Single wire units have a steel tank that gets ground through the body of the tank (and that's also way lots of them quit working suddenly too!) From: "Neal Hoover" Subject: fsj: another fuel tank Q ok, so i'm about done retrofitting the plastic gas tank from the '85 J-10 onto the frame of the '76. i have all of the fuel supply/return line differences worked out, but the last question comes down to the electrical sending unit leads. the '75 tank had only 1 lead to the cab. the '85 has 2. the sending unit is nothing more than a variable resistor, right? well, i connected an ohmeter across the 2 leads of the '85 sending unit and got nice variable resistances as i actuated the float arm. in order to perform a resistance test, a small voltage needs to be applied, right? sooooo... how in the hell does the sending unit from the '75 work with only one lead?!?! any help on making the retrofit work? If I fill it up, it shows full, and then works until about 3/4 of a tank, and then drops to empty. I saw something in a manual about a little hatch that you can get the sender out of there through the inside, which sounded pretty cool, but I pulled up the plastic liner almost all the way to the front and didn't see it. Is it under the last 1/4 of that plastic that is screwed down? Or is it not there. The book said later models had it, but not a year specifically. We're dealing with an '80 Wag here. Thoughts on this?
