It's wear and tear on the rockers making a gap (sometimes a lifter collapsing, but less common) If you're going on a trip, take some spare rockers and pushrods and either valve cover gaskets or silicone in a tube (I'm partial to black myself) just in case the noise is a pushrod passing through a rocker (common) or bent pushrod (also common) I drove my friend's '76 from Portland OR to Seattle with 5 bent pushrods and one broken rocker at 60 mph. (It backfired when the throttle was pressed harder) From: "Randy Thomas" Subject: lifter noise Recently noticed some lifter noise (light tapping) - most noticeable at idle/low RPMs. What does this indicate....how can I check to see if it is serious or fix it fast(?) (planning on taking it on 1600 mile round trip - tomorrow). Engine runs strong, oil recently changed, timing chain recently replaced -no other problems, etc. Thanks for any help. This probably indicates - stuck lifter ! Also, maybe a bent pushrod, also maybe a soft cam lobe, in that order of probability. A long trip at sustained speed and temperature with fresh oil is a good way to work this one out IMHO. - - Landon - ----------------- > From: "Randy Thomas" > Subject: fsj: FW: lifter noise > > Subject: lifter noise > > Recently noticed some lifter noise (light tapping) - most noticeable at > idle/low RPMs. What does this indicate....how can I check to see if it is > serious or fix it fast(?) I'm sure the motor and gearing is tuned to put the diesel at peak torque at the 'right' speed, which may not correspond neatly to the 180kph/100mph... it was tested at? Just a guess. *big shrug* I would expect a TD to get phenomenal hwy mileage.... I have a pair on SuperDawg (my '83 J10 Stepside). http://wagoneers.com/JEEPS/IPF-lights/00may5-superdawg-IPF.jpg I can light up a better part of the Snohomish Valley when I kick them on... I also watch my amp gauge shoot up about 40 amps too... :) http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/IPF-lights/40.83-amps.jpg They are serious driving lights... I've got some info on other IPF lights: http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/IPF-lights/ I've also used a set of the 630 Driving lights... they're good for fill, the 55w bulbs are humble, but 100W bulbs help them... but they're in a totally different league than the 800s. Those things are incredible... The larger round lights below are the J-01s, combination fog and "driving lights". The fog light part is good, comparable to a good Bosch lamp, the inner ones on the front of my XJ are the 630s. http://www.wagoneers.com/XJ/xjsunset.jpg john - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Dec 2001 09:23:44 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: Greetings!
