RJ is right, it's time to get a new pump. This is a good job for a weekend mechanic. I got it done one Saturday. While this is fresh in my mind, here's what I did. 1. Order a GMP aluminum pump from Autozone online. I spent too much, there is a cheaper version available, I think Jim quoted $30+core at Shucks? If you get the GMP pump(brand new, not rebuilt), you may need the two bushings, 3/8"ID, 5/8" long and 1"+ a washer long. 2. Paint the new pump. (I didn't do this, but it would've been pretty...) 3. Drain the coolant. If you can loosen the plugs on either side of the block, towards the back, so much the better. I put a garden hose on the exit end of the heater core to backflush (don't know if this is effective, but makes me feel better. 4. Add a bottle of radiator flush. Refill the system. Drive around for 20 minutes or so with the heater on. 5, Park where you want to work on the truck. Drain the coolant. 6. I worked from the vehicle left side to the right to undo, then from right to left to install. 7. Remove fan, belts, hoses. Loosen and rotate out of the way the AIR pump and the alternator. The triangular alternator bracket has to be rotated, giving access to the compressor bolts. 8. Loosen the bolts for the compressor so it can be slid forward.(1/2" is plenty) 9. Remove the small (7/16"hexhead) bolts around the water pump. 10. Remove the larger (9/16"hexhead) bolts around the hose connections. 11. Tap the pump loose with a hammer and a short 2x4 12. Remove the pump, note that it will have to slide to the right (vehicle left) to get out from behind the compressor bracket. 13. Scrape the pump housing to front cover mating surface clean. Wiping this with mineral spirits helps to reveal the remaining gasket material. 14. Coat both sides of the new gasket with RTV Blue (I had the Silver tube, seems like good stuff) Place this on the new pump, add a couple of the small screws, and put it in place. Finger tighten the small screws to ensure the gasket has not slipped. 15. Retighten the compressor bolts, reposition the alternator and replace its bolts. 16. Retighten the AIR pump bolts. 17. Put the pulley back on the water pump 18. Install the belts and hoses. 19. Install the fan. 20. Let it sit overnight. 21. Add water. Drive, check for leaks, drain the water, add coolant/water mix. Geez, I hope I didn't miss anything. - - Landon - ----------------------------- Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 13:52:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Alexander Wall < alxndr13-at-yahoo.com > Subject: Re: fsj: GMP Water pump on! This post reminds me - My Waggy seems to have a pretty severe leak from the back of the water pump. How hard is it to replace seals on this guy? Or would it be a replacement of the whole pump? That, on top of my Haynes manual, should give me all the info I need! Is GMP a brand-name, or a higher-volume pump? Whenever I have to replace a component, I try to get a higher-performing replacement. Thanks again, Alex > 1. Order a GMP aluminum pump from Autozone online. A: Today my oldest son, my wife and her dad went for a drive to BC and brought me back a present. My 5" rear lift springs for Black Jack are finally here! Made by Mcallister Springs of Langley, BC, they cost me $380 (that's what happens when you put things off and are in a hurry!) so my old ones are going in the for sale pile. (they may be beefed slightly. There is a thick base leaf I didn't see in others) The more things change, the more they stay insane! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jul 2002 23:29:12 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: Alternator A: Alex, you can use a 7294 from Schucks (94 amp) or get the chrome universal 100 amp one. You may need to re-clock it, but they work fine. I still have A/C (though it doesn't work), so the only spot available is the present location, below the A/C compressor. There is a ton of room around the alternator itself, but the pivot bracket is a fixed length. I'm going to take my existing one in to compare all the dimensions. Thanks! Still, it only cost me $400 for what I got instead of $500. I'm going to take their advice though and flip my rear shackle. Maybe before Ouray! Hi Jim Thanks for visiting our web sight . The springs we build are custom made for your jeep from the weight info and how you plan to use it . The cost of the 3" fronts are 170.00 each side and the rears would need to be a 8" to match the front and they would cost 245.00 each spring .They come with bushings and take about 4 weeks to build . On the rear you might look at changing the rear hanger setup so the shackle hangs down this might help in the flex and cut down on the lift that is needed .
