Let me tell you about WIND RESISTANCE...Friday afternoon I was driving between Corpus Christi and Rockport in a really rotten storm. On the causeway between Corpus Christi and Portland (it crosses a large section of Corpus Christi and Nueces Bays), I encountered winds in excess of 45mph (sustained) and 60mph (gusts). I felt like I was an insect of some kind. That wind blew me and the CJ all over the road. Of course, a soft top may as well be a parachute in that kind of wind. I felt like I was driving a brick wall in a wind tunnel. Anyway, here in this area, we see a constant wind from the Gulf of Mexico (aka the Gulf breeze) that doesn't always live up to its name. the name "Gulf Breeze" was DEFINITELY a misnomer that day. I hope I never have to drive that thing in a tropical storm or (Heaven forbid) a hurricane. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-fsj-at-digest.net [mailto:owner-fsj-at-digest.net]On Behalf Of James Blair Sent: Monday, November 19, 2001 01:34 AM To: 1FSJ-at-yahoogroups.com; fsj-at-digest.net; john-at-wagoneers.com Subject: fsj: Messing with numbers and diff info I checked out an email I got from the Explorers forum (where I ask q's about the wife's '99 Ranger. The same list where the "Herculiner on the Hootis" string came from! ) and discovered one of our local diff guys has opened a shop cross country from us in Tenesee! Anyway, I was messing around with the calculators on Randy's Ring and Pinion website (http://www.ring-pinion.com) and found out they have a discount for people from the Explorer4x4 list (I can send you the link if you want to read it yourself) of 10-30% (the more sales, the more discount!) As I was saying (before I broke into the ad for these guys! ) I ran the following numbers through: With my J10 running 4.10 gears (that I want) 33" tires (that I have), .75 gears (the O/Din my AW4 auto) at 60 mph, my stroker motor will be turning 1879 RPM, and 100 mph -at-2528 RPM. If I have to run the 3.31 gears I have now, 60 mph will be 1517 RPM and at 100 MPH -at-2359 RPM. Since over 100 mph in a lifted FSJ won't be necessary too often (it was good enough in Elmo -at-4000RPM!) or all that sane either (who me? ) I'm wondering if I should go lower yet. (If I do, I may as well get D60 rear while I'm at it) I have 300+HP to play with (I know the wind resistance is increased by squares. The faster you go, the resistance jumps exponentially. 30 mph is like 90, and 40 is like 160, etc) ************************************* JimBlair, Seattle,WA '84 J10, '86 Comanche http://www.geocities.com/eaglemania2002/ http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=13998 ************************************** ------------------------------ Date: 20 Nov 2001 13:49:30 MST From: Michael Shimniok Subject: Re: [fsj: RE: Messing with numbers and diff info] It'd probably be easier to drive if you put the top down. :D (You just have to make sure YOU aren't wearing any wind catching loose clothing. :) Michael "Ken Gaines" wrote: > Wind resistance?
