Don't put an SP2P on a 360! You will get ZERO power and ZERO RPMs! The intake was made for 304s for low end and has tiny air runners in it. Many AMC list guys are mad at themselves for putting the intake on their 343+ engines. The only other intake that could be worse is the Torker (for truck applications) From: James Isennock Subject: fsj: Camshaft Install I'm purchasing an Edelbrock Performer cam for the 360 in my 87 G-wag. This will be paired with an SP2P intake and a 600 vac secondary Holley 4V. I've already upgraded the ignition with the Ford TFI cap & coil and an MSD. I need all the off-idle I can get (4" lift and 33's with 3:31's) What I'm wondering is, has anyone experimented with advancing a cam in these AMC motors? I've had good success with advancing cams in Mopars for a little more bottom end grunt but this is my first AMC V8. Thanks, Jay Isennock ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 2003 22:41:44 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: fsj: Re: Re: Can I tow Standard Eagle? A: I don't believe what just happened! I had someone show up at my work tonight just before close and they bought the J20 as is for $850 (so I break even and get my 3/4 ton brakes and have a Dana 60 to sell too!) They're picking it up monday after I finish the tank swap and bolt the rear driveshaft in, and adjust the rear brakes. From: john Subject: Re: Re: Can I tow Standard Eagle? If you take a bottom end cam and advance it, you will get great 500 to 1500 RPM revs, but nothing past and it will ping like a banshee! Check out the cam info on the strokers website http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/strokers for what lift, duration, timing and overlap do to your performance. I've learned enough that I am deciding whether to go with the current low mileage 4.0L HO cam I have, or a custom grind especially made for LPG. I agree on the Performer. If I was going TBI, I would get the new Air Gap AMC intake and Edelbrock aluminum heads (or if I was made of money, I would get the -at-500 cubic inch aluminum engine for -at-$6,000 and put EFI on it in a '76 Cherokee brand new body from Willys Overland on a rustfree frame with Dana 60 high pinion front and Dana 70 rear, 4.10 gears, 40" on/off highway tires on alloy wheels, overdrive auto, NV241 OR transfercase, high angle Tom Woods shafts, 7" SOA front with 5" of added spring lift and 12" of rear spring/mount to match. Everything custom designed in the interior. Then I'd probably get -at-$150,000 for it, and pay off my house! If someone is having ping problems that don't seem to want to go away, I would replace the timing chain with the 3 keyway and retard the cam (that moves power and torque further up the RPM scale though) From: john Subject: Re: fsj: Camshaft Install At 12:17 PM 4/16/2003 -0400, James Isennock wrote: >I'm purchasing an Edelbrock Performer cam for the 360 in my 87 G-wag. >This will be paired with an SP2P intake and a 600 vac secondary Holley 4V. whoa! you sure you want the SP2P??? that's for high rpm isn't it? Your 360 in an '87 barely sees much past 500 rpm off idle. ;) you want the PERFORMER MANIFOLD, designed for peak torque off idle... and holley's suck. I hate 'em... the 1406 is much smoother... you don't need 600cfm, the calcs for that engine come out around 190cfm... it's on my server somewhere (tech/engines?) > I've already upgraded the ignition with the Ford TFI cap & coil and an MSD. > I need all the off-idle I can get (4" lift and 33's with 3:31's) yeah, so ditch that 5,500 rpm + manifold for the Performer, and get the Performer 1406 carb or look at a TBI setup. Ditch the stupid Holley unless you're planning on putting 5.36's in your axles and headin' to the drag strip. ;) >What I'm wondering is, has anyone experimented with advancing a cam in these >AMC motors? not sure you want to do that, the pinging will only get worse... let's see what jim blair or curtis have to say on that one though... >I've had good success with advancing cams in Mopars for a little more bottom >end grunt but this is my first AMC V8. I've done it with ford's, but then economy suffered significantly... that's why they put vacuum advance units on the distributer... ;) If you got the bucks, go TBI. john ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 2003 23:13:56 -0700 From: "Jim B" Subject: Re: fsj: Re: Hollanders' manual? A: The differential was a Dana 44 with IFS (same as Vette) used in the V12 and maybe the XJ6 models. Hollanders manuals work to a point. What's needed is a new manual we can write called "Jeepers". I'm lucky I can spot different things in vehicles and go "Hey! That looks like it's off such and such!" (and I'm right many times!) John still scoffs at my thoughts on the interchangeability between AMC Eagles and XJs and FSJs, but since now I do the physical trying before I say "Eureka! It fits!" (after the NP219 transfercase no fit to AW4 scenario. It fit fine the other way though! 727 will accept an XJ NV case with 23 spline. Driveshafts and stuff are another thing though!) Jag's used a universal TH400's with an adapter, same thing that Jeep did... would be handy to have a book like this for swaps... lots of folks in the parts business cross reference stuff to see if it fits. john ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Apr 2003 08:11:59 -0700 From: "Dalan Hawker" Subject: fsj: Power steering pump? Get Chevy Blazer lines for 3" extra (check the size of the bolt hole for the caliper end. There are 2 sizes) Driveshaft will work to 3" of lift. SOA on a 74 to pre '80 WT or truck is easy with bolt on parts (I already did it once. Pics and the how to will be in an upcoming issue of FSJ Magazine) Brakelines for a SOA are just lifted Chev lines (mine are Stainless steel braided) From: "Nels" Subject: Re: Lift idea with revolver shackles Rob, Thanks for the tips. This idea was for the front springs, with the revolvers at the front of the front springs, and the stock shackles moved to the rear of the front springs. I'm thinking the only other changes I might need would be longer brake lines and probably a longer front driveshaft. Does that sound more realistic? Jim, SOA sounds cool, but there are too many mods needed for my taste. Basically, any fabricating is out of the question. I'm at the "bolt-on only" level in mechanics. Other ideas are appreciated!
