watching on the news, at least the west coast power grid
is managed by a bunch of NT (w2k?) workstations...

Thanks Jim

A comprehensive answer but I'll stick with what I have at the moment, thanks.
The manifolds seem to be in good nick and I've got on to some proper gaskets
so I should be back in business by next week.

Fibre and metal sandwich... makes sense to me. Wonder what kind of mechanic
thought a thin piece of cork would work?

For possible future reference, where is Sea Tac International anyway?

I doubt we'll hear this on the news as it would undermine the
confidence in our utility system... but what OS was being used
to manage this power grid?

I recall some sort of NT systems being used locally... The
way this thing cascaded was unprecedented... this sounds
like a s/w failure of some kind...

Be real curious to see if this wasn't related to the worm situation
on Windows the last few days...

I'm in the middle of doing a 4.0L into my '83 J10 Stepside. Using
an AW4, NP219 (custom adapter, should have used an NP242 and done
a SYE and 4:1 kit... oh well... ;)

Never worked up the nerve to carve up Old Blue. :) Moved into
the J-trucks because I got tired of the tailgates on the Wags.

I am considering a Willys PU Mercedes 3.0L conversion though...

On your B series cummins I'd consider going with the automatic
normally behind them (Allison?) and if you can't get a transfer case
going with a divorced mount type. Your axle drop will be
a problem with the old fords... but you might be able to
adapt a newer xfr case with a shaft. You might be able to
score a trans/xfr case out of a Dodge Cummins TD PU. That
should work, however the length will require new driveshafts,
but at least the diffs you have will work.

I think you'll have to go with a small body lift to get the
3.9 into the GW won't you? It's a little tall and the pan
is deep. A 2" body lift and a set of add-a-leafs up front
should get you up high enough...

I wouldn't use a TF727 behind anything, unless you could
find one out of an old Dodge motor home, the ones used
in the Jeeps aren't the same. A number of weaknesses...

I'd consider using an Aisin Warner 4 speed automatic if
you can get an adapter... I think it'll withstand the torque
ok... have to see the specs.

Keep in touch on this one... sounds like a nice project.
Where are you? Take digital pictures and notes... :)

YOu should get on the FSJ list on digest.net for support too. :)

It appears to be a standard open Jeep differential.
Whether it's for an FC or any Willys vintage Jeep
can be figured out by the part number which
can be seen, and should be able
to be cross referenced.
http://www.wagoneers.com/tmp/jeepdiff2.jpg
I examined the picture carefully and compared it
to my my shop manuals, it's an open carrier.
The Power-Trax unit had a different case and other
identifying features. Lockers look different too,
this is a nice clean open diff and having the box
makes it quite valuable.

I'll cc a few Jeep lists and see what they say... if
anyone is interested they'll email me since they won't
see your email address more then likely. :)

Most of my lines look in pretty rough shape (rusted
mostly). The lines
to the brakes and tranny cooler seem to be the ones I am
most interested
in replacing. Since I am running a propane converted
engine I have no
fuel lines (gas that is) to worry about. I was thinking
stainless for
longevity and corrosion resistance. Is there a better
alternative?

A: What lines are you replacing? Stainless steel takes
only a couple
flexes before getting brittle. That's what we had to use
for Natural Gas
conversions, and we had to be real careful, or it would
be ready to
break after just a dozen or so bends.

I am looking for source for new stainless steel
hardlines for my 87 FSJ.
Inline tube has a set for 77-85 full size Cherokees.
Will they work
with my 87 Grand Wagoneer or have the line locations
changed or is there
		a better source?

Jim,

I am probably one of the slowest people when it comes to working
on my Jeep.

Anyway, I have been slowly working on swapping out the D44
closed knuckle on
my '73 J4600. I have installed a D44 from a chevy blazer but I
haven't
determined how to attache the steering. Do you remember what
you did? Any photos?

After this I will install knuckles out from a Ford Bronco to get
the 5 on
5-1/2 lugs.

Thanks,
Jamie Phillips

not sure, we're dragging them to his place maybe next weekend... I
may wander over and look at the Willys PU's today... trying to avoid
the temptation... This guy and I are a bad influence on each other. :)
We start building stuff out of all the parts we gather. My '67
Wagoneer had Volvo, Mercedes and other assorted parts in it in part
because of the merging of our two collections. Love horsetrading with
the guy, which is why I haven't been over there for a while. :)

Subject: fsj: forget the tires, the rack is for sale again...

my son is going to sell his '89 XJ and buy another J-truck... so
he's planning on using the 35x12.5's I was trying to sell, that
he traded for the Garvin Industries 4" Wilderness Roof Rack...

So, I'm going to trade him back and sell the Roof rack so I can
buy the right size tires for my '91 300D.

The rack is relatively new, the rack by itself sold for $550.
It has the high lift jack and spare mount accessories, along with
the shovel/axe brackets. It also has a pair of light tabs.
With all the accessories I'll sell it for $400. It will disassemble
for shipping. Estimate $40 for shipping.

let me know...
