setup properly with the correct preload on the bearings they're fine. He said the factory overloads the preloads which wears out the carrier bearings. :) So the Dana 44's in the WJ Grand Cherokees are not something that are problems if set up correctly... And I trust what the guys at Randy's Ring & Pinion say, they know gears, that's all they do. :) So, it'll cost about $400 to $500 to get the noise fixed, but it'll be done correctly. I may add a skid plate truss setup to it just as an insurance policy, the tech seemed to think that wouldn't hurt at all. :) later, john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1354 **************************
