The reason you hear a hiss is because the diaphram on the trans or front axle (I didn't notice which year your was) is shot. The vacuum exhausts through the switch, and a constant hiss means the suction is going down to the vac motor, and all the way back to the switch, with no diaphragm between to stop it. It is possible the hoses are just on wrong, but that's less likely. To test the switch, take the 3 hoses off (I cut mine a ways from the switch, so I could add in other vacuum controlled stuff for my heater, which has a similar switch) Join the line with vac to one of the other lines. You should hear suction from the 3rd one for a couple seconds, then stop. If not, the shift motor is shot. It's basically just like a vacuum advance unit that can push or pull. I will be posting a pic of the unit I reshipped yesterday (USPS is not allowing any package over -at-1lb go without being inspected. They send it back to your house!) From: btegtmei-at-npps.esu16.k12.ne.us (Brian Tegtmeier (Mec)) Hi, My 2wd , 4wd selector (selec-trac) switch on the dash has a leak and will not hold a vaccuum sufficient enough to switch from 2wd to 4. I had the jeep dealer order a replacement switch for me , $60.00 bucks for the little metal switch. So I took apart my selector switch, put in the new one and it leaks :( , I can hear it hiss. I noticed a grease on the surface of the switch, I am guessing that there isn't enough of that stuff on the switch to make a good seal. Does anyone know what kind of grease to use if I was to add more (it's kinda yellowish white)? I am going to take that part back today to the dealer and see if they will order me another but I wonder if the switch would be fine if it had more grease. The new switch part number is a Mopar J3240218 Switch. If I held the switch between my fingers and pressed on the top of the switch I could get the hiss to calm down. Jeep dealership ordered me another part and they said if that one works then they can warranty the first part they gave me. ===================== Brian Tegtmeier <>< Network Admin North Platte Public Schools 308-535-7100 x171 btegtmei-at-esu16.org ===================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 10:09:53 -0700 From: "Phillips, Scott" Subject: RE: fsj: Eco-Nazi Teacher Forces Eco-Doctrine on Students Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 20:59:14 -0400 William Killian wrote: >Interestingly enough someone actually talked to the principal at that >high school and the story was completely different. > >His claim is that Meagan choose not to write the pro or con article as >assigned. With the current system, if it goes, you can still steer, though not very well. But what happens if your electric motor goes? your left unable to control your car? Even the fairly ependable hydraulic brakes we have are backed up mechanically. I hope when this does come out, they back it up somehow... ~dave On Thu, 28 Jun 2001, Phillips, Scott wrote: > Got this from another list: > http://www.latimes.com/news/highway1/20010627/t000052990.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 16:33:38 -0500 From: "R.J. Perhaps you could have someone fabricate one - i.e. larger diameter tube that locks onto your existing trailer tongue and extends the reach by about 15 feet. Temporary use of course. :) - --Vince '81 Wagoneer - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Landon Tesar" To: Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2001 4:49 PM Subject: fsj: Boat Pulling > Hi, > > I want to pull my sailboat, the trailer has to be pretty far in the > water. It shouldn't be hard to find at a marine store that sells trailers. If the boat and trailer were not meant to be ramp launched, you are asking for trouble. Getting the boat back on the trailer will require you to get into the water to make sure everything is sitting correctly before you move the boat/trailer combination up the ramp.
