From: john Subject: fsj: Re: rims thanx for the amsoil business. as far as the rims the world is wide-open. :) They're "standard" six lug rims... Chevy, Toyota, etc... just about any 6-lug rims will work. The only issue, and not a big one, is the offset. I've run white spoke rims from a Toyota. Rims from a Chevy and rims from older FSJs. SuperDawg has the slotted mags from a mid-70's FSJ. :) I never can keep track of what the 6-lug dimension is but I know it's the same for a wide variety of vehicles. Any tire shop should recognize it and provide a number of options. So, start browsing the catalog and see what they have, just don't tell 'em what you're driving... ;) BTW, Discount Tires has always been a great place for me. Excellent service and generally good prices. :) FWIW, I have a complete set of the six lug slotted mags like are on http://wagoneers.com/superdawg and I'm heading down to LA next month... have room in the wife's WJ... :) ttyl, john meister At 02:13 PM 9/5/2002 -0400, Mike Morgan wrote: >Hi John, >It has been awhile since I have communicated with you, I had bought some >Amsol filters months ago for 1990 Grand Wagoner. > >I have a question I hope you can help with. >One thing I wanted to do was upgrade the rims on my 1990 GW, to improve the >look and because the original rims are aluminum and all pitted, causing >constant leaking. >shees gonna be sweeeeet john!

he was nice before, just getting better... :)

the goal was to improve fuel efficiency and reliability,
and an automatic trans (although I did like the T-5, it
was "weak" but had good ratios... under towing load I could
tell that it wouldn't take much to break it... that
and my lower back was injured in the Army and shifting most
cars results in problems... although SJs and VWs seem to
be ok for the most part.)

While he had some rust spots in weird places, probably from
trees dropping sap, he was cleaner then the alleged 12,000 mile
truck. Of course Curtis being from California thinks any rust
is a bad thing and points to various surface rust and is concerned.
I think we need to chip in and get Curtis an all expense paid trip
to Chicago to look at vehicles that live there... rofl... of course
he's probably been there and seen it first hand, but trust me, after
a couple years out here on the west coast you forget... I was appalled
at the rust issue in Salt Lake City... I saw a '78 (donor vehicle
for my son's transmission) with door skins and fenders rotted away and
learned that they are actually using the brine from the Great Salt Lake
on the roads in the winter! Thankfully out here in Oregon and Washington
we either can't afford salt or our "leaders" are smart enough to know
that sand works just as well, better perhaps... There are places in
snow country like Montana and South Dakota and Wyoming I think, that
don't salt the roads... We should compile a list of places where salt
is used, and then a list of places where rust is an issue just because
of the environment. I mean vehicles in Florida seem to rot away pretty
quick too, and last I checked they don't use salt on the roads in winter... ;)

>will everything in the new dash panel work?

absolutely. we're using the '96 XJ wiring harness. we'll
have to move the idiot lights off somewhere else as the SJ
dash panel isn't as wide as the XJ. Also we'll need to
relocate the SJ heater controls. I chose to keep them
as opposed to using the XJ vacuum controls. The cables
used in the SJ are simple. I'd like to keep the heater
controls AWAY from my passenger (as she's usually cold and
always cranks whatever heater is near by way up baking me
alive... ;)

>does the older speedo cable attach to it?

no, the newer unit uses an electronic pickup.

it's Cocoa Brown... seen it before on the J20... can't
think of anything else familiar... except to the J20 and
Michael Baxter's '79, it's a different color then the
Dk driftwood poly, but still a nice brown color. :)

>The quality looks similar too ;) in the close up shot.

quality? I hope we get better quality.. rofl...

I couldn't believe the ignorance I heard yesterday... some
big dufus comes up and says, that's got the 360 huh? Another
guy and I were looking and said yeah... he says, it's a Ford.
The other guy and I say, no, AMC. He backed down after two
more denials, but I didn't think to tell him that AMC used
Ford ignition parts...

Looking at those pictures carefully underneath that truck
there is no way on this planet that this vehicle only has
12,000 miles... The dealer in Olympia had a silent bid of
$4k on this thing... I wonder if they believed the auctioneer
or checked it out first... the auctioneer was citing paperwork
from the brotherinlaw... I noticed on the door jamb an oil
change in '89 with 08xxx miles on it... but from '75 until
'89 is a long enough time to easily rack up 108k... One
look at the 8,000 mile J20 proved to me that those folks up
there were deluding themselves and basically ripped off the
bidder for about $2,000. It was a nice truck and I would
have bought it for $2,500 with the blessings of my spouse,
but $4,500 was absurd.

Subject: fsj: New home for the Judge

Hey guys,

Well, it finally happened... I am FSJ-less. My wife had had enough of The
Judge, and insisted I get a newer vehicle that she felt comfortable driving,
too, so I have a 2000 GMC 1500 Sierra.

However, The Judge is still in the family: I gave it to my cousin, Jason,
who'll be joining this list shortly. He's 25 and he's never driven anything
bigger than a Nissan pickup before :) Boy's got a man's truck now!

I'm going to stay on the list 'cause I still love FSJs, but I want to take
the opportunity to say "Thank you" to everyone on this list who's helped and
shared knowledge and kindness with me over the past six years. You guys are
all awesome. Special thanks to John, Jim and Michael for being so patient.
