Steven, Glad to hear you're ok. When you say the MJ was destroyed, how? physically bent? if it was just submerged it can be salvaged... chances are the water did not get completely into the engine/trans, etc... of course if it was picked up and smashed... well... you've got lots of friends on the internet for advice and ideas... john On Fri, 2 Sep 2005, Jim Blair wrote: >--> From: "Vee Dubb" >-->Subject: Merce-Jeep no more... >--> >-->Hurricane Katrina has taken all but my wife, our two cats, and few >-->photos that we could get up into the attic with us as we escaped the >-->flood waters. I plan to get back to it Saturday. it's not an easy job (you need to keep track of a lot of misc. parts) and you need a steering wheel puller and a release tool for the plate under the wheel... here's what the two pullers look like: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Tilt-Column-Repair/SJ-column-2.jpg >-->I am wondering if I should replace the ignition switch as well. I think it >-->runs under $20.00. if the key is worn, otherwise not necessary, most american car ignition swithces hold up ok... if this was a mercedes I'd say absolutely. :) I've not had a failure of an american ignition switch that caused me not to be able to get the car going... most times they fail so you don't need a key, a feature I like, but I live in a low crime area and drive vehicles that aren't desireable theft items. ;) Of course YMMV and for piece of mind, replace it. Now is the time. :) >-->Another question for you. I have most of the steering column apart but >-->now there are those 2 pins on the sides with screws holes in them. I made my own tool ... here is a detail of that custom removal tool I made (curtis bought me the tool at napa to do this the right way for Christmas last year. turns out it wasn't very much money and SURE SAVED a lot of time too... ;) here's my custom tool pulling the pin, don't have a picture of the new tool: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Tilt-Column-Repair/P1010004.JPG http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Tilt-Column-Repair/steering-column-pix.jpg http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Tilt-Column-Repair/ one of the guys on the list wrote up the process and I think I edited it/or at least verified it... didn't add pictures (maybe someday) http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Tilt-Column-Repair/chris-steering-column.html see also: http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/XJ-tilt-column/ this is the problem I had, the spring was sprung... a new spring in the rack kit solved all my problems: http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/XJ-tilt-column/tiltcolumn-spring.jpg unfortunately I didn't take as many photos as usual... I just checked my archive on my home system... looking for more on the column I ran across this: http://wagoneers.com/XJ/tech/Tach_Install/ did a custom tach install on a friend's '96 xj... right now I have a replacement 4.0L (the one I was going to use in Superdawg) in the back of the Jimmy... just went down to Centralia yesterday to get it... >-->Can you explain how that rod (that actuates the ignition switch) attaches >-->to the part I am replacing? Or will it be obvious? this is the best picture I can find: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tech/Tilt-Column-Repair/P1010013.JPG it's NOT obvious. Remember to look in the XJ tech section as there is some cross over on repair items... not many, but a few... :) >--> >-->Thanks again for looking for that part. :) >-->Brian >-->john on Saturday, September 03, 2005 at >-->12:54 AM -0600 wrote: >-->> >-->>I found the part... did you find it yet in the store? >-->>suspect it may cost less to buy it than to mail it. :) at $13 I wasn't far off... :) john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Sep 2005 22:42:36 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: fsj: one less project... decided to get rid of at least one project: http://seattle.craigslist.org/car/95322372.html I sold my good 4.0L, don't have a spare MB 3.0L Diesel laying around, and don't have time to rebuild and swap a 4.0L into this '92 XJ.
