The chain passes through the bracket on the motor mounts, so it's tight against the motor and out of the way in 90% of vehicles (if you can pull with the starter in place, the chain will cause no problems as long as you can get it high enough) BTW, when I do the motor on Black Jack, I have to put rims only on the front or use a chain lift to get it out! LOL! (my hood is eye level with the 36" tires on) The way I'm doing the '80 is because I'm chopping the jeep apart around the drivetrain as I take them out. (frame is TOTALLY rotted out. I put my fingers through the lip that holds the gas tank in! Funny part is, the front clip is almost perfect and nearly rustfree!) I discovered when I pulled them that the rear sidewindows were replaced at some point. One is cut glass and the other is plexiglass with mirror coating! I'm trying to find some tires for my Jeep (not an FSJ, but still has 15" rims) and they need to be tall, yet skinny and streetable. I currently have Kelly 33/9.50/15s and much as I like them, they aren't made that size anymore. I can get them in 33/10.50, but prefer not to go wider if I can help it. I was looking at maybe a set of 10.00R/15 highway trailer recaps (with the WWW pattern) and those are 35" tall, but extremely stiff (I wouldn't have to worry about sidewalls for sure with 10ply rating! ) BFG still makes 33/9.50/15, but are priced higher than buying 33/12.50s (they'd sell kore if the price was the same or lower, but I'm not thrilled with the lack of traction to their compound when I hit the brakes on my hill when it's wet out. Nothing quite like doing an end around, when you hadn't planned on it! (wider tires are even worse because I couldn't even get takeoff traction with the new 31/10.50s I tried) I need street tires (I do a LOT of highway driving around here) that can get traction offroad. Radial Rovers don't come that size and other brands don't seem to have it either. $600 for a set of new Kellys, but they are quite different from the Safaris I have now. Anyone have ideas? Funny part is that I am running these tires on my lifted '88 Comanche with 200,000+ miles on it (motor only has 120,000 though) with a Peugeot 2wd 5 speed (AW4/NP242 will be going in soon with the rest of the lift to 6") and I have 3.08 gears, soon to be 3.73. At least I'll be able to put it in 4 hi once the other trans is in, but a little better road traction would be nice and probably translate to offroad traction as well! Jim, siped BFG AT/KOs are a night and day difference over non-siped ATs. You really have to drive them to believe it. I have siped BFGs on the powerchoke, and I have to do something stupid (like floor it on ice while not level) for scary handling to happen. I used to loathe BFG ATs, but now they are quite decent. They do give a smaller truck a "numb from the waist down" feeling where other tires (goodyear, michelin) still maintain decent handling (for something with leaf springs, a bunch of weight over the nose, and a straight axle), but this is not an issue in the 8000 lb powerchoke. I think this is due to the extra thick sidewalls on BFGs. I really wouldn't advise running trailer tires on a steer or drive application. They make drive and steer tires for a reason. Friends of mine that play with XJs seem to like Bridgestone Dueler A/Ts for daily driver XJs. The first generation was awesome offroad, second gave up a teense for the street. I don't know how the third generation is. Another option in less expensive offroad tires is a Remington Wide Brute, but I don't know if they have the size you want.
