Some of the folks "new" to the FSJ list might wonder... "why Ouray"? On the original FSJ list the topic came up that the 40th anniversary of the FSJ would come up. It was significant for at least one person, Super Ken, since he was born around the same time. ;) So, us charter member types decided that we would get together. But where? We decided that it should be somewhere in the center of the USA. But the center of the USA is flat and boring. East of center is even more boring... West was best, but if we went too far west it would be too far for the east... what to do... So, we all agreed that Colorado would be close enough to the center, and yet provide ample scenery, adventure and trails. Mark Wallace, from my recollection, was the one who suggested Ouray. He who was going to school in Boston, but was from New Mexico. He mentioned the trails, Engineer Pass, and the scenic benefits. He had an'81 Wagoneer Brougham, that he drove across the country meeting as many folks as he could... he made it all the way out here: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/MarkWallace-81wag-with-OldBlue His engine failed but he was able to limp it down to New Mexico and rebuilt it in his parent's kitchen... Then drove it back up to Boston. He graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree last year I think and I haven't heard from him for quite a while... It worked out quite nicely since it was no one's home location, so we all have to get up and go there. :) Here's the original folks: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/FSJ-charter.html So, that's why Ouray. :) (feel free to pass this along to the rebel lists... ;) john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2002 15:48:25 -0700 From: "JC Jones" Subject: RE: fsj: the Ouray adventure Wow, and I thought my trip from Denver with 36" Super Swampers was rough. We're still tossing around the idea of bringing my '74 on a trailer... or even driving it. (It has a bit lower gears than the '88 and worse mileage... Not really too excited about driving it over 2000mi over a few days. But it sure would be fun on the trails!) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's to our wives and sweethearts... You won't fit 33's without risking tire damage offroad or otherwise. By trimming the rear fender opening you can run 33's. From this point to upgrade to 35's you need to add a 2" body lift. Wheel width is important too. Too wide and you may have to trim more. Too narrow and they may rub inside.
