There is a good list at http://www.cfsja.org . There may be some ideas that others are missing, also we can appreciate the results more when we meet, like I wanna see/hear Vince's new motor in Rez. 1. Trans fluid and filter chg - Done 2. Xfer case fluid chg - Done 3. Pack outer wheel bearings - in progress, did them all not long ago, and the driver's was dry again and loose! 4. Inspect and consider repair for driver's side steering end link where the tie rod attaches - wore it oblong - what kind of sleeve could I use? 5. Oil pump mods for improved pressure 6. New GMP-1040P water pump from Autozone coming in the mail. 7. Alternator is crooked to engine, and starting to whine. 8. Maybe new AC compressor, I've been without it, we're having a cool summer. 9. Oil and filter and lube chassis. 10. Take out the back seat. 11. Clean/Lube the rear window mechanism. 12. Nuther coat of wax. 13. Touch up paint here and there. 14. Solder connections and reinstall the subwoofer 15. Vacuum. 16. Check/maybe replace the motor mounts. 17. Return PCV system to stock.... 18. Unfortunately I am not (yet) married. :) Fortunately I plan to be in the near future and so I do plan to sell my extra transfer cases. I have an NP229, NP219, and NP228 for sale. Make me an offer on any of 'em. I absolutely won't ship them, but I'd be willing to haul one or two to Ouray and transfer to John or whoever else that's there who can haul 'em to their buyers. Actually I have a number of things for sale. I'll try to remember to post my list here in the near future. Anyone need exhaust manifolds, 2v or 4v manifolds, 4350 or 2150 carbs, egr, alternator, water pump, p/s pump (core), fuel pump or stuff like that? Anyway mine is new and the 75A model; the old one was 'flickering'... not sure what that means, bad regulator? I may use it as a spare since it worked fine otherwise. > 8. Maybe new AC compressor, I've been without it, we're having a cool > summer. We're not. Up in the high country it shouldn't be too bad, but I can't even use the A/C without overheating the truck. On a related note, I am going to have to finish my onboard air install... using dual yorks mounted vertically; one for air, the original for ac. Need to have a machine shop (or somebody) build me a balanced, true water pump pulley with an extra front pulley to run the compressor. I think it should work pretty well. > 9. I broke down and got one of those Coleman electric coolers a couple months ago cuz Amy and I thought it'd be great to never have to mess with ice again.. We were right. :) I like to tie the cooler down to the back seat with a ratchet strap. First time she went four-wheeling with me, she was wondering what she got herself into if I needed to tie down the cooler! But, I think it's a good idea. In the freak chance of a rollover or lots of serious bumps, the last thing I need is a cooler or its contents slapping my skull. :) > 11. Clean/Lube the rear window mechanism. Solder connections and reinstall the subwoofer I'm due for upgrading the rear speakers... the 5" spkrs I got just don't put out diddly for bass, so 6x9's are in the plans... along with plywood or MDF covering the back quarters to enhance bass. I'm toying with the idea of a sub as well, maybe a 10" in each quarter... > 15. Vacuum. I think I'll vacuum mine before Ouray. Didn't order a Tailpad like I was planning. Poop. I desparately need to clean the rear carpet or else find cleaner replacements. It was pristine when I got the truck but all the motors, axles, and other parts and it's... gross. > 16. Check/maybe replace the motor mounts. T'was part of my motor install. > 17. Return PCV system to stock.... Not a bad idea. :) > 18. Retorque exhaust manifold bolts Hm. I should try that. I have a new Y pipe I wanted to put in sometime too... I have a lot more upgrades to finish, too. Finished installing the 6m radio last nite. Hoping to wire up the offroad lites Wed evening thru an overhead switch panel. The list is much larger than this... I'm kind of in a panic trying to figure out how to get it all done (and I insist it ALL has to get done this time cuz I can't "wait until before Ouray" anymore...) :) It might be worth mentioning spares... I think those of us who are inclined should be prepared to sell or give spares to those who didn't and who break down. :) I'm planning on spare alt, water pump, p/s pump, ignition parts, and basic repair stuff like hoses, clamps, duct tape, bailing wire, all my tools, etc... If I remember to get all the extras I still don't have, I should be able to fix most common failures. But since 70% of my truck's mechanicals are rebuilt, I'm hoping that won't be an issue. :) Michael - --- Michael E. Like we always said in Tucson, "What a gonga!" (that means, 'great deal') Slipping trans is probably just linkage or fluid/filter. 8mpg is probably vacuum lines, carb rebuild and slipping trans. No a/c doesn't matter cuz you'll overheat with it on anyway and besides it's prepped for on-board air conversion! Heck, and you've got about 30 days... plenty of time to get 'er ship shape! :D Why would you ever want to drive a 25mpg, air conditioned, comfortable ZJ when you could roll down the miles in this fine piece of precision machinery?? :) Michael - --- Michael E. I didn't tie mine down, I put it behind the back seat (with the seat in sittable position) and ran the cable around the back seat, under the floor mat, around the driver's seat, and up into the cig lighter. It was a long run, but by pointing the plug on the ice chest towards the driver's front, it made it. Like I said, I didn't tie mine down, and even though I wasn't wheeling too hard (I've taken an aerostar on these trails before. What? It's got 4.10 posi in the rear *grin*), the ice chest slid and unplugged itself. Not good. Fortunately I didn't hear the fan when I stopped, so I went back. Warm gatorade/soda/beer is not a good thing when you get to your destination. Tying it down would certainly be a better idea than letting it slide around on shag carpeting :) > I'm planning on spare alt, water pump, p/s pump, ignition parts, and basic > repair stuff like hoses, clamps, duct tape, bailing wire, all my tools, > etc... My jeep box that I take with me to the desert includes: - few u-joints - couple sets of points and condenser (or ignition box for the 77) - spare headlight - jumper cables - jump box freshly charged - spare water pump - spare fuel pump - drum brake kits (the springs and fasteners and adjusters, new addition because a toyota on the last trip had a problem with this and I though to myself how it would suck if I had that problem with a heavier rig) - set of spark plugs, old set of wires (the 77 needed this moreso) - alternator - set of radiator hoses - heater hose patch kit, couple feet of heater hose - couple feet of fuel hose - assorted clamps for above hoses - set of belts - old skewl tire patcher (for when the spare gets a flat) - spare lug nuts - few quarts of oil - couple quarts of ATF - transfercase/qtrac oil, manual tranny oil - can of bar's leaks - couple rolls of FW Steel (JB Weld on PCP) - DC/AC inverter (for charging HT batteries while you're driving, or for charging jump box because you needed to use it) - 110v air compressor (small one that has lots of power) - tire pressure gauge - wheel bearings and some grease I have spare axle shafts but usually leave them at home because they don't fit in the box and I tend to forget them. There's probably a couple things I'm forgetting on the list. I got in the habit of carrying way more parts than necessary because I don't run a blazer with a 350 chevy, and hate waiting for parts to arrive in a strange town. > If I remember to get all the extras I still don't have, I should be able to > fix most common failures.
