The NP228 is preferred if you have a choice. If it's dead, chances are it's the vicous coupler in the NP229 that's failed. The transmission is a TF-727. He's supposedly in a town about 20mi from me. Don't have any specs. Here are some comments a guy he knows made... the hole you are seeing in the firewall IS NOT an air intake. It's a cutout for the starter to the turbine. There is a cutout in the bottom of the car near the rear of the hatch with an aluminium scoop to help pull air in. The vaccuum of the engine is quite large and it should do fine. Also, due to the massive amount of air being pulled through the compartment, heat really isn't an issue. The only thing that gets hot is the nozzle coming out of the engine, and that is heat shielded for it's exit out of the bumper. The original engine is indeed in the car along with the transmission, so it's fully functional without use of the jet. The project is not intended for drag racing, but more for top speed runs. He plans on running up to freeway speeds or so and then turning on the turbine for extra fun Wink And yes, they are pretty fast. The MR2 in the earlier pics ran a GPS verified 186mph on the salt flats - when they were in VERY shitty condition. That car is good for over 200mph (and yes, the wing is functional, and very needed at speed). The 280z wasn't as fast, but it was shaft driven. It ran about 165mph, but damn, it pulled insane from about 70-130. The last thing I know of that he was working on was tearing the engine out of the Datsun. I believe he plans to sell it as a rolling chassis with all of the electronics and plumbing in it... so if anyone wants a car they can drop a shaft drive helicopter engine in and go, here's your chance. heh. The trial run should be on Wed. or Thurs. weather permiting. This is by far the cleanest build he's done. The interior is great with all the added switch gear and gauges blending in... don't really know how to describe it other than if the Eclipse came from the factory with a turbine option, this is what it would look like. If all goes to plan it will be entered into a local car show along with the Dakota pickup.
