All diagnostics say system is fine. Started looking under the dash and found that the switch at the bottom of the column was melted. Soooo I managed to find a new switch and put that on. Crossed my fingers and you guessed it! Nothing. Just runs the starter. Distributor seems to be turning, diagnostic verifies that the pickup coil is working. Near as I can tell, all components are working. I'm going to test the brainbox again tomorrow. I'm starting to think it may be bad, even though it is new out of the box. Today, I took apart the wiring harness. All wires look real good. I traced both the resistor type wires and they look fine. I tested the one for the coil and it checked out with continuity and read exactly 1.35 ohms like it is supposed to. I don't think that is the problem. Really running out of ideas at this point. - --Vince '81 Wagoneer ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Aug 2002 20:54:09 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: fsj: Ouray gathering The original FSJ guys were in Ouray, well, 3 out of 4. :) John Meister, Michael Baxter and Ken Wetherall. Have you pulled a plug to see if it is firing blue sparks? I hesistate to ask, but I don't recall you mentioning that... If the plugs are firing a nice bright blue, the next thing would be to come up with a brilliant idea to determine if the fuel is actually being delivered in the cylinders. If there is fire in the hole AND fuel, it's just got to start and run for at least a second or two unless the timing chain is broken or something... Maybe you should pull all the plugs, shoot an eyedropper full of gas into each one and put them back in and see what happens when you fire it...? I'm going to try to dig out the notes for those that have asked, but it may be tomorrow before I can get it done, but it sounds like you have covered the bases re: the resistor wire, etc... but I think a lot of us are dying to hear the end of this saga... it's a weird one... Resistor wire they call it! I sure could use thatpart number!! Ok guys, I'm messed up tonight and not ready for sleeping right now anyway... but more on that later... here's some notes re: what I did troubleshooting Under Construction. I hooked up a timing light to #1 and taped the trigger so it stayed on. I hooked up a voltmeter to the coil+ so I could monitor that. The idea was that I wanted to see if the coil was dropping dead at the same time the spark was... in my case, it did not. The spark died, but the coil+ stayed hot. This gave me SOME idea about the failure anyway. Something that I never did do, but wondered about was finding a way to monitor the ECU signals while monitoring the coil- side. To see if they died together or separately. Also I put on a glass fuel filter so I could monitor that and be sure the fuel is getting to the carb anyway. I eventually replaced the harness because the resistor wire showed 0ohms resistance, at some point when I got around to measuring it. So at that point in time, I discovered it was shorting to ground in the harness at least occasionally. It was the LAST thing I replaced to keep it running. Been running for 2 years now, so I can safely say that it was bad. At some point I did try a bypass wire with a 1.1ohm ballast resistor off the firewall of my Comanche. Will report the part number for that if anyone is interested, but it is out there in the yard under a cover that I will be happy to check if someone really wants to know... The harness I got from Specialty Parts. 800-227-3848 Cost was $392.00 and $30.00 shipping. Manufacturers tag shows: Unlimited Services of Wisconsin Part# 56003641 Rev A US 10-26-98 Here are a couple of .jpgs that may be helpful... of course if someone on the list wants a copy, you'll have to ask since they'll be stripped at the server... If you think I can do anything else to help... just ask... JeepNut Joe H Lawrence wrote: > > JeepNut, > Are you sure you haven't been driving my J10????
