You should be able to get a new starter or a rebuilt from any parts house for that thing for less then $100. I can't see any reason why an Ambassador starter wouldn't work. Compare the two and see. I'm cc'ing the list, one of the Canadian refugees I know works at a parts store down here and goes across the border from time to time... he'll be in touch... ;) There is also the possibility that your timing is a bit too far advanced on your engine... but more likely it's the starter... The online price is $29.99, but there is a core charge of $20 (all prices are USD plus tax) The number matches a GM starter which is very common (Oldsmobile I think), but I would eyeball both side by side very carefully. Did you try Wakefield Sperling? (I think they're Partsplus now) I have taken Chev starters and swapped the nose from the AMC 327 and early 6 cyl starter on them with good results. (they used Chev style built in solenoid starters till -at-'70 IIRC. It mounts on the driver's side instead of passenger's side) The refugee Darcy, $500 for a new starter sounds a bit high... by an order of magnitude...
