Low range is not locked on the BW1339 unless emergency drive is engaged. All the other xfr cases lock up in low range. If emergency drive is engaged on the BW1339 then you aren't supposed to run it on hard surfaces, with or without low range... ;) I don't know why you like these things so much. Special fluid, slip-stick, poor fuel economy... I don't know... I much prefer the NP219 to the old Borg Warner friction cone clutch design... :) Sure, they're heavy duty... big deal. ;) john ==================================================================== If it exhibits ambulatory and auditory characteristics consistent with current data on a small waterfowl with flat bill, short neck and webbed feet, it would be illogical to assume that it is anything other than a duck. However, in this era of post-modern license with basic linguistic commodities, our view is only relative and if we say we know the truth, we will be labeled a hateful, narrow-minded, intolerant bigot. So a duck is only a duck when you embrace his world view, otherwise, it's just a bunch of funny looking parts. john-at- http://wagoneers.com ''De Ominibus Dubitantum.'' Doubt everything. Do you have rH or lh pumpkins on your front axle? Do you have a high horsepower motor and want to go mud bogging? It's the same kind of question as what's better a V8 or a straight 6, or a manual transmission versus an automatic? :) Both are good. The Borg Warner design is heavier duty, but becoming harder to find parts and fluid for. The NP219 was only made a few years, isn't quite as stout as the BW1339, but seems to be more economical. The NP219 can be replaced with other NP style xfr cases where as the BW1339 uses a unique 10 spline input shaft and is massive... Replacing a BW1339 requires transmission mods... Bottom line... if you have a '73 to '79 Wagoneer the BW1339 is better, if you have an '80 and up Wag/J10 then the NP219 is better... unless of course you want to change the axles and transmission. :) I know JC will claim the BW1339 is better, while I'll sing the song of the NP219. I've had about 14 FSJs... only a couple with the old style quadratrac... and frankly the ones that had it were in sad shape... Old Blue had the NP219 and it was fantastic. Of course I may end up using an NP242 (23 spline, install a SYE and maybe a 4:1 input gear) in SuperDawg. I have an NP219 right now, but need to make a small adapter to make it work with the '96 Aisin Warner 30-80LE tranny that's behind the '96 4.0L HO motor... Unless of course I win that bid at the auction for the wrecked '99 WJ with the 4.0L in it... that has the 45RFE and NP(V?) 242... :) fat chance of that happening, I bid all of $250... So, how many remember the threads of 2dr vs 4dr, V8 vs I6, full time vs part time, and the old classic, "what's snow"? :) john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 22:38:31 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: Ouray got the visitor's guide to Ouray in the mail today. :) reservations made, vacation scheduled... now all I need is my J10 Stepside to be ready to go... hopefully by May or June... :) It's going to be great... SuperDawg is getting a full frame off resto, '96 4.0L HO, Aisin Warner 4spd auto overdrive and either the NP219 that I have or an NP242 that will be fitted with a SYE and maybe a 4:1 low range kit. My little '83 ford ranger diesel has rubber mats and it's nice not having to worry about carpeting getting wet or muddy... since it only rains once a year here that is helpful... (once is from about September until July). http://wagoneers.com/superdawg if all else fails I'll make it in my wife's '99 wj, http://wagoneers.com/WJ or maybe my son's '77 Cherokee... wait, no a/c, 8mpg... nah, I'll bring pictures of my FSJ if SuperDawg ain't ready... :) The pictures in the visitor's guide reveal a very nice location. Subject: fsj: Those Little Power Hungry Gadgets Greetings To The FSJ World! Here is a tip that could stop you from pulling your hair out. If you have a Jacobs ignition controller, and coil setup on your Jeep, and have experienced your battery going flat after your truck sits idol for several days, forcing you to drag out those jumper cables; the Jacobs system might just be the culprit. I found on the USS GW that the Jacobs System was drawing over seven volts from the battery with the truck shut down. Well this will kill off the best of batteries in short order; not to mention the fact that it robs you of the peak cranking ability of your battery when you hit that starter in the morning. I contacted the friendly folks at Jacobs and they told me that they had experienced this mystery drain on other AMC applications. The solution is to remove the Jacobs system's positive connection from the terminal on your trucks battery. Connect it to a relay that you trigger off of the large red wire that is in the Jacobs Red, and Black harness that has the weather tight connector in its mid section. You will find that this red wire goes to one of the terminals that serviced the O. E. coil on your truck. This connection becomes live when you turn on the key. Once you connect in the relay you will have a much happier, drain free battery. Until The Next Dimension, Admiral "Coluch." This is the same problem that I had when I installed my fuel injection. The solution is: If you are using a Delco Alternator with 3 leads (Plus the power lead, the big red one.), the diode is mounted as recommended in the lead identified as b^\1b^] on the wiring diagrams for the engine. The wire color for 1980 is Orange. A 10 amp diode will get the job done with enough reserve capacity and the white band (the cathode) will go next to the alternator. It prevents feed back to the alternator field windings that can happen when the ignition is turned of which will shut down the alternator. The points system does not do this because the feed back requires a lot of current to run the allternator this way. As soon as an 'Electronic' package, such as your MSD box is installed as an alternative, the box requires very little current in this mode to keep running on and it will. The insertion of the diode prevents this from happening. This diode can be installed with butt splices and it is not a bad idea to cover the diode and the leads etc. with heat shrink tubing to prevent the weather from getting after the leads. I've heard others tell tales of woe about the super coils and modules, that they don't hold up to abuse. My own experience has been cutout at higher rpm, loss of fuel economy and just generally rough running. This sounds like a serious design flaw in their module. You shouldn't have to add a relay to make it work. But, to each his own... ;) john On Tue, 26 Feb 2002, B.
