My '99 WJ requires COPPER core plugs. They erode rather quickly, but my fuel economy is superb on this thing. I talked to Jim Startup about it and he says that the Bosch Platinums are pretty bad, but the NGK platinums are fine. I'm thinking of trying the NGK's next time around... Theoretically both plugs should provide more then adequate spark for the fuel/air mixture. The difference is that the platinums do not erode the same as the copper cores. So the copper plugs will have increased gap during use... The only explanation for his loss of fuel economy is he bought his platinums at schucks... just kidding... he probably got the Bosch, which my mechanic despises. I tried the platinums in the little wagoneer, Bosch, and I did notice a drop in economy, but didn't associate it with the plugs until you mentioned this. I think there is something going on with Platinum plugs, but I'm not sure what it is either... the fuel/air mixture theory doesn't seem to make sense... because if he wasn't burning the fuel completely his mileage should go down... right? john At 03:56 AM 9/20/2002 +0000, fsj-digest wrote: >Date: Wed, 18 Sep 2002 18:06:07 -0700 >From: "Jim B" >Subject: fsj: interesting note on fuel economy > >I had an old guy come into my store and ask for the regular spark plugs for >his '89 Ford 300 6 cyl with EFI. When I first joined the group 6 years ago, John's first advice was "change all your hoses... and do it once a year." I can tell you from experience that nasty vacuum leaks caused by dried out hoses will make your FSJ run like a kerosene well pump. Even if they seem tight... they're not. Go to Pep Boys and get 2 rolls of 5/16", 2 rolls of 7/16" and one roll of 3/16", and sit down with a sixer for an afternoon... and don't forget the box of colored vacuum plugs :) Clark Novak Jeepless in San Diego > Date: Wed, 18 Sep 2002 15:24:05 -0700 > From: Tesar Landon-r16884 > Subject: [none] > > Date: Tue, 17 Sep 2002 09:20:50 -0700 > Jeff, > > I suggest you try a slightly higher float level. and check all > your vacuum hoses/ports, and maybe a slightly higher idle speed, > and a little more timing advance. I replaced all my ignition components at 30k rpm on my '98 TJ 4.0L (coil plugs rotor cap wires). The plugs were Autolite Platinums gapped to 40 thou. But i was using a higher output coil than stock. When i drove it the following week I was getting very bad vibrations any time during heavy load (climbing hill, accelerating, etc). On a whim i switched from 87 to 89 octane gas and the vibrations were minimized! (but not gone!) I asked arround and this is what somebody pointed me to... http://www.automotivearticles.com/get.php?action=getarticle&articleid=18 Of note is the mention about platinum plugs: "These are great all-around plugs, particularly for use on NA engines, and they should last a very long time. Very high heat engines should probably not use them because the sharper tips may not conduct enough heat away to prevent pre-ignition under adverse conditions. " Two things could have, and still might be my problem. 1) gapping is to large. Doubtful but possible. Misfire situation in which the spark gets snuffed out since the load conditions usually are when the throttle is 75% open (more than normal). 2) most likely, since changing the octane changes the flash point, it's possible the platinum plugs arent cooling off fast enough since the platinum can't wick the heat away nearly as well as copper. This tends to support the copper debate discussed on the list here.
