Seems to me the ideal substance would mildly etch or dissolve the oxidation on the contacts. I've never found anything that will do it. I've always wanted to try vinegar to see if it would work and how long it might take. I never got around to it. If anybody else tries it, I suggest white vinegar since it seems to have fewer impurities. Last week I was talking to a street-rod guy that was talking about some kind of a metal etching solution he was going to use on a rusty model A. If I can, I'll see if I can't get a little of that to tinker with. Swell! I'll grab one and call it done then. In case anyone is interested, there are lower gearsets available for the 400. Also if anyone wants the ultimate 400, parts to turn it into the burly th475 (straight cut gears, different converter, interior parts etc) are about 900 bucks if you're rebuilding one. I'm seriously considering it, since the 400 looks relatively doable, and I'll be beating the snot out of mine out here. I'll be looking into some tranny coolers etc, and will try to post all the pics somewhere of all the buildups. though I'm ashamed that digital technology has progressed so far while nothing has been done to the Jeeps hehehehe.... anyway thanks everyone! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Feb 2003 23:14:07 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: suggested electrical cleaners? A: I suggest driving up to that CSK store up the hill from you, and looking on their "Chemical" aisle (usually placed near the bottom shelf) for a black can that says "Electrical cleaner" (next to spray silicone in all 12 of the stores I have recently worked in) PB'Laster is an oil that sticks where you spray it and busts rusty things loose. It's not meant for electric contacts! (door hinges, window slides if you can stand the smell, hood hinges that are nearly rusted in place start to work again!) From: john Subject: fsj: suggested electrical cleaners? For years I used WD40, sort of worked I guess. But I found out that it tends to gum things up, guess because it uses vegetable oil. Then I actually used electrical contact cleaner, some CD- something or another that I had used as a TV repairman... but lately I've been using AMSOIL MP (Metal Protector), it seems to work ok, but it does tend to get things "oily", although it's not oil as such... http://www.wagoneers.com/AMSOIL/mp.jpg (and I've tried PB blaster, but man is that stuff nasty... ;) I've gone through these electrical connector issues with my old Full Size Jeeps and the old Mercedes Diesels... seems if a vehicle sits for a while it becomes a problem, even the XJ's seem to have trouble with their power windows... so, anyone have any contact cleaning suggestions? and where to get it? I'm going to go through the http://wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/190D 's electricals tomorrow... :) john ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Feb 2003 23:06:04 -0800 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: Fwd: straighten me out on this.. A: (I'm cc'ing all the lists as this is needed info for many) Pioneer part number (currently unavailable through Parts America.com) FRA-124 and Motormite #04369 $44.99 plus shipping (available.) Probably available through http://www.bjsoffroad.com/ (FSJ only supplier who does this part time) and definitely available from http://www.seatactransmission.com One thing to keep in mind is what year is the 401? (same goes for 360, 304 etc) because in 1971 the cranks were changed to go from Borg Warner automatic (AFAIK, they all used a Chev style starter on the left, but I may be mis-recalling that tidbit) to TF727 and TH400. You will need to machine the earlier crank to take an adapter to bolt either the 727 or TH400 to. (same goes for the AMC 327, 343 and others built before '70) The balance weight is heavier on a 401 flexplate than 360 (304 and 360 are almost the same weight and have been known to swap in most cases without issues of vibrating the motor apart) I was talking to a machine shop buddy in Canada yesterday and he said he can rebalance my '75 360 flywheel (which I am selling with the recent T18 clutch for $100) to work on a 401 if I bring him the 401 auto flexplate to get the spec from. (I think he said $100 for the rebalance, but that's Canadian!) From: "Tacoma White" Subject: fsj: straighten me out on this.. I"m picking up a 401 on my next trip East (thanks Zach!), and before I get all excited I need to clear up the flexplate issue. I lost the last digest (oops wrong button), so missed the resolution. I will be putting the 401 onto the th400 that's in there. The PO, son of the original owner, put the 360 in, in place of the original 401. The current flexplate is new, as the tranny was rebuilt and in the process we found a big crack in the swiss cheese flexplate. Anyway, what I need to know is this, and pardon having to repeat this info: Do I need the flexplate w/the 401, or since both motors that have been in my Jeep were from 400-equipped sources, can I reuse it? I was under the impression that the other issue revolved around swapping into a 727'ed GW.... anyway lemme know hehe It will be nice to have the right engine back in the monster. Thanks!! I haven't tried it myself yet, but a friend likes Case brand (yes, the ones that make tractors) electrical cleaner. Comes in spray cans similar to WD-40 ones (except mostly white, with dark grey horizontal bands at the top and bottom with the Case logo). Can take a pic at home if you want to see what to look for. ;) I can also ask him where to get it if you can't find it; I'd guess a tractor supply place, though. ;) And isn't CSK along those lines?
