As soon as i get the rig home, should be by the begining of next week will let you know the condintion of the cluster. I'm not sure if the IH Scout with Nissan diesel uses the IH pattern trans or AMC pattern (which they used with the AMC 6 cyls) I half way thought about a V6 GM diesel conversion with TH400 or 700R4. I see a good runner from a Caddy that had a tree drop across the body for only $500. I think you'll be better off using the Nissan 3.3L turbodiesel. International used them in scouts and bolted them to a TF727, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get it to bolt up to the jeep transmission. The nissan engine will be more suited to the gear ratios you have in the J-10, and will offer you a powerband more suited to offroad, when the fact that you are in a jeep and there is a trail in front of you (or the hill in your driveway...) gets you. The engines themselves are extremely robust. I had half considered using one to make a diesel SJ myself. The cummins ISB (think dodge) would be too much of a pain, and the chevy 6.2/6.5, while an option, makes the beast noseheavy, and a bunch of other weird issues pop up. Then keep the two 300Ds how they are. You always had a softspot for a 123. They stop flex and tear the axles apart if you jump your rig (just ask John! I got the one from his parts rig) They are to keep the back end from swaying while towing (to make GWs into Granny's grocery getter and RV trailer hauler or low rider rally cars) From: "Faith Jeff" Subject: fsj: Q: good idea or bad idea - removing rear trac bar hi folks- i'm considering removing the rear trac-bar in my 90 gw to simplify the process of installing 2.5" lifted springs... is this a good idea or bad idea? i don't think the trac bars were offered in all years, so i figure it's a nice-to-have as opposed to a need-to-have item. thanks, jeff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Mar 2004 22:46:32 -0800 From: "Jim Blair" Subject: Re: fsj: delusions of Diesels... :) Let's crunch some numbers. FSJ with MB 3.0L TD motor, AW4 and 4.10 gears theoretical setup. At highway speed (70-75 mph here) the motor would be doing 3336.7 RPM in drive and 2500 RPM in .75 O/D (right above peak torque) Takeoff power would be 2.8 (first gear) times 3.5 (equivalent ratio compared to 3.07/2.89 and 24.7" tires opposed to 4.10 and 28.8" tires) at 9.8:1 (slower on takeoff than the MB unless the converter stall was bumped up -at-20-25%) Now if I had the torque converter specs for both setups, I could tell you what to go with for stall speed! Using this info: '83 MB 3.0L TD motor: 125 HP at 4350 RPM with torque peak of 170 ft/lbs at 2400 RPM. MB trans had 3.9:1 first gear (don't yet know the converter stall specs for it or the AW4) AW4 has 2.8:1 first gear '83 MB factory final ratio is 3.08 -at-1:1 SJ has 4.10 and -at-400lbs extra weight plus greater wind interference For argument's sake, we'll say all accessories use the same power. Original 258 727 (actually 5 speed in John's case) and 3.31 That was 2700 RPM (actaully closer to 3,000 due to converter slippage and stall speed) -at-70 mph SJ takeoff ratio was 2.45 (first gear for 727. 999 is 2.74 which is why I like it better for highway gears) times 3.31 axle which is 8.11:1 . The MB's takeoff ratio is 3.9 (first gear) to 3.08 axle which is 12:1 (rounded) That's a roughly 75% takeoff power difference. Once the tire/axle is taken into account for (28.9" tires and 4.10 gears = 3.54 effective) that's .87 of the original. The difference would be made up with a slightly higher stall converter (since it's lockup it'll be okay. It'll feel like a 5th gear! ) The MB was 2923 RPM -at-70 mph in 1:1 (just above peak torque) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2004 04:11:41 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: fsj: Q: good idea or bad idea - removing rear trac bar On Thu, 25 Mar 2004, Faith Jeff wrote: >-->hi folks- >--> >-->i'm considering removing the rear trac-bar in my 90 gw to simplify the >-->process of installing 2.5" lifted springs... >--> >-->is this a good idea or bad idea? shouldn't be a problem... will stop the clunking in the rear if you have any. ;) not 100% sure why they did that with leaf springs, it's a coil thing usually, although this has been discussed on the list and there are benefits, but remember most of our FSJ's don't have one. :) john >-->i don't think the trac bars were offered in all years, so i figure it's a >-->nice-to-have as opposed to a need-to-have item. it was only the last few years they did it... after the XJ's came out... if a trac bar goes bad in an xj you get the wobbble-o-death. :) btw, in san antonio texas until monday am, then heading up to st. louis... john >--> >-->thanks, >-->jeff ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2004 18:29:13 -0500 From: "Neal Hoover" Subject: fsj: quick ring Q!!! can anyone tell me which piston ring goes into the top groove? besides the oil rings, one type of compression ring that i got from Hastings is rectangular in cross section, and the other has a slight bevel on the ID of the ring. which one goes in the top groove??? thanks!
