Obviously there is not going to be an FSJ 2002 calendar, at least not immediately. There seemed to be far less interest in the project this year than last so rather than spend a lot of time putting it together quickly, I decided to take a step back and look at things long-term. First, as my Jeep photography portfolio grows more extensive, my thoughts have turned to making this a project with commercial potential. I must have 30 2002 calendars in my office now and I am preparing proposals for submission to the various publishers. I figure now is the time to get a plan for 2003 in place. Although I would prefer to do an all-FSJ calendar, I think that would be commercial suicide so my plan is to do an 18-month calendar that would include examples of all the Jeeps from the last 60 years. This would include MBs, CJs, Wranglers, XJs, Grand Cherokees, station wagons and pickups, maybe one of the concepts that I have shot, and of course FSJs. The plan would be to have a combination of beauty shots (like in the last calendar), Jeeps in action on the trail, a factory publicity photo or two and maybe a shot of a vintage Jeep dealership, a calendar with broad appeal. I'd like to take some of the data and statistics I've amassed in research on my book, and include as much as I can into open space on the calendar. If you go to Borders or Barnes and Noble, they have hundreds of calendars available each fall, typically from $10 to $20. My question is do any of you think a $15 Jeep-only calendar is viable and would you buy a professionally printed calendar that was all-Jeep rather than all-FSJ? (In my plan, at least three, possibly four of the months would feature FSJs.) I have another idea that I'm working on. When I stopped into my local Kragen the other day, they had a very nice car culture calendar on sale for a $1.00 donation to the Boys and Girls Club of America. Although printed on very lightweight stock, it was coated and the quality of the photography was topnotch, easily the equal of what is found in magazines like Car and Driver, Motor Trend and Automobile. The photographer credited was Lonna Tucker. This may have been an in-house project at Checker/Schucks/Kragen and I am going to do more research on it. The calendar has coupons for various products so I suspect its cost is probably subsidized by co-op advertising funds but overall, it is an impressive package. I can easily imagine a similar project with just Jeeps or even possibly all FSJs but I suspect that even with digital prepress, a run of at least 1,000 units would be required. (Maybe Len Sullivan, if he reads this, can do a little digging into this at corporate HQ and get back to me with some contact info on the production team?) My thoughts are also running towards producing something similar for a Jeep-only vendor, maybe an 18-month calendar with a first date of July 2002 running through to December 2003. Is anyone on these lists connected at all with a Jeep supplier that might be interested in something along these lines? If so, please contact me off list. I am open to doing an all-FSJ calendar if it is economically viable but I'm thinking that doing an all Jeep calendar first, then if successful, doing more specialized niche calendars. I know I'm throwing a lot of ideas out there but I was disappointed that I did not have the opportunity to do a 2002 calendar. Although it was a lot of work, I enjoyed putting together the 2001 calendar and certainly enjoyed getting all of the positive feedback. I would like to do it again but if I do, I'd want it to be even better than the first effort, which I feel came off exceptionally well given all of the limitations (thanks again Mark Welle for all the effort you put into the 2001 edition from your end). I look forward to getting feedback from the members of the various Jeep mailing lists and after I get back from the Detroit Auto Show and the Consumer Electronics Show in mid-January, I'll let everyone know how this might move forward. Best wishes to everyone this holiday season.
