A: Front and rear carriers are the same. Gears that were used in the front will have less wear than those from the back (most of the time) From: Dan Black Subject: fsj: D44 spline count (thanks!) Thanks to all those who helped with the spline count on the D44 ('88 GWag). Sounds like it should definitely be 30. And I won the auction I was going for, barely (my high bid was less than $5 more): http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1870650593 3.54 with posi. The guy even said it's from an '87 GWag; were these an option from the factory? I also won this auction earlier: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1863120642 ...but only one of the sets showed up. (We're pursuing UPS since it was insured.) From what he said, it sounds like the front and rear are identical. Is that correct; can I use the one I got in either differential? (Since I'll be getting the posi, the other that I already got would then go in the front, of course.) - - - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -- A good way to deal with predators is to taste terrible. - - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org - -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 09:26:08 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: Re: Tail Lights A: I had a 1970 Maverick with 170 cu in 6 cyl and 3 in the tree shifter (3 sped std on the column) that I bought for $25 (owner couldn't get it running and after 5 so-called mechanics tried to get it running, called it DOA). I told him it was just the ignition condenser, but he said it still had spark. I cranked it, and it was yellow spark, so I popped in the spare condenser I used to pack with me and drove it home. I drove it for about a year, then picked up a '75 Ford van that had a dying 300 6 cyl. I sold it for core (got what I paid for the van back out of it) My sons and I went up Sumas mtn with the Maverick and came home with a Sumas mtn road racing trophy (our muffler in the trunk and rear springs poking through the floor!) That made it just a little easier to pull the motor, and I got the converter and bellhousing as well as flexplate and starter from a Fairmont 200 6 cyl (and the power steering brackets plus the distributor) and plugged that little 170 into the heavy 1/2 ton van. It had LOTS more power than the original 300 (which was VERY tired) and I hauled all sorts of delivery stuff around BC, including 1 ton of insulation to a job site in Cache creek, where I learned how to install that itchy stuff (made $1000 that weekend) I sold that van and got a sweet '80 IH 1210 pickup (picture John's truck with IH cab in black with AMC 6 cyl, 5 speed 1 ton trans and D60 front and rear with -at-35" tires) Still on the subject of vans though, I had one customer (a berry farmer) that had a Chev van that kacked a bunch of smallblocks over the years. I finally replaced it with a 232 from an AMC Pacer and he was much happier as it had more power and better gas mileage. I haven't been out there for a couple years, but next time I do, I hope he still has it so I can get a photo for my "past projects" album! From: john Subject: fsj: Re: Tail Lights remember that the Maverick surfaced shortly after the Pinto. In fact, there is a Maverick sitting up in my field, my neighbor's wife is keeping it as a memento of her grandfather... it's slowly being covered with moss, mold, but very little rust... The filler neck out the back doesn't mean those are necessarily maverick taillights btw, still could be pinto... ;) same part really... The 2.0L was a decent engine, made by Ford in Germany (big presence there), the 2.3L's had some problems with their overhead cams... I lunched one on the Autobahn... it's part of the reason that SAE created the SE oil rating... seems like overhead cams stretch the limits of lubrication, same thing happened with the original 230 used in the original SJ, oil was pretty humble back then, and without Amsoil synthetics to turn to Jeep had to replace it with the AMC 232... ;) john ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 17:19:27 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: golden eagle... putting up the pix I took of the '79 Golden Eagle I'm trading for my parts J20 truck... it has a 304 in it, bad QT (sloppy chain), not a straight piece of sheet metal :), rusted floors, no headliner, wag sag... but I can't quite bring myself to part it out... maybe later... maybe it'll donate it's running gear to Rambo... hard to say... But if you dunked that motor you might want to check the compression on all the cylinders to make sure you didn't do some serious damage. Then, if that's ok, and you've changed the oil and filters, then you'll want to see if you have spark. Next is fuel... is fuel getting to the carb or injectors... If the motor is turning over ok you're probably ok... but check that compression first, a tester is only about $20. then spark, then fuel... john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 20:48:49 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: golden eagle...
