This AM before going to work I watched Trucks! on TNN and they had header keepers or something like that that kept the flanges from warping and the gaskets from blowing. Also, I hear people complain about headers constantly leaking, and meanwhile they have sloppy motor mounts, broken tranny mounts and mufflers that are swinging in the breeze! Now I'm watching Monster Jam. (I'd send you guys a clip, but this list doesn't accept attachments) I think the newer ('88 or so) exhaust manifolds have no donut of the driver's side (cast into the manifold) I would weld some steel donuts on myself if I had the older rig. (my 6 cyl has a factory header from a 4.0l going in) From: "Brian Turner" Got some questions, on exhaust. When my jeep, the 73 wag got the works, made the mistake and put on headers. Had exhaust leaks since. Have over a hundred bucks in gaskets. But that is another story. The nephew jeep, (from road trip), had bad exhaust, so they (both nephews) ok the oldest is 22, and the youngest is 19, took the jeep into town and had the exhaust replaced. Just stock from manifold to tail pipe. Will the exhaust man cut the pipe about a foot from the manifold and made new to the end. The axle hit the new pipe. So let the nephews learn how to deal with shops, made them take it back. They got some run around. So I took it back with them. The town is small with a lot of people in the county so it is not like every one knows every one type of town. The dude was cool with the problem with the axle part and fixed it right there. But the dilemma of the right side exhaust, I know about the heat riser, 85 bucks to replace and could work maybe 3 or 4 years and ...........But they leak. Mine on the 73 was so bad I went to headers (and they leak). So the problem is on the left is a flange with donut. On the right is the riser that cracks. Two things replace the riser with a flat gasket. (which are prone to leak). Or take the riser and cut out the guts and braze up the riser and braze to the exhaust manifold. What is the worst of too evils. Already had experience with headers so that is out. In the end gotta love Jeeps, because nothing else is a Jeep. And the jeep will get you home. Been driven the jeep(not much) but has a broken flex plate. Got use to town and talked to the muffler guy. Sounded ugly going home, but got us there. It has been this way shortly after we put the new rebuilt 360 back in the honcho.. I wonder is this header keep a good thing to get or think about getting new gaskets for both sides? We had used the old gaskets.. the other side is fine.. I think now the Blown gasket is a even more full blow out then it was, I have been driving around, with that obnoxious ticking noise for some time. ( almost a year now) I have been meaning to get to it.. So when I do my steering Box, I think I will handle that too.. You really can not see it ( the blow out) or feel it since the big plastic Heater Box ( I think) on the right side is Blocking the way. Seems like a bugger to get to though, maybe that's why I have not gotten to yet? Also Should I have the Manifolds shaved down anyway, or checked to see for warping? for both sides? What should be the cost? If I am going to do that, I might as well change the gaskets too, don't you think? R.J. How do you replace the riser with out spenting 85 bucks on a new one. And if you do remove how do you seal the exhaust with a flat gasket? Do you braze in the old one with out guts or gasket? Is there a replacement part that takes its place with out guts? Have to take the Jeep back in a couple of days to get done. Because the next progect is the flex plate, which involese dropping the exhaust to get to the tranny and transfer case. Have to move them to replace the flex plate. Right now the flex plate sound better than a machine gun. So it is only a mover in the drive way.
