I was kind enough to lend her the Wag so that she could move her stuff from my house to her new love nest after I caught her with her boyfriend. She was so mad thet the only way she could get back at me was to destroy my prized 1986 Grand Wagoneer (beautiful truck...no rust, 360/727, 3" lift with BFG AT 31x10.5x15 on OEM wheels, leather interior in great shape, WORKING rear window,like-new white exterior with nice woodgrain, no cracks in the grille...looked like it came off the showroom floor and I only paid $4800 for it) This happened in 1996. It cost me $2800 to have it fixed. I borrowed the $$ from a family member and then had to sell the truck so that I could pay back the loan. I cried when the new owner proudly drove it off. I don't think I could ever find a deal like that again...I can only hope and keep looking for another to come along. I had to put a new one on the 360 (1979 block) that lives in my CJ7. To get the old one out, pull (obviously) the oil pan and destroy what is left of the old tube. If you break it off at the block, go get a drill and drill the remainder out of the hole in the block. Just drill the flare from the end of the tube and the rest of the tube will probably just push out of the other side. I didn't have to do this, but I had a drill and 1/2" bit standing by just in case. To get the new one in, you may have to at least loosen the exhaust manifold if not remove it from the engine altogether. You will have to work the thing in by twisting and pushing until you get the right combination of twist, angle, and push. I don't know if this next part is factory-authorized or not, but to seal the thing up, I marked the tube where it meets the block and cut the bent end off of it with a tubing cutter. Then I put the tube back in the block and used a tubing flange tool (the threaded anvil part) against the block and put a flare on the end that is inside of the pan. It seemed to work fine...no leaks there yet...and I emphasize YET...after all, this is an AMC V8 that we are talking about here. Good luck... This should be NP229 not 228. As stated previously, NP228 was available ONLY in 1986. I knew that, but my fingers didn't. Michael - --- Michael E. Will be receiving it on Monday 7/15/02. very cool... how are you sleeping these days? :) I'd be rather annoying to be around waiting for my new toy to show up... :) > As a new owner of a 79 Wagoneer , can you tell me the problems with > putting 35" tires on this jeep. The fsj already has a 4" lift and >31 x 10 BFG's. 31's are a good size, about the largest you'd want to run for economy and good off-road ability. You can also fit them without a lift. With 4" of lift you shouldn't have a great deal of trouble with tires up to about 33 or 34... if you don't go too wide. You may need to trim the fenders to fit for 35's. Take it down to a tire shop and have them mount one. I was able to see that 33x9.5's would fit on an XJ with 2" of lift. :)... barely... I don't encourage large tires because it hurts economy and puts your axles at risk. The larger tires will usually mean fender trimming and axle upgrades. 31x10.5's look good on a lifted FSJ. But it's all doable... If you wheel hard you'll be looking at upgrading the axles... > Also is there any thing I might look at that may be a problem that is > common to this vintage jeep. Go through and replace all the vacuum lines, run synthetic lubricants, clean all the electrical contacts, make sure all the wiring and hoses aren't rubbing and tied up nicely. Clean all the window and lock systems. The rear window can be a royal pain. I've got some info on my website written by others to service the tailgate/window. > Rick > Circle Pines MN Have fun. I'm giving some thought to buying a project '84 (I think it's an '83) Wagoneer Limited with the factory sunroof... the guy is asking $800 but I'm going to offer him $300. The thing has a bad tranny and body and interior damage... I want to convert it to a Diesel or a modern driveline... What I'm really hoping is that he turns down my offer... ;) I don't need another project. ;) john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://wagoneers.com/AMSOIL/Filter_INFORMATION/air_filter-1.jpg http://wagoneers.com/AMSOIL/Filter_INFORMATION/air_filter-2.jpg SJ Jeeps: 360/401: TS-23 258: TS-12 retail $21.50 XJ Jeeps: 4.0L/2.5L('87 and up): TS-29 retail $29.95 WJ Jeeps: 4.7L: TS-104 retail $47.50 DieselBenz: typical S1118 or S1680 retail $32.50 or $39.85 http://wagoneers.com/AMSOIL/ order 1-800-956-5695 cust# 283461 Snohomish, WA, where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #1690 **************************
