we took the AMC 20 axle out of my '83 J10 (used the '75 Dana 44 in it)
and then took the guts out of it... and used front spindles with disc
rotors for the trailer, it's lighter and we can convert it to brakes...
curtis down in centrailia is coming up with all kinds of cool ideas. :)

Does anybody know if a TH400 with overdrive will attach nicely to an
NP229? (It IS the 229 that's in my '88 GWag, right?) Do I need some
sort of adapter, or will it bolt up, or am I SOL?

doesn't want his front air dam, we're moving that over...
he didn't want his inside spare mount, we moved that over...

turns out I traded his 35x12.5's for the rack... need
to sell the Cooper Discover's on six lug alloys... almost
like new...

Going to sell the shovel/axe mounts, the Yakima shield for
the front and a couple of the light tabs...

Let me know on the shocks... if those N36's are the HD
model I need to know the number of the softer/std ones...
trying to get this '91 to ride nicely so I can keep it. :)

huh? :) yeah, we had to sell the '99 WJ, so my
wife decided she didn't like the '87 xj or the '85 190D,
so I went XJ shopping because she won't drive anything
but a Jeep. :)

So... I found a nice clean '91 XJ, but she was sick
the day of the test drive and told me to make the
decision... so I did... and of course it was wrong. :)

Anyway, did find out that the shocks we have are
the HD version, swapped out the rear, need to do the
fronts... tires are harsher too, but can't run the
Michelin 31's because the dingaling that installed the
OME lift put the spring retainers in with the nut
toward the tire and it cuts...

for full status of the fleet, see:
http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html :)

btw 35x12.5's anyone? my son traded me his tires
for the roof rack...

Yeah, but at least you don't have to deal with that damn lock that the
dealer can't fix anymore :)

In theory, you should be able to turn those around. And if the tires are that
bad, it might be well worth it to do that. Been a long time since I've been
under an XJ, but if it's the back, you should be done turning those bolts
around already. The fronts might be a little interesting, but the only bolt
I can think of up front that would rub is the one on the bar that on a ford
would be called the radius arm. Again, not a big deal to reinstall.

I helped lift an 87 XJ a couple of years ago. Nothing really all that difficult
to deal with, unlike the 93 bronco I helped lift.

roger that... that was a big uncertainty. :) also will be able
to get a lighter colored interior and try the 4.0L for the next one too. :)

rear, isn't a problem with 30x9.5's... 31's are a bit much... my other
tire was cut on an earlier xj too...

yeah, the XJ's are pretty straight forward to work on... one of the
reasons I consider them one of the best Jeeps ever built.

I doubt it'd bolt up... tried to connect an NP219 to
an AW4 (Jeep 4speed at) and it didn't work... the 700r4
is the OD unit... wouldn't be a bad way of going... despite
the adapter.

Subject: fsj: re: Rocker arms questions

A: The rockers can be "adjusted" by shaving down the base of the towers till
the clatter goes away (did this with a flat file or grinder many times!) but
the electrical problem can be very simply fixed most of the time. Add a
ground wire from the battery negative to the body/frame of the car. The
original braided one at the back of the motor may be broken off or gone too
high resistance to allow power feedback to the regulator, so it has to take
the long way around (through the engine bearings to the trans to the
driveshaft and through the rear springs before coming forwards) I have seen
engine bearing damage (through electrolysis) caused by this a surprising
number of times.
The other common cause is corrosion between the alternator main terminal
and the battery + post. It can happen quite a few different ways. Battery
acid caused corrosion in the + cable and connectors at the solenoid. Loose
or damaged wire from the alternator main terminal, or the common problem in
almost all cars I have owned with an ammeter is corrosion on the terminals
in the back. A jumper wire from the alt to the battery + will test if too
much resistance is the trouble very quickly and efficiently.

Subject: Rocker arms questions
Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2003 11:07:37 -0500

Duane actually has two questions one is pertaining to his
electrical system
I tried to help him out with, still seems to be a few gremlins
in the
system. But he is also asking about rockers so if anyone here
wishes to
comment or advise either subject please feel free to do so and
might want to
copy your reply to Duane down below and thanks in advance to all
who may
reply.

=======================

Hi Eddie,
I had conversed with you one other time about an electrical prob
in my `70
Hornet, pulsating alternator output. Have changed volt reg and
alt and still
the same, headlights will sort of pulse a little brighter and
dimmer kind of
steadily. had this prob on other AMC cars also, still cannot
figure it out,
they dont all do it either.

Well i am actually asking about rocker arms now(but any info on
above prob
would help, lol.), I am trying to find out if the only rocker
arms and
pivots that work on an `82 258 6-cyl head are all there is(did
not word that
quite right but i think u know what i mean), are the V8 ones for
say a 304
different? In looking at pictures of Ford Boss 302 they look
like same pivot
design, are they? or workable close?
would love to put some roller rockers of some sort on it lol, it
would
really help efficiency, better gas mileage. rocker ratio is
1.6:1 and want
to keep at least that.
Well, take care.

Thanks,
Duane
