Hi, my two cents. I like q-jets when they work. Had a 4 bbl on Cadillac, Chevy truck, Essentially no problems in 150K miles. But once the thing on the truck went bad, it went really bad. Got to the point it was so rich it wouldn't run unless I kept the pedal on the floor. I rebuilt it twice, and same problem went away and returned in about two weeks. I tried to make sure the power valve was free, with no help. Otherwise, I really liked it, just don't have the community around here that shares how to work on it. Adjusting the float is kinda wierd. I rebuilt my 2150 after getting water in the gas tank. Once I figured out the vacuum ports, things are fine. I can adjust the choke, fast idle, idle, idle mixture.... I always contemplate moving away from factory setup with cold air intake, amsoil filter. How do you get #52 jets, and how do you install them, Michael ? - -Landon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 10:05:44 -0800 (PST) From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: Re: fsj: RE: RE: TH400 Info A: IIRC, one is Texas pattern and the other was something else. Baynum" Subject: fsj: Will the REAL proper thermostat for 80 J-10, PLEASE stand up! Okay,.. Here's the problem.. In cooling.. Low speed vrs high speed I did have last year , without a radiator shroud, had a temp reading, about 5/8 to 6/8 in the green, on the gauge, at a stop in traffic, it went to 7/8.. So I thought to my self,, Maybe I should get a cooler thermostat? So I went down to Auto Zone, where they said it called for a 190, but you had a choice, you could also go with the 180, or the 160 degree thermostat.. So I opted for the 160.. Now Here in in the Redneck state of Alabama, we have mild winters, so I thought okay it will work out in the summer too ( gets really hot, sticky, humid and Jungle sweating like!) Well anyway, this winter it stay in the middle of the cold area of the gauge.. with the new shroud put on it. Today, it is 73 degrees, and it just barely, below the green normal operating temp, sitting idle running, with the shroud, still has the 160 degree thermostat in it.. Going down the road today it went down to the middle of the cold area.. Okay, So. Is this good for the Engine, combustion and the ignition? I do notice at one point when it was at the green line one day it was running warmer, it was performing a bit faster and more responsive.. which is why it makes me wonder.. what is the proper thermostat? Should it be in the middle of the green area? It does not seem right for some reason... I just came back inside, from turning it off, I am doing a super flush on the Radiator, it has been running now for 20 minutes, as I write this, just water and flush, and it is sitting at the middle of the Cold area.. Also what is the best ratio of anti freeze? still 50/50? Thanks for any help! Your friend, R.J. My preference will be to buy a new vehicle. If I decide on something that I can't afford new, say a Gelandewagen, then I'll look at used but certainly not anything owned by an enthusiast. the correct used vehicle is always something bought by its original owner for the wrong reasons. For example a G-wagen owned by a typical soccer mom for three years might have 30-35000 easy miles and be priced about 40% of a new model. The last thing I want to happen is a breakdown in CENTAM due to something that was hard to spot or completely unforeseen. So old vehicles, enthusiast owned vehicles are not an option. RJ, control yourself...don't go spouting off like you have the definitive answer. Everyone has opinions and preferences. Don't go flaming someone just for saying something. I, for one, agree with Jeff on many points. I had my '79 wag and it was great for doing what it needed to do...get me around in the MN winters and haul stuff (people, dirt, kayaks). But, you put four guys in it and there's not much room left. Yes, it's a full size, but they are ~8" narrower than other full sizes and much smaller than the Excursion, Surburban and even the Yukon. The drivetrain is similar to that found on other vehicles of it's class. When I got rid of the '79, I looked around for a newer model. The core of the interior was updated in the late '70s for the Limited editions and really didn't change much till the end (minus the dash, upper console and other minor things). The outdated styling of the carpet and the seats prevented me from purchasing a Jeep. I went with the Volvo AWD wagon instead...after all, it was going to be my wifes car...and it's really nice. Of course, these are my opions and my preferences... I also really love the exterior of the wag/cher and am still a member of the mailing list because I like the correspondense...I still have the Jeep sickness and speak proudly of them. Who knows, maybe someday I may get another one...or maybe I'll get a Bronco, LandCruiser or a Rover. So, ease up on the flaming and keep this list family oriented.
