It feels good to purge.... I don't need all this stuff... been saving it for the ultimate FSJ... I've finally got my FSJ design together and in process. It took 14 Full Size Jeeps to get the mix correct. Years of parts gathering and collecting. But I finally hit upon the right formula, for me... SuperDawg won't be a heavy hauler, won't fry the tires, won't dust off 5.0 mustangs, and won't be an econocar... but he'll be somewhere in the middle with decent capabilities in all departments with a long-lived driveline. If I get 16 mpg around town I will be satisfied. (snip) A: Still not sure what Blackie will run like yet with the LPFI, but some of the XJ and CJ guys with stock cams are running low 14s in the 1/4 with their strokers and premium gas! That kind of power/speed and 20 mpg around town, and I'll have my heavy hauler (5th wheel), economy enough (LPG is $1 a gallon and -at-130 octane equivalent to match my 10.5:1 compression) >I guess I'll need to get a new muffler for SuperDawg, recommendations? The two chamber flowmaster I had on the little wag was bit loud... and that stock muffler from the '96 is too restrictive... 3 chamber flowmaster then? What's the OD of the pipe behind the Cat? If I have time I'll get one before we get together....   The parts pile grows here.... :) john A: You mean the '96 XJ's cat? I'd suggest getting a cat-back system for the '96, and making pipes for the difference! Now they tell me I need a master > > cyclinder. The dealer told me he would have to get a price for me. A master cylinder shouldn't take more than an hour of labor at any shop. IF they bench bleed it they could have it swapped easily in 20 minutes. If your brake fluid is rusty colored you may want to have them power flush the system. (I posted links below where I show the process.) I've swapped out several Master Cylinders in my driveway without bleeding the brakes. Did a ford van, a '67 J3000, a '67 Fairlane, an '81 Wagoneer, and an '83 J10... all by bench bleeding... all within the last year or so... all without disabling the vehicle or "special tools". The rear brakes are drum style and take a bit of "skill". The front calipers could be done by you without getting your nails dirty. :) I taught a car care class at church and had a bunch of single mom's lining up to do stuff like this. IT's not hard at all. That means the price shouldn't be too bad. I'd say AVOID DEALERSHIPS AND FRANCHISE SHOPS if at all possible. Find a local gearhead who knows what he's talking about and ask him where he or she would take their car. Go to a speed shop and a 4x4 shop and ask around who is worthy to work on your Jeep. Get a couple of independent quotes if you're concerned. First step, call a Jeep dealer. get the price on a master cylinder, front brake pads, rear brake shoes. That's a baseline to work from and the MOST you should pay for those parts. Many dealerships offer discounts, maybe 10% off list, maybe more... ask, most parts managers are very easy to work with. They are rated by how often they turn their inventory as well as the profit margin. They are also interested in good public relations. (It's the folks in the service department that will gouge out your eyes trying to get to your wallet... parts department folks, great, service department folks, not so great... but your mileage may vary, there are dealerships with decent service departments... They MUST exist out there somewhere... anyone???? ;) I heard an ad on the radio for a $47 brake job, can't remember the chain, one of those franchise places I told you not to go... ;) ... I'm thinking of taking my Jeep down to 'em with my new rotors and let them do the brake pads... ;) But I'll be watching them like a hawk... On second thought I'll take it to my independent mechanic if I don't do it myself... why create trouble for myself... ;) If you are going to go to a franchise place because you have no other choice then Sears might be a safe bet. They've been under a lot of scrutiny of late and will most likely be on their best behavior. :) I'd avoid Midas like the plague, I can tell ya horror stories that have happened to me and my Jeeps in their hands. A free brake inspection almost killed a number of people at the bottom of a hill... luckily I had room to move to the shoulder... ;) > > Well sucker isn't written on my farhead anymore. Unfortunately the only shop manuals worth the paper they're written on are the factory manuals and they assume you're a mechanic. :( The Chilton's manual is pathetic. The Haynes manual is better, but severely lacking. You can check my server for pictures of various brake jobs on Full Size Jeeps and XJ's. The brakes are very similar between the two so you'd be able to pick up an idea of what's involved: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Brakes/ (see the bench bleeding instructions) http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Brakes/bench-bleed-instructions.jpg here's the "index" of the brake job on my 80 Cherokee, very, very similar to your 90 xj believe it or not: http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/johns-80-Cherokee/March3-2001/ALL-March3-2001.jpg http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/johns-80-Cherokee/March3-2001 http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech http://www.wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/Brakes/ I think these pictures are of my rear disc conversion on my XJ... > > Any sites you know of with instructions or do you know what a > > fair price would be for the installation if a mechanic was going to do > this. I'd guesstimate around $200 for a new master cylinder and front and rear pads/shoes. They may want to turn the rotors and drums... I've found that unless the rotor or drums are not out of round or warped that the grooves that may be there don't hurt anything... in fact, they provide more surface area. :) The only possible drawback is that your new linings will wear slightly faster... big deal... pads are going to wear out and are a lot cheaper than new rotors and drums. :) But that's my twisted idea and so far it's been working just dandy for the last 22 years or so... ;) Most shops will routinely turn rotors and drums until they're out of spec and then replace 'em... if you go to an outfit like midas or other franchise places, they'll replace everything with new regardless of need... they may claim it reduces liability... it also maximized their profit... they make copius amounts of money on the parts... find an independent shop and ask if he'll let you supply the parts... most will... but you're cutting into his living if you do that... if he's reasonably priced he's not going to gouge you too badly for those parts... but shop 'em before going there... As far as parts, don't go to the el cheapo chain parts stores... the quality of the parts is pathetic... NAPA or the dealer, and maybe a CarQuest... While you may pay a bit more for parts at the dealer, you know that 95% of the time you're getting the best quality you can. Just stay away from their service department!!!! ;) > > Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. Cathy well, personally I find Solomon's books to be the best.
