None to be had in AMC cars after '74 AFAIK. There were 2 401 cranks. '70/'71 was made for the Borg Warner automatic (which self destructed when someone hammered the go pedal too much) and '72 up have the crank sleeve installed for the TH400 in trucks, because it was bored out to fit 727 torque converter noses ion AMC cars. The bolt pattern is slightly different, as is the balance between early and late cranks. From: Ken Gaines Subject: RE: fsj: 401 flywheel wanted Scott, Sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this. I have been up and down the coast of Texas for the last 3 weeks or so. I called my friend here and he doesn't have the manual tranny flywheel for a 401. His originally had the TH400 behind it. He also said that there were scarcely any Jeeps with a 401 and manual tranny BUT that there WERE manual trannies behind 401 mills in the AMC muscle cars of the 60's and 70's. Try looking there if you haven't already found what you need. I am about to do yet ANOTHER engine upgrade in my 1980 CJ7. I have in my possession a TBI equipped GM 454 and the original TH400 tranny. When I can cough up the $$ for an Atlas t-case, that combo...along with the Ford front and rear axles...is going ion my CJ7. WOOHOO!!! Good luck with the swap... Unfortunately, we also saw a lot of road kills on the way. On the way up I saw a bear (and what was left of the car that hit it) on the Snoqualmie pass, then a cougar on the side of the road in my lane. Various small animals that were hard to tell what they were (except the skunks) but the worst was the amount of deer that were hit. We saw a doe on the pass, then when we were coming back from the FSJ picnic, we saw another get hit across our lane into the ditch from someone coming up the hill too fast near the peak. On the way home, a car screamed past us the opposite way in the dark (near the Wyoming border) with only 1 headlight. After it passed, we rounded a corner and saw a HUGE buck on the road. Too big for the 3 of us to move past the shoulder, but I made sure it was dead and not suffering (same with the others) We flashed lights at the oncoming traffic to alert them after we drove through a herd along the highway a little further (they weren't scared of us, but did move to the shoulder as we came through) Bottom line: Be careful out there! If you tend to drive fast at night, put those cheapo $5 deer whistles on your rig. No-one that I know of has been hit or hit one so far. From: john Subject: fsj: today in and around Ouray http://www.wagoneers.com/ouray/Aug15-john-Ouray-day1/ went to 4 corners and Mesa Verde today... coming back north on 550 saw 8 deer and 1 very large racoon. :) john ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 20:18:54 -0500 From: "Vince Orr" Subject: fsj: Re: Re: FSJ Picnic - Ouray 2002 You mean drive way out to SLC, and THEN tow a trailer to Seattle? Not sure about MSD ignition. Jacobs wires are great, but not their ignition modules. Avoid the K&N filters, they're over priced, a pain to clean, expensive, and don't filter well. The Amsoil filters are a much better. The trailer is about 3500 lbs empty (probably 4200 loaded). Will this baby do the job? It has a factory towing package with trans cooler etc. The engine is a 360 but I have absolutely no history on the vehicle so I have no idea what was done to it. The cat and pollution gear looks like it is removed, as is the gas tank and spare tire (propane tanks sit here now). I am in th e process of tweaking it for maximum power (short of an engine rebuild). Some say you will lose about 10% power with propane. Others say if it was desided strictly as a propane engine during the install it should be fine. Any suggestions or comments? I am planning on new free-flow exhaust system (Magnaflow), K&N filter, possibly new MSD ignition system. >--> >-->FSJ newbie >--> >-->Dalan Hawker >-->British Columbia, Canada >--> >-->-----Original Message----- >-->From: john [mailto:john-at-wagoneers.com] >-->Sent: Tuesday, August 20, 2002 9:46 PM - ----------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://www.wagoneers.com/john AMSOIL synthetics & filters, Hastings filters and now BOSCH!!!! http://www.wagoneers.com/AMSOIL/ To order 1-800-956-5695 customer# 283461 Snohomish, WA, where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... http://www.wagoneers.com/AMSOIL/FSJ_filters.html http://www.wagoneers.com/AMSOIL/Filter_INFORMATION/air_filter-1.jpg - ----------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 18:15:00 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: fsj: Re: Re: FSJ Picnic - Ouray 2002 On Wed, 21 Aug 2002, Vince Orr wrote: >-->You mean drive way out to SLC, and THEN tow a trailer to Seattle? >-->You don't know how tempting that really is!
