The 249 has no 2wd position. The early (pre '96) 249's also didn't have any provision to lock the center diff, which made them nearly useless offroad. (no traction on the front or rear....80 percent of the power goes to the wheels without traction). 242: 2hi, 4hi, 4hi lock, n, 4lo 241: 2hi, 4hi lock, n, 4 lo Jack Bergeron, idiotnot-at-visi.net T-5 (John's anyway) 22" Tonight, I measured the 998 (23 spline) and AW4 (John's 21 spline version. Anyone know how long the adapter sleeve housing is on a 23 spline one?) tonight, and they were 22 1/2" and 25" handle maximum stress for strokers (using parts from Lexus AW4 trannies and HD aftermarket stuff) {Note to John: How far is it from the end of the adapter housing of the AW4 to the center of the tranny mount bolt holes? That was the one thing I forgot to measure because we were gabbing.} A 21 spline NP231 was 17" to the slip yoke and a NP229 is 18" (plus the yoke to Ujoint). NP208 is how long? (I'll measure tomorrow) A: Now for the age old question: Has anyone done a stroker with the HO head and Renix system, and can you use regular fuel W/O ping? (or midgrade. Premium WON'T be available forever according to the EPA list I've been getting bits of info from. I get it 3rd hand through the Ford Racing list I used to be on, forwarded by a buddy there) BTW: I was going through my old mail yesterday, and I lost the info on putting Chev pistons in the 4.2L for LPG. I think it was Tom or Frank that sent it to me. (I tried searching archives, but I get "webtv can't use that info" message) Frank Swygert wrote: Most of us who have cheap strokers use standard 4.0 pistons and 4.2 (258) crank and rods. The 258 crank made from 71-86 needs to be shortened by 0.30" or a spacer needs to be made to push the 4.0 balancer back that much further (I used a spacer). My engine runs fine with no pinging on 80 octane fuel. I'm using the older 87-90, mine is 87) head and Renix fuel injection system. I prefer the Renix because it uses a knock sensor. It isn't hard to troubleshoot, but doesn't have built in diagnostics. I've only hd to take it to the dealer once for a hard to find problem. Turned out being a bad electrical connector, not in the computer at all. The combustion chamber is slightly larger than later models, bringing the compression down to 9.4-9.5:1. 91-up models run 9.5-9.7:1, which causes some pinging unless you run 92+ octane fuel. You could polish the combustion chamber or mill the piston dish 5-6 cc more to reduce the compression and probably be able to run 89 octane with no problems. - -- Frank Swygert -- Warner Robins, GA ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Mar 2002 00:37:07 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: '66 Wagoneer question (mine) A: In my son's pursuit of the '76 J10 parts rig, he has acquired a '66 Wagoneer with all glass intact (the body is another story) He knows it's a TH400 trans and V8, but doesn't know which motor yet (V8 327 or 350 Buick probably?) with 4 bbl carb that is toast. I assume this has D30 front and D44 rear? He wants to use my spare parts to make a trail rig out of it (due to rust) but the grill may be swapped with Black Jacks (he said it's just the center chrome type and mint condition) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Mar 2002 00:42:25 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: Fwd: 4.0 for sale (RI) From: "dgbjork" Subject: 4.0 for sale (RI) Hi All, I have a 1988 4.0 from a Jeep Comanche for sale. The engine was in my neighbors truck and was driven daily until last winter when the truck was side swiped. Mileage on the truck was 88000. I got the engine after the insurance settlement in hopes of doing a 4.0 head conversion on my 258 (in 1979 J10). It has been over one year and I still haven't gotten around to it - so I figured i would put it out for sale. The head is removed, but has intake, injectors and throttle body on it. Some one else took the wiring harness. The block is as it was in the truck (minus head). I'd like to get $75 for the head and $50 for the block, or take both for $100. I am located in southern Rhode Island (Saunderstown, part of North Kingstown) and will not ship this stuff. I may be willing to drive it to someone within about 50 miles. I certainly could help you get it into your truck....
