Good news. Re-pointed the dish this morning; seems to be happy now. So it _should_ record "Trucks!" this morning (and after) with no trouble. (I still think it's only two episodes, but it's set to record all four showings.) If it's convenient, someone may still want to record it on their end for backup. (Besides, having a good backup plan is the best insurance that it won't be needed.) The details you probably don't care about: The satellite it gets Spike on (I think 119) was only getting about 45 signal strength on a 125 scale. It was borderline, almost enough to lock, but must've crossed the line in the last week or so. It's on a tripod on the roof, so it may have just gradually settled or whatever and gotten off mark over the last year or two. Plus it's right on the edge of some trees, the reason for the tripod (to get over the trees), so I shouldn't be too surprised. Anyway, now it's back to 60-65 -- still much lower than I would like, but I think the best I can get (without taking out the trees, which I would except for the difficulty), and it gets a solid lock now. (The other satellite, 110, gets a bit over 100 on the scale, both before and after re-pointing this morning.) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's a higher power, trying to tell me through bunnies, that we're all gonna die. -- Anya - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Jun 2005 12:47:24 -0700 From: john meister Subject: Re: fsj: 78 Cherokee project, for sale CHEAP, MUST GO or it's scrap would probably be cheaper and less stressful for me to just buy my own tires here... :( too bad you live out in the middle of nowhere... ;) john Tacoma White wrote: >> yup. Good news. Haven't watched the whole thing yet, but it looks like the first FSJ episode of "Trucks!" did record ok. Looks promising; I'm betting we'll actually want this one on DVD. (And, hey, I could even put that 30min Jeep ("Jeep Auto Showcase" from Speedvision) on the same DVD. It'll all fit easily.) Here's a teaser; the intro to the show. 2min:25sec. http://dan.black.org/Trucks_intro.mp4 or http://dan.black.org/Trucks_intro.mpg 6.7MB and 11.1MB, respectively. What formats can people use? If nobody _can't_ handle the first version, the mp4, then that's what I'll use to do the whole thing for previewing. Seems to be the best mix of filesize and quality. (Or I could do a lower-quality mp4 since this is really just a preview.) But if people have problems running QuickTime, I'll just do it in the straight mpg (mpeg1). I'll get the whole thing grabbed and converted when I can. Currently, my 550+GB dv project volume only has 12.5GB left. (A half-hour show without commercials will take about 5GB raw.) But not to worry; I have several things that I'm finishing up and should be able to get at least a few dozen GB back today and tomorrow. Definitely won't be a problem to clear it out to grab the "Trucks!" episodes, and the second one isn't until next week anyway. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thunder is a rich source of loudness. - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Jun 2005 19:24:49 -0700 From: john meister Subject: Re: fsj: Trucks! the teaser is fantastic... WJ: finally got the brakes bled... what a difference. used the split rear fold down back seat to bring home a covered swing for the garden... XJ's: ordered a driver's side seatbelt for the '86, almost ready to drive, think we might take it to the airport to pickup my daughter when she returns from china - hoping to swap injectors around on the '92 tomorrow. SJ's: moving parts around getting ready to expand carport, making room for superdawg, ended up getting stung by a wasp... DieselBenz - put the '79 300sd back up on craigslist at $1,200, would like it to go away to make room for the Jimmy... being out of town for a week and having my servers down complicates things a bit. ;) waiting to see if the J10 and Jimmy 6.2L setups with veggie oil will replace the '91 300d or not... the benz is such a nice car... but I'm not sure I can justify having the benz, the jimmy and the j10... and the wj... ;) Still need to order the 12v fuel transfer pump setup for the veggie oil. Thinking about the 12v Portable 10 GPM transfer pump from Northern Industrial, item 360-2519, it comes with hoses, etc., only $154.99. thoughts? The veggie oil is accumulating... have almost 100gals set aside now... need to filter it and start using it... the '83 Jimmy is getting a "new" tranny... Superdawg is getting worked on as well... I may try to filter 5 gallons of veggie oil and run it through the Benz again... last time one of the injector lines failed and then the return lines needed attention. :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Jun 2005 03:11:13 CDT From: Dan Black Subject: fsj: Trucks! I haven't watched it straight through or grabbed it with the computer yet, but I skimmed through the rest of this week's "Trucks!" episode, and it looks really good. As tends to happen in those shows, some of the stuff may be oversimplified and a few details left out, but overall, it shows you a lot of the main stuff to do (for this episode, to do the suspension lift and to go back to the rhino chaser grille). I definitely think a lot of us will want this on DVD. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All people are born alike - except Republicans and Democrats. -- Groucho Marx - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Jun 2005 19:29:20 -0700 (PDT) From: elliott sydnam Subject: fsj: '69 Super Wagoneer....
