The idle speed seems a little high. I think mine fluctuates between about 650 to 850. I had it at over 1000 once and it seemed too high so I backed it off. I think a lot of folks take care of some deep seated problems with high idle speed sometimes. I think you need to set to the factory idle setting in order to get a good timing job. Higher idle speed will change timing. Like John says, look for vacuum leaks. I had to put a kit in my carburator and mess with the choke settings until I could get the Rez Runner growling properly. Now it has lots of torque at low RPM. - --Vince '81 Wagoneer (The REZ Runner, 360, 145,000 miles on original engine, one carb kit added) - ----- Original Message ----- From: "john" To: "Brandon Wagner" Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2001 12:31 AM Subject: fsj: Re: Question?! > passing this to the fsj lists for response... > just glancing it looks vacuum related... replace all rubber lines... tighten > manifold/carb base... > john > > t 09:53 PM 6/25/01 -0600, Brandon Wagner wrote: > >I have a 1978 AMC Jeep J10 with a 360cid engine. Either the start is on it's last legs (being redux drive, it's harder to trouble shoot internal problems w/o seeing it. An 500 amp ammeter inline with the starter cable and the coil wire pulled will test this. Shouldn't be more than 150 if it's good, IIRC), the engine bearings may have been roughed up from being overheated (some kind of additive may help, but it's not guaranteed), the timing chain gets stretched from being heated up, which throws the timing off a bit. When you shave the heads, you pump up the compression a bit (if uneven, kickback results), but I just reread and you mentioned backfire. If the powervalve is gone, the extra gas will flood the motor and hydrolock it (smell the engine oil on the dipstick for raw gas smell) Do you have a clacking noise or miss? A broken/worn out exhaust rocker will cause hold back, because the air will go into the cylinder, but not be able to come back out, except up the intake. (wiped out cam lobes are another possibility along this line) That's the worst case scenarios. It sounds more like carb to me. (On the other hand, if the headhasket is still leaking slightly, the compression boost will make it hard to start as well. Have the headbolts retorqued!) From: RFISCHEL-at-osc.state.ny.us Hello all, still suffering with the hot start problem with my '89 Grand Wagoneer, cranks like a low battery until it catches. Retarded the timing by 1.5deg's, starts a little better than before, but still hard; occasional backfire from carburetor. Wife now refuse to drive car. Is there something that could have been assembled wrong after the head-gasket was replaced that could be causing this problem? Had not been an issue prior to replacing gasket and water-pump. Checked the battery connections, new wires and a ground to the frame. About a week ago, a tragedy started to unfold in the Coventry Connecticut high school 9th & 10th grade English classes that should shock anyone. Especially anyone who believes in the right to free speech and the ability for a person to have their own opinion. Constitutional issues to say the least. "I went home and told my dad about this and he first thought I was full of crap" states Meagan, a student in Ms. Chamber's English class. The assignment? A LETTER TO THE STATES ENVIROMENTAL AGENCY ABOUT HOW DIRTBIKES AND ATV's ARE A MAJOR CONTRIBUTER TO CONNECTICUTS POLLUTION PROBLEMS. Meagan, an avid MX racer herself and author of her own Motocross website, sat in class in disbelief. "I asked her if I could write about something else." states Meagan, "Because I did not want to write to the state about this." Her (Ms. Chambers) answer: "NO". "I told her I would write it, but I didn't want it sent in to the state. I said that it is kind of hypocritical of me to write something bashing dirt bikes when I race them myself." Ms. Chambers answer: "This is the assignment, you do it the way it's assigned or you fail." This politically motivated, opinionated writing assignment was to be 25% of the student's final grade! Meagan's father, hoping to resolve the situation, arranged to have a conference with Ms. Chambers. He attempted to explain how she couldn't force her students to write about something from her opinion. Ms. Chambers told him it was not her problem and left the room. Meagan's father would have to arrange a meeting with the school principal to address the situation any further. Meagan's father then talked with the Board of Education where Ms. Chambers was "overruled" as they put it. However, Ms. Chambers still forced all of the remaining kids in the class to complete the original assignment! "One other kid who races go-carts also felt the same way I did" says Meagan "but from what he said he did it anyway." Meagan's father was able to get the school to accept an article which she wrote for racing Motocross, but so far her grade still stands at FAILING! On Wednesday, Meagan and her family are heading to Virginia for a regional Motocross race this coming weekend. Her final grade for English still listed as "failing" because she stood up for herself and her rights by refusing to propagate a self-interested and politically manipulative writing assignment which Ms. Chambers is currently mailing to the state offices under the misleading pretence that these are the opinions of the students! How can this happen? How can the teachers whom we trust with the education of our children be allowed to force an opinion on them? Especially when it contradicts the personal views, opinions and beliefs that parents raise their children to have! This goes far beyond the topic of off road vehicles or any other environmental issues. This issue is of a teacher who is forcing her students, under penalty of failing her class, to write a paper voicing her opinion and then mailing it into the senate under the claim that these are the concerns of the students. Even those students who try, in vein, to voice a differing opinion! Below you will find a listing of contact information pertinent to the town of Coventry Connecticut, their Board of Education, and CT Senate contacts.
