A far cry from today, where they do everything they can to make sure you don't tamper. I like being able to "tamper" so I can set it to 0 for the new engine. Ok, you can, but I suggest you don't. 1. Threads are coarse. OEM threads are fine. 2. Made in Korea. 3. NAPA has Balkamp for $1.50 more than Autozone. 4. Threads are small? the nuts I have are loose. 5. They don't come with replacement nuts. Also I'm mad because I can't get my wrench on the upper bolt inside the motor mount on the passenger side. will buy a 90 degree knuckle tonight and give it another shot, otherwise, must undo at the frame and at the block, not looking forward to that! Looks like AMC/Willys expected us to replace the motor mounts before putting the exhaust manifold on.... - - Landon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 17:12:47 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: fsj: Re: fsj-digest V1 #1753 >--> >-->Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 07:43:59 +1000 >-->From: "Veijo Phillips" >-->Subject: fsj: 229 vs 219 >--> >-->Well I finally found (well thought I found) a reco 229 for my 83 cherokee. >-->Paid the $$$ and had it shipped down. I believe the 219 is more durable then the 229, offers a high lock (emergency drive) and of course low range, but no 2wd mode. john meister remote from Los Angeles... fixing to get on I-5 tomorrow... :) HP World is going on down here... pretty cool... - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://www.wagoneers.com/UNIX/ --> Please don't leave life without Jesus <-- for solid PC computing, try LINUX: http://www.wagoneers.com/UNIX/LINUX UNIX rules the internet and engineering computing - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 18:39:44 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: 229 vs 219 A: Measure yours to see. You may have to swap yokes, but it should be a bolt in on the front end. It may be a different length, but even the low range gears and viscous coupler are the same part number (that info from a guy that works for New Process. He pointed me in the direction of Mountain Engineering IIRC, that made the NV 241 OR with 4:1 low range for aftermarket. Mine was supposed to get tested in Ouray as it's rated for 800 ft lbs of torque, but alas, UPS held my parts back too long! From: "Veijo Phillips" Subject: fsj: 229 vs 219 Well I finally found (well thought I found) a reco 229 for my 83 cherokee. Paid the $$$ and had it shipped down. However when I opened the box I noticed that it only had one selector arm and a funny little switch on top. After consulting my manual I came to the conclusion that this must be a 219 (quadratrack). bummer. I spoke to the guy I bought it off, who was just a tad embarresed. he's now offered to build me up a proper 229. Just as a matter of interest would the 219 bolt directly in??? the housing and everthing look pretty much the same, the only thing that I can see that would require adjustment it the selector lever in the car. Jim,

Sometimes I purposely don't pass the email address
along because the person is asking me
for help and I really don't think it's right to publicize
someone's address like that, usually... other times I do,
it's a judgment call. Since this guy didn't do English well,
bombarding him with emails from folks he doesn't know didn't
seem like a good idea... :) besides, the rods you have probably
won't work for him either... ;)
