(someone on another list suggested just buying new main leaves, and using the old ones for #2 position, so all you do is replace the centering pin) From: Brazzadog-at-aol.com Subject: fsj: Re: Rear spring help Replying to a multitude of posts... So what you're saying is that even if I'm using a leaf from a set of old and possibly saggy springs, by using a leaf from the front pack, which would have had a greater spring rate anyway, I can still boost the rear a little bit? I'm only looking for an inch or two. I've used an abrasive blade in a circular saw with great success. Years ago I had a pickup bed that I was replacing due to rust. When I was done with it I cut it lengthwise into 3 pieces and took it to the dump in the new bed. Haven't done it myself (but then I'm not running a V8. I'm just parting a '73 360 4 bbl to put my 4.0L in it's place with the TH400 trans) I have a NOS flexplate from Jeep with the numbers 6.5 23 - 5351819 on the packaging. I'm looking at putting an AMC 6 cyl into my '73 J4000 (in place of the 360 that stopped turning due to PO losing all the oil from the plastic oil gauge line) and it has the unipattern TH400 (the one with the 2" AMC adapter ring) and quadratrac. I would like to know if anyone has done this conversion, or knows if this flexplate will work with the Uni-pattern TH400 and spacer from the 360. If not, then I'll be selling trans and the rebuilt Borg Warner Quadratrac (along with the front Dana 44 closed knuckle and rear Dana 60-2 5 lug axles I've posted with 3.73 gears) I will then rebuild another AMC TH400 (my second attempt. Last time was 20+ years ago, and I've redone a couple dozen 727/904s between then and now) and put the Chev TH400 output shaft and a NP208C (passenger's side drop) into my truck. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jun 2003 20:55:36 EDT From: JPhil78888-at-aol.com Subject: Fwd: fsj: closed knuckle question Unfortunately, working on my '73 J4000 isn't at the top of my priority list. According to my wife, working on the house is. Anyway, I got tired of trying to work around the closed knuckle Dana 44 of my front axle and I am part way through a front axle conversion. (chevy blazer axle + Bronco knuckles out) You may need to consider a similar axle conversion to get the open knuckles which are much easier to convert to different lug configurations. Oh, I also still have the old closed knuckle axle (minus the gears) if you are interested. I already have an 8 lug Dana 60 rear with the same ratio as the front, and would like to keep the same gearing if possible. "old" one for sale, fleet update... Just bought a '91 Laredo, nice... white... OME lift, very clean, power windows/locks... Selling my '87 Cherokee Pioneer. Gold w/ tan interior. Brushguard, NEW 30x9.5 BFG AT KOs, 3" lift, adjustable track bar, CB setup, new rear main seal, fresh tune, 16 to 17mpg, runs great, 2" receiver hitch, same size 30x9.5" spare even! New muffler. Good brakes. Everything works, even the rear wiper! Pix at: http://wagoneers.com/ebay/87-XJ (some of the '91, the '87 and my son's '89) Researching the price on the '87 Cherokee with 243,000 miles I found the following: Kelly Blue book - $3,980 Edmunds - $2,883 (estimated, they don't go back to '87) NADA - $3,050 That price doesn't reflect the 3" lift, new BFGs, the brushguard, foglights or CB. (EXCELLENT mechanical condition, new rear main, new exhaust, new starter, new shocks/track bar - 3rd owner) A/C is still R12, added a pound and it's working great, just had a 90+ degree day to test it out. :) Based on the numbers above and the extras I've added, I guess a price around $3,000 should be fair. The '87 is clean, runs great, good fuel economy... handles well... I like it... but I got the cleaner, lower mileage unit with power goodies for my wife, it's her Jeep... After SuperDawg is done we'll see if we keep both Jeeps or if she'll be happy with my J10... chances are we'll end up keeping the XJ and the J10 along with the little 190D. :) one FSJ, one XJ and one Diesel-Benz. :) Which reminds me... need to get the '80 300CD put together today as well... need to head back outside and get wrenching. :) status right now is TWO XJ's and TWO Diesel-Benz's... outta control... ;) (not counting my son's XJ and FSJ) I'm not going to have time to read digests, so please email me directly at john-at-wagoneers.com thanx, john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold...
