Baynum" Subject: fsj: Help! Need a trail buddy and amt photographer? Well, it seems I will not be able to get my 80 J-10 Honcho, pulled apart and fixed in time for Ouray, at the very least.. It seems that the place I got the engine rebuilt at has a reputation, of building them just enough that when the warranty goes, at the 12 month , or 12 thousand miles, the engine starts to disintegrate, via the pistons.. It seems I should have bout the higher priced engine, built by companies here called "Jasper", and "Grooms" for 500 bucks more.. plus they used aluminum pistons, instead of forged pistons, and claimed they were stock.. and if I had wanted forged , I should have asked... oops.. Like I would know I should ask! So any way.. I am on my knees , begging and pleading for some to show me a good time in Ouray.. ( hey there sailor!!! want a date?!..hehehe..just kidding!) I am hoping to get some photography done , like some landscape shots, on the new fangled Cannon digital camera, we got, the holds like a 100 pics, a 1 gig memory card. really cool thing too, the view screen, does a spin all the way around, 360 degrees, take a pic of your self , and do it via a remote.. with zoom.. I will bring also my traditional Cannon film camera, with tripod and filters. Oh, I will also bring my most valued Pool cue and case, to play some pool. I LOVE to play pool! I play in every town I go to, no matter how small. I play here in the APA league, and I play in the BCA too, I am ranked right now as 4.. ( check out.. http://www.poolplayers.com ) So what do you think? I have a great sense of humor, a big heart, however, I can be rude, obnoxious some times, but only to funny ,.. I love to tease, And if I don't make you snort beer through you nose, because I made you laugh in those three days, then I will give you five bucks! Laughter is truly the best medicine! I am straight forward and honest to a fault, adventurous, and sincere, and a person that goes out of there way to help people when ever and however I can.. I always have something to say because I love good conversation and can talk about anything, but know when to be cool too.. Any way.. please let me know .. I do not want to hang around the old ball and chain and listen to her complain and gripe the the whole time, and tell me what to do all day, while you guys are on the trail.. know what I mean? R.J. A: I'd replace the U-joints. I'm about to attempt this job myself (to prep for Ouray). I believe they are sealed joints. > Q2: what is the best/cheapest/easiest way to service > them? i might think to take them to the local axle > shop? what might i expect to pay? A: Cheapest is always do it yourself but may require tools you could rent if you don't already have them. I've never spent money on axles but it can get expensive depending on what you are doing. For instance, if you put in aftermarket axles that are stronger than the stock Dana ones, you will of course drive the cost up. New bearings and seals would be advisable I think. If you are going to put a lot of power to these in the future, it would be a good time to beef up the axle, but of course you can do the same later while on the vehicle. > i don't plan to put in a front drive shaft for a > while, the rear will be first...once i get this > project driving, i will work out the kinks on the > road, then i'll do the front drive shaft. > > Q3: should i do anything in the pumpkin while the > shafts are out? or can i work on that later without > removing the shafts again? A: You can work on it later but of course, but while it is out, you can get a buddy to help you heft it onto a bench and it is much easier to put in your new OX Locker, ARB air locker - or of course the limited slip differential of your choice..... ;) Good Luck Jeff! > thanks everybody, > jeff > 63 willys wagoneer > so-cal ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jun 2002 20:30:47 -0500 From: "Vince Orr" Subject: fsj: Re: Help! Need a trail buddy and amt photographer? Geeze R.J. You got me crying like a little baby!!!! I'm putting an engine into the Rez - hopefully this weekend - and I just can't stand the thought of a FSJ buddy crying in his beer while the rest of us bust differentials, tie rods, front axles, and various old parts on the trail without you there to share in the grief. I've got a full load otherwise, I'd swing down on the way from Chicago and pick you up but is there anyone else? - --Vince '81 Wagoneer - ----- Original Message ----- From: "R.J. Hunter yes, my friend and I are planning on replicating the doors. He's currently restoring my '83 J10 Stepside and will be acquiring my '67 Panel at a "bargain" price as part of the restoration work. We have aspirations of marketing doors for the Grand Wagoneers, along with other components we're designing for the 4.0L conversion on my J10. :) Stay tuned to these pages for future dreams... :) john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 13:47:00 -0600 From: Michael Shimniok Subject: Re: [fsj: Re: Qs - Front Axle Shafts] "Vince Orr" wrote: > A: Cheapest is always do it yourself but may require tools you could > rent if you don't already have them. For > instance, if you put in aftermarket axles that are stronger than the > stock Dana ones, you will of course drive the cost up. Astronomically. I am putting in a set of early 80's Cherokee Widetrac axles which I had regeared and essentially rebuilt with front ARB they installed and a rear Lock Right which I'll install, plus with rear tubes stitch welded to the housing. Total cost for both was a hair over $2000. Ow. My wallet. Custom aftermarket axles prices I'm not sure about but everything I've seen suggests that you'd be paying twice that. Sure you see TJ axles start at $1500 but they don't make out of the box FSJ axles ... and many custom axles of decent quality run into the $2000-3000 range... some well above that towards $5000. So why'd I gamble $1000 that a rear AMC 20 will hold up? Probably because I'm off my nut. But my theory is that because I tend to go easy on the thin pedal, and because I'm calling it quits with 33's the 20 should hold up just fine. Time will tell. I think a more common rear axle would make more sense... I just happened on a deal and have been able to hoard some WT 20 parts. Michael - --- Michael E. Who needs a tire carrier when you can BOLT the tire to the door using a van tire carrier?? Want the Land Rover look? Bolt a van's ladder to the OTHER door. Having rear electric window problems? Not any more! Tired of rolling the window up and down hefting that tailgate around everytime you want into the back? Voila. TOO cool. Keep us posted! Michael - --- Michael E. Where are we going to find the hinges? We're thinking we could make the doors out of fiberglass, or maybe molded plastic, either one would reduce weight but also eliminate bolting a tire to it. ;) we'll keep you posted, the ONLY reason that curtis has the option to buy the panel is because I know he's got the skills and means to replicate it and make it something that we can market. If we get it figured out I'll be looking at a Diesel conversion for a nice Grand Wagoneer fully loaded... with Panel doors... ;) john meister snohomish, washington At 01:50 PM 6/26/2002 -0600, Michael Shimniok wrote: >john wrote: > > yes, my friend and I are planning on replicating the doors. What all is involved in a 6 to eight swap or vice versa in an FSJ? Is it like an AMC car where the crossmember is different? Is there any difference at all? I've been thinking about stuffing a six into a newer wag, but was wondering what all would be involved. Thanks.
