Ben Williams '71 Wagoneer '78 F-250 4x4 '88 Bronco ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 May 2002 23:39:27 -0600 From: Michael Shimniok Subject: fsj: Fixing Door Lock Actuators I finally installed one of the new $5 door lock actuator motors. My passenger door lock on both the 85 and 86 have never unlocked when using the driver's switch. This may be an FSJ quirk. Finally fixed after only 5 years. 1. Buy door lock motor from All Electronics (http://www.allelectronics.com) for $5 each. 2. Pull door skin. Use acetone, etc, to clean out the old grease in the door lock mechanism where the detent spring is; it's at the top of the door. Put some new grease in. See if this fixes the problem. If not, proceed. If your detent spring is broken, I was able to get a year out of bailing wire, but doing it over again I'd probably get some steel wire / piano wire from the hardware store. 3. a. Use angle grinder to grind down the two rivets holding on the current door lock motor b. Use a center punch to punch out the center of the rivet. c. Drill out the rivets progressively until they come out. 4. Remove the door lock motor, unplug it. Snip off the connector. 5. Determine how to properly hook up the new motor so it unlocks when the others do: strip off the ends of the old wire and hold 'em against the new motor's connectors and try the door lock switch to test. 6. The kit comes with lengths of new wire and bullet connectors on the end that will plug into the bullet connectors on the new motor. Snip off about 6" of each of these loose wires on the bullet connector end and hook them up to the old wires as appropriate from 5. I like to use uninuslated wire end crimp connectors with shrink wrap over it. 7. Plug in the new motor to the new bullet connectors which are now attached to the old wire. Test fire the motor just to be sure it works correctly. Thread the silvery actuator shaft that came in the kit into the motor. 8. Using the screws supplied in the door lock motor kit and an appropriate sized washer, you can mount the new motor thru the old rivet holes; they are too big for the kits screws, hence the washer. If you have time to come up with a more elegant scheme, feel free. 9. Now clip down the actuator shaft about 4" above the bracket on the door lock rod where the old actuator went through. Put the motor in the up position, the lock in the up position. Bend the actuator rod 90 degrees towards the hole in such a way that the motor doesn't have to extend any farther to push the lock up. Measure carefully before bending. Once bent, feed it through the hole. Now bend it another 90 degrees just past the hole so it is pointing up again. Test fire again and rebend if necessary if it isn't properly locking or unlocking. You're done! I can't believe how quick and simple it was to fix the door lock. Took me about 45-60 minutes. I was a little surprised to find that FSJs already use door lock MOTORS not solenoids. Over time motors are sure to go bad, but it is also possible the lock mechanisms just need a good greasing. Or buy a slightly better GWag or something, esp. with a dead motor, and put the 401 in it. I paid $500 for my '74 Wagoneer, and it was running pretty well when I got it -- just didn't look like much or have seatbelts. (Hmmm, still doesn't...) It was leaking oil, so I had to add a quart every tank or two of gas, but it wasn't burning any oil (except the stuff that dripped on hot exhaust). I ended up getting a rebuilt engine (and sending in the original for the core) when the timing gear broke. Didn't have to, but I wanted to rebuild it anyway, and it was going to be about $400 for the timing gear fix and another $400 to get the oil leaks fixed -- mostly labor, of course -- so I just went ahead and did it then. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't accept rides from strange men, and remember: All men are strange. -- Robin Morgan - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 May 2002 10:01:11 -0700 From: john Subject: Re: fsj: Mt.
