Subject: Need Help Saving a GW in Pocatello, Idaho!! Message-ID: <20021020.100708.-504949.5.t-warren-at-juno.com> From: "T. Warren" I've got a real good friend with an '86 Grand Wagoneer (360/727/NP229)... I've mentioned him and his Jeep a few times on this List before... Anyway - I got a disturbing email from him the other day - Part of it reads: "I'm seriously considering parting out my Jeep. I'm never going to have the money to fix it, and it's just sitting there rotting. Plus, I could really use the cash. What do you thing the chances of selling stuff are, and do you think I could make a little money? If I were to do this, I was wondering if you'd be willing to help? Anyway... any information you could give me on what is involved... like shipping to people, prices, stuff like that... would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to give her up, but I just don't see any way for me to fix her before she rots." I discussed the issue to him and emphasized the point that shipping any of the parts of this beast would not be cheap and most likely wouldn't be cost-effective (except for maybe the trim pieces)... Problem 1: He works long hours at the radio station and doesn't have time to devote to the Jeep... Problem 2: He is not stupid, but he is not real mechanically inclined either... Problem 3: He would need help from other people to put this beast back on the road and the only person he knows that is halfway capable of doing it is me (well, he does know somebody else who could, but this other guy's never around when you need him)... Problem 4: He lives 30 miles from me and I don't have much time either, especially since I work the Graveyard shift and my sleeping schedule is FUBAR... I would, of course, do whatever I could to help him complete this task... He had just bought a nicely-rebuilt 360 shortblock from TSgt James Johnson from the Mountain Home AFB and he has a pair of earlier hi-comp heads and headers that came off a 360-powered Gremlin... Everything is there (except gaskets), just need to put it together... I think I've pretty much talked him into keeping the beast until, at least, next summer... Maybe then, we could figure out a way to get it going... Either that or modify his '72 Hornet to accomodate the 360... Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? I'd hate to see him part with this Jeep since he really likes it and has had a lot of fun with it in the past... BTW: If he still decides to part it out, I've got dibs on the transfer case for my Eagle!! Thanks! I spent a long, long time troubleshooting Old Blue thinking that it couldn't possibly be the starter, after all the PO said he'd just replaced it... Finally, after hours of trying stuff I was talking to a buddy and he said, it sounds like the starter... and I said, well, ok, I'll try it... sure enough, it was the starter... and I've found over 20 FSJs that these things eat starters like some cars eat windshield wiper blades... :) FSJ's (with 360's primarily) also eat vacuum lines. It should be an annual ritual, replace starter and vacuum lines... or wait till the starter goes and replace vacuum lines... and, if you don't get a superb quality spark plug wire (like Jacobs wires - not their coils though) you'll be replacing them too... must be the heat from these boat anchors, eh? ;) >I wanted to clear up that I wasn't in >the Army. I have a '74 Wagoneer with a 401, and I'm in the process of getting a rebuilt engine installed. After seeing your pages, I love all the info and pics, but I noticed the pics on the 401 page ( http://www.jeeptech.com/engine/amc401.html ) are rather small and of a more "used" engine. So I took pics of my freshly rebuilt engine when it came back yesterday in case you have any interest. You're welcome to use any or all of the pics, and I'm not even concerned with credit. You can edit them however you want (or ask me to, especially if it's just downsizing or if you need thumbnails or something). I also won't be offended if you don't want to use them. All pics are 1600x1200, and only a few came out blurry. Generally, the ones with a "1" at the end of the filename were taken with the flash, and "2" were without (hence the blurriness of some of them -- I should've used the tripod). The flash pictures are probably better overall; the comparative darkness of the background even makes the engine stand out a bit more. Anyway, the pics are at: http://129.186.79.84/FSJ/AMC401/ There's also an AMC401.zip file in that directory that has all the pics in one archive for easier downloading. I do request that you don't link anything directly to that server, though; it's my work machine, and not officially for private use. (And I may not leave the pics there long-term.) I'm also cc:ing this to the digest.net FSJ list for two reasons -- so they can also grab the 401 pics if they want, and to let everybody know about jeeptech.com if you didn't already. Also need some advice. I was going to ask $2,700 obo. Am I way off here? It seems high compared to the ones I read about in the paper but I am also unsure of their relative condition. The first one had stuff wrong; I heard a knocking, took it in several times even though it was running fine and the noise wasn't obnoxiously loud, and they ended up finding a partially-frozen joint or something that had already caused scoring on the cylinder wall and stuff. This was with less than a year and less than 2000mi on the engine. So the new work is all under warranty. Anyway, they ended up reworking the same block again. That's the one I took pics of yesterday and just sent the email about a little bit ago. The guy at the shop said it's 0.060 over. I thought I read a few places that they don't advise going over 0.040 with the 401, but this was done professionally, and he said they actually quote the 0.040 number on just about every engine. I'm still going to find out details about the warranty, of course. :) So that works out to 412.7ci displacement, or a 6.67L: http://www.jeeptech.com/engine/amc401.html http://www.sarcasmracing.com/wish/Tech/displacement.html (Take the stats from the first page, add 0.060 to the bore, and plug them into the displacement calculator -- which I wrote myself a few years back, using formulas supplied by the friend who wanted it. 4.225 x 3.68 x 8 --> 412.7ci | 6.67L.) Also of interest is that the gears I thought were pretty low in the '74 have tags for a 3.08 or 3.09 (whatever's available on those; I don't remember which it was). So we're going to test to see if those are really the gears in there. If they are, I might replace them with 3.54s or 3.73s someday. Considering the power it already has, that'll make it a very impressive beast. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, you guys working for NASA? Huh?
