One guy paid $23,500 for a restored 1991 GW, (three times book value). Damon Kessler on Whidbey says he spent $5k last year on parts for his 1981 Wagoneer. They don't mention that was just to fix the rear window. I'm already figuring out how to tow it home, not a good sign... ;) I'm also looking at a 300CD down there... I think I'll come back without anything in tow, especially if the better half has her way, which she usually does... ;) Mike is on my xj list and posted it there, he's got to get $1,800 for it, and the buyer on ebay backed out... The auxillary tank and new tires(?) are probably worth getting the Jeep... I think it has tranny troubles... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1852048303 john t 01:19 PM 9/13/2002 -0700, Mike - G wrote: "Mike - G" >1,800 is as low as I'll go. If he needs 3.31 gears for a D44, I have a good used set for $25 (from my front axle I swapped 4.10 into) As for axles, the Wagoneer and narrow track Cherokee from '80 to '83 are the best fit. Previous ones are offset to the RH side. (Speaking of, my son is parting his 66-68 Wagoneer this week. Cab you believe the early D44 had 2 piece axles?) I still have my '84 J10's Model 20 (I'm going to check, because the front was 3.31) From: john Subject: fsj: Re: [FSJparts] Rear End At 09:28 AM 9/13/2002 -0700, Myotismon wrote: >I need a new rear end for my 87 Grand Wag. IF you look on the back of the cover there should be two numbers. 40 and 20 just doesn't sound right... There were only two gearsets used in GW's, 2.72 and 3.31. Typically gears with 2.72 ratios (pretty standard for '80s FSJs), would have have 49 teeth ring & 18 pinion. 49/18= 2.72 You'll have to find the two numbers on your diff covers, fore or aft axles, both should have them stamped along with other unintelligable codes. :) In '87 you could have the Dana 44, I think that was the year they started using them again. From '80 until '86 or maybe later, they used the Model 20 rear end. The AMC has a large round cover. >Hanes manual wasnt to helpful. you think? rofl... it's better then Chilton's. Narrow track Cherokees and Wagoneers. There will be some variations over the years. I'm trying to decide which R&P to use on my J10 project for the best fuel economy. Performance is desired, but a distant second... I'm putting a '96 Cherokee 4.0L HO engine and Aisin Warner 4 speed automatic into my '83 J10 Stepside. (it previously had a 258 (4.2L) with a T-5 and 3.31 gears). Running either 235's or 31's tires. The '96 XJ Cherokee the engine came out of had 3.55's. I'm planning on swapping the Model 20 rear axle for a Dana 44. The rear Dana 44 has 4.10s in it right now. I also have access to a set of 3.54's for a Dana 44. The benefit of using Dana 44's in going with OX LOCKERS or ARBs. I also have the 4.10's out of my '75 J10 (that's where the rear Dana 44 is coming from). So, the question is: FOR THE BEST FUEL ECONOMY AND then for OVERALL PERFORMANCE, WHICH GEAR RATIO do you recommend: a.) 3.31 b.) 3.54 c.) 3.73 d.) 4.10 notes: a.) requires obtaining 3.31s for a rear D44 b.) have D44's and D44 R&P's (two R&P swaps) c.) DO NOT HAVE R&P for this ratio... $+$ d.) have a pair of D44's with this ratio, HOWEVER, the front axle has the wrong drop, will need to swap R&P in front. I guess my least painful options are 3.54s or 4.10s. http://www.wagoneers.com/SuperDawg/DawgYear2002/J10-axle-ratios.htm I didn't run the numbers on 4.10's... or 3.73's. However I have the numbers here: http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/tech/GEARING/ and of course the formula here: http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/tech/GEARING/gears.html (I know about the on line calculators, but feel free to post the link for others if you must... ;) Anyway, the Aisin Warner has a .75 overdrive so the 4.10's might not be a bad way of going... not really sure though... I want the fuel economy... The J10 will mainly be used to drive back and forth to work... about 14 miles one way, stop and go somewhat, average speed around 40 mph... thanx for the ideas... and let me know if you know any good sources for the OX or ARB lockers... and which you'd recommend. Since I'll be running an NP219 Quadratrac unit I want to keep the axles "open" for street use, also works better on ice and snow... but still have lockers for serious wheeling... later, john meister - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Sep 2002 16:00:30 -0700 From: john Subject: fsj: Washington State wins case!
